Awoj:

Detroit has traded Ben Gordon and a protected future first-round pick to Charlotte for Corey Maggette, league sources tell Y! Sports.

Yeah, I would take Gordon and the pick easily in that deal.

Doesn't BG have a horrific contract?

I know BG has a bit left, but I don't have the numbers in front of me. Cho taking on another pick, that's probably a big piece of his motivation for making this deal, IMO.

only 2 more yrs but yeah its a lot of dough, but Cho's got time and the minimum salary is now 85% of the cap, so while you rebuild you have to pay someone

isnt it 90% this year 95% next?

Cho acquiring first-rounders. When he was GM in PDX, didn't he say 1st-rounders were like currency, and it's never a bad thing to have a bunch of these stashed?

and becomes more and more valuable as the new CBA kicks in and the value of 4 yrs of low pay increase

They make about the same per year, but Maggette has 1 year left and Gordon has 2.

so he bot a pick for 13 mil basically (Gordon's last yr), wonder what the protections are

So if you're counting at home, CHA has given up their 2013 pick (top 13 protected), while picking up DET's and POR's top-12 protected ones.

CHA could very well have their own (the first pick?) and two mid-teens picks next year.

As far as the draft goes, Robinson (or Drummond, if you believe in him) is still perfect for them. Beal name being tossed around is just fodder to get WAS to trade up with them.

If CHA (or anyone they trade with) takes Beal, WAS is "screwed" into taking MKG, Robinson, Drummond or Barnes. When they have Ariza, the Dunking White Ninja, Nene, Blatche and Okafor already in the fold.

CHA now has Kemba and Gordon. If they got Beal the kid would get 0 shots, though now Biyambo might average 20 rebounds a game from those gunners. I mean, it's MJ we're talking about, so anything's possible, but I still see Robinson drafted at 2, Beal 3, and Barnes or MKG at 4.

from David Aldridge

Protection on '13 first-rounder from Detroit to Charlotte: thru Lottery in '13, top 8 in '14, first pick in '15, then unprotected in '16.

Also it's not like Gordon is a completely dead contract. He'll be overpaid, but I'll bet that expiring contract becomes awfully lucrative as an acquisition for some of the big spending teams staring down the barrel of some real punitive taxes in 2 years too.

the prob is that this yr's draft is way deeper then next's from everything I read, so 3 picks next yr (except top 3) could be pretty "meh"

Detroit comes out better off for the near future. They get out of 2 more years of Gordon for Maggette's expiring deal, and after they amnesty Charlie Villaneuva, they'll be what, $20 million or so under the cap for summer 2013?

What's the free agent crop like that summer? (not rhetorical)

UFA of note:

Chris Paul
Dwight Howard
Devin Harris
Jose Calderon
Monta Ellis (ETO)
Andre Iguadola (ETO)
Kevin Martin
Manu Ginobli
Josh Smith
David West
Paul Millsap
Al Jefferson
Andew Bynum

Tons of RFAs, but the UFA list alone at this point isn't bad at all.

So we're OKC until they drafted him though

OKC didn't have an LMA, but yeah.

Charlotte won 7 games. They'll need incredible luck in the draft to get the pieces to become a contender.
