OT Christchurch shooting: multiple fatalities after mass shooting at two mosques – live updates

Aside from sheer horror, do you know what I saw when I watched that video?
A video game. One eerily similar to the ones children begin playing at young ages in this country and others. First person view, staring down the barrel of a tactical weapon, firing indiscriminately at anything that so much as moves. The resemblance is striking. I’m not suggesting video games are solely to blame or anything, I’m kind of just writing this as I go, but I definitely had sort of an epiphany watching that. Is it a stretch for me to suggest that mowing people down without thinking twice about it, albeit in a virtual setting, could still normalize the thought of doing it for real? I’m not pointing any fingers, just sharing some abstract thoughts I took away from watching that horrendous scene.

I've been saying this for years...the detachment of video game killing is very similar to what these mass shooters do..upgrade their weaponry, acquire lots of ammo and kill everyone for the win......seems like a pretty clear connection to me...add mental illness to the equation and you have shooters who've got a lot of practice at this shit...not a popular slant amongst gamers...I have this conversation with my son all the time.

Mental illness, prescription drug use, virtual normalization of murder, and yes, access to weapons are all things that on their own may not create a monster, but the sum of these parts seem to be a certainty at this point when examining mass shooters.

Video games now are so close to being real they are completely addictive.

I spent 2000 hours playing Battlefield 3 after 9pm every night for a couple of years. It was ruining my life. I didn't even want the Ps3 when my wife gave it to me for Christmas.

It may be barbaric but I'm starting to lean towards putting these psychos in public square stocks and letting the public abuse them before the trial for a week or so.....(maybe I've watched too many epic period films on Netflix)
BEFORE the trial?

The first thought that came to me on hearing of the killings in the Christ Church Mosque.

Mosque in Christ Church?

I was in Christ Church many years ago, a lovely place it was, as well as the rest of the country. I doubt you could find a Mosque in the whole country then.

It will be interesting to get the full story here, but this one maybe too convoluted to actually get the real story.

The back ground of the ex commie Aussie Shooter, coming from a country where guns a difficult to get, going to a country with a very new Muslim population
where guns are easy to get, raises hell among the immigrants.
Why?

For the purpose of causing revolt over guns in the US???

There is more, but it just reads like all the headlines of era have been cut and bagged for a random draw.

I suspect there is more to this incident than an outback Aussie who slipped free of his meds.

I can’t even link to it, but AOC’s already tweeting about it. It restores some of my faith in (D) supporters than many of her own fans are responding with some version of “too soon” or “this ain’t it” or something.

At least she wants a solution...

What the right's guy has to say about it is SHAMEFUL, and your silence here is deafening....

When it comes to something like this, id rather not soend the money to keep him breathing just to study his mental health( the only justifiable reason to let someone like this live).

Do your homework on capital punishment.

It costs WAY more than life in prison.

Edit: Also, our executions are privatized....

Fucking shameful...

LOL, I don't have enough time in the day to denounce every idiot I come across. If you think that there's anything in the last 10 years of my post history to suggest I listen to, agree with or care about Rush, I can't help you. News flash, I also don't denounce Hannity, Kelly, Maddow, Morning Joe, anyone on CNN, Charlie Rose, etc...when Rush becomes a Congressman, and the only one on my twitter feed minutes after the event, even then I'll only do what I did here and post that he said something whereby even his supporters don't agree with it. Actually, I probably won't, since that makes some stop civil discourse and I don't want to be a trigger for that.

Our capital punishment costs more than life in prison. That's not the case in many countries, including those socialist meccas of China, Laos and Vietnam.

I'd have to assume that would depend upon how young the criminal was when incarcerated and how long that person lived while incarcerated....decades ago I remember an uncle who was a prison guard telling me it cost 35 dollars a day to house an inmate not including medical care..just their.basic food and cost of living...Charles Manson lived a long time in prison....I have no idea what it costs for lethal injection but the chair can't be that expensive...it's basically a bunch of jumper cables, a pair of hair clippers and a hood with seat belts

All shootings mass or otherwise bother me, I’ll admit it. Maybe its a weakness I dont know... This one though, man it breaks me to read about it, Im not sure why I keep clicking in here or reading stories about it.
Just... really getting to me, and to all the people I argued with in here I really do apologize for letting my emotions get involved in discussing things.

