Can someone definitively tell me what the hell the status is of Chris Kaman's contract.
Can we still waive him and save money?
What is the date for that?
Why in the fuck would we keep a 33 year old player on this team unless it wad to trade him for something?

If he takes Victor Claver's old seat, what's the risk?

His contract became guaranteed July 1st. There are unconfirmed rumors that he extended that deadline but see no reason why he would.

We kept him as a trade asset and a mentor if LA bolts. If LA stays, he looks alot better at starting C than the alternatives.

It's now fully guaranteed. Needed to waive him by June 30th.
No clue why we kept him.

If we are "going young", I can't imagine we keep him unless he is there to mentor bigs like he did with Meyers

You mean why did we keep Coach Kaman? :)

The local guys are all saying that Kaman's contract became guaranteed already. Woj's reports say no, but I'm pretty sure that the local guys are right. Hence, the "rumor" that the date moved. No one has actually said it has.

Much rather have a guy like Kosta koufos for similar money.

Kostas is not going to like Victor Claver's seat on the bench..you guys seem to forget how good Plumlee and Leonard are going to be. Kaman may be traded but I think he's going to be there to help Vonleh make the transition Leonard did.

Without Aldridge there is more than enough playing time to go around.

Woj still lists Kaman contract as drivable and non guaranteed

Not only is Kaman still an offensive threat, but a mentor to the young bigs. He helped Meyers along.

According to Jabari Young:

Kaman, 33, will make the full $5 million in the final of a two-year deal he signed with the team after the Trail Blazers elected not to waive the veteran center by the 5PM ET (2PM Pacific) deadline.

Don't know why Woj keeps referring to him as non-guaranteed. My guess is that he was kept as insurance or trade filler.

Even if he's here to start the season, he can mentor the young guys and then we can still trade him at the deadline.

In the Batum situation, no one knew that Martell and...name escapes me... had extended their contract non-guarantee dates until mid-July until after someone said they were non-guaranteed still. There has to be someone in the league office that signed off on a contract renegotiation like that who should know, but reporters are too busy quoting "sources" on sensationalistic "he had a good dinner!!1!" tweets rather than picking up the phone and doing some legwork.
Edit: It was Brad Miller

and funnily (or tragically) enough, I came across this quote from Olshey in the Batum saga:

It's been a back and forth and sometimes acrimonious negotiation between the Blazers and the Wolves that has dragged on for nearly a week. It all started with Batum's agent saying his client felt stifled in the Blazers' offense and preferred to play for coach Rick Adelman in Minnesota.
Olshey has been steadfast in his public stance that the Blazers would not that to happen.
"I don't believe in letting talent walk out the door," he said.

"Stifled in the Blazers' offense" LOL

Batum only had a zillion chances to assert himself offensively. The stifling is between his ears.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Chris and Dame have an odd couple like friendship? It's bothered Lillard in the past that each year his best buds get traded. Keeping Chris may be to keep Lillard happy and the locker room upbeat.

Even if he's here to start the season, he can mentor the young guys and then we can still trade him at the deadline.
I also think they are keeping Kaman to mentor the young bigs and I would not be surprised if Portland needed to terminate Kaman to get additional cap space then they would hire Kaman as a coach for the young bigs.

Problem with Kamen mentoring the bigs he has has shown attitude problems in a few organizations that he has played with. In the words of Kamen himself, Stotts is the first coach he didn't hate by season's end (something like that). I'm afraid what kind of mentoring he will give the young bigs.

He is an expiring contract and could be used in a trade . . . also I like the point about him and Lillard being close as being a reason to keep him . . . because Kamen doesn't seem to have much value as a player this year and isn't exactly a "company" guy. Seems like releasing him and taking another chance on a young player would have fit what the Blazers are doing this year.