Activist judges also get in the way. Ronald Gray's death sentence took 20 years to get to W's desk, and he signed off on the death warrant. Just took a federal judge to impose a stay, and 10 years later he's still alive. Nadal Hassan murdered 13 people 10 years ago and was unanimously sentenced with death 6 years ago, and is still alive.

It's also the ridiculous level of what the ACLU has gotten defined as "cruel and unusual." Firing squad, single bullet to the head and hanging are all en vogue at various places around the world.

Id love a link because that doesnt seem plausible at all. A one time cost is more than 30-6o years of room and board and the security it also requires?

Not to speak for @dviss1 , but many times the appellate process (legal fees, etc) combined with the increased “room and board” time (usually in a FedMax or something that costs way more that the Multnomah Co jail) that goes hand in hand with it, becomes really expensive. If, once sentenced, firing squad followed < 30 days later, you’re right. We just don’t seem to operate that way anymore.

Just do your homework. You have access to the same search engines as I. And I've spoken about it at length before in this forum. The posts still exist.

Search my posts for executions are privatized.

But regardless if you believe it or not, my statement is 100% fact.

Yep.

Let's do that.

When we give the govt the ultimate control over our lives, let's let them decide in 30 days that they'll end that human life by firing squad because you know, the fiscal year is approaching and we need to be in the black....

Yeah, whoever believes in that can Fuck RIGHT off, and I'll fight every government tooth and nail that wants to implement it...

That creep is so disgusting that it defies words to describe him.

Only due to buracracy. If expedited as @BrianFromWA states, it would cost far less. Facts are our government inflates the costs with prolonged process. In a case like this there is no need to prolong anything and i cNt find a study showing it costs more for capital punishment, if processed within a 6month time frame, would cost more than room, board and security for a lifetime sentence for a 30-40 year old.

Nothing when i searched.

I suck at searching though, admittedly.

He runs the entire right wing WITHOUT being in office.

He's the reason for the govt shutdown.

Y'all should be denouncing him left right and center.

Capital punishment is cruel and unusual punishment and doesn't achieve what it's set out to achieve.

Do you think it should take more than thirty days to determine this murderer should be put to death?
If not, then you agree there are circumstances where there is potentially unecessary prolonged process?

Id say 6months is plenty for a case like this and many others.

If you believe this guy shoild be kept alive at others expense, please explain why?

Read my post above.

And I swear conservatives act like hypocrites...

You all SAY you don't want govt to control your life but yet you're not only willing to let govt have the ULTIMATE control over our lives, y'all wanna fucking EXPEDITE the process to save money????

I... Just can't with y'all sometimes....

I dont know of any conservatives that say they dont want any control. Most of us want limited control. Meaning, some of us believe that certain things should have government oversite. Just much less than progressives, modern liberals and socialists.

People who want zero government control are basically anarchists. Please understand the difference.

When it comes to life and death, I'm betting a poll to the public would be a slam dunk for the public to want this man executed.

Every case is different and should be tried. But once convicted, why hesistate or prolong the sentance at the tax payer’s expense in a cash so clearly cut and dry as this???

Yep.

Some of us don't want that, but those of you voting differently seem not to care...

No, it's because they've already, due to the laws of the land, decided by a trial of their peers and through every check and balance known to some of the brightest geniuses ever to conceive a government, that some murdering, raping piece of human excrement has behaved so vilely, and beyond such a benefit of the doubt, that they have been deemed not worthy to continue living for fear of the evil they will continue to impart if left alive.
Yeah, whoever believes in that can Fuck RIGHT off, and I'll fight every government tooth and nail that wants to implement it...
Bully for the both of us! I believe, however, that I am on the right side of what our country is. You're welcome to go try to find countries that fit your interpretation of what a good country is, and I sincerely hope you find it. Until then, anyone who wants to change my country to be more like a dystopian welfare state can fuck LEFT off. ;)

He runs the entire right wing WITHOUT being in office.
Oh, I'm not so sure of that.

He's the reason for the govt shutdown. Y'all should be denouncing him left right and center.
I thought that was Ann Coulter. Or Trump. Or McConnell. I keep forgetting which. I thought you were one of those cheering for it, because you wanted Pelosi & Co. to keep standing up to him?

Capital punishment is cruel and unusual punishment and doesn't achieve what it's set out to achieve.
It can achieve the same end result as "suicide by police" which often goes hand in hand with these mass killers...this nut job killed 50 unarmed people...in this case I'm pro capital punishment..it achieves the end of one psychos ability to repeat a hate crime ever again..in NZ he'll get a life sentence
