CJ McCollum becomes a Blazer until 2021

CJ went from 15.7 MPG to 34.8 MPG and grew into our 2nd star player. Neil talked before the season about how the team was expecting big things from CJ and he definitely came through.

Guys who shoot .417 from 3 and score > 20 PPG are worth their weight in gold these days.

And after signing Turner and Crabbe to their big deals, it would be hard to justify sticking it to CJ because he's on his rookie scale contract.

This was a brilliant move, if not expected. Glad it was done now instead of waiting until the season is over. It shows the team has huge respect for the man.

We all knew CJ was going get max or close to it next year why not just get it over with and they did. I know they was going in the luxury tax next year just like the majority teams out there for next season.

If CJ gets hurt this season, the Blazers are on the hook for his contract - and it is a huge hit against the cap.

The Blazers actually took a huge risk here. This is a classy move that's not completely a basketball move. It's about respect for the player.

On the other hand, what if CJ gets a max offer sheet with a 4th year player option, or a trade kicker, or a front-loaded signing bonus, or some other undesirable aspects. The Blazers protected themselves from any of those.

What has a higher percentage of happening? I would say it would be the poison contract, so I think the Blazers took the much better road of chances.

Not much to figure out here. You lock up your best players when you have the opportunity (assuming your best players are good). Portland did just that.

Suddenly, Portland is in better shape, long-term, than OKC. That's not an intended slight at OKC, but it's an illustration of how quickly things can change in this NBA, and the importance of finding talented players who want to play for your organization. Portland is trying to build something here. Is it going to win a championship? Hell if I know. But I do know we're going to be competitive as hell for the next 5 seasons (barring injury).

It is a $100M+ gamble. The possibility of those other things is a much lesser risk.

The money was going to be spent either way on him. This year or next year. What has a higher chance of happening. another team offering a poisoned contract, or him getting a career altering injury?

I believe its the poison contract. The Blazers have to take a chance either way. I think they took the road that is more likely to benefit them. The poison contract is much more of a likely scenario than a career changing injury.

It wouldn't be spent if he has a career ending or crippling injury this season. That's the risk.

It would be spent on someone else then though. Maybe not as much, but it pretty much has to be spent regardless right?

Id rather take the chance of an injury over a poisoned contract and/or him leaving. Wouldnt you?

I mean life is about chances. How to we get better and build a core without taking a chance?

I don't think it would be spent on someone else since we will be over the cap next year regardless if we kept CJ or let him leave.

I should have clarified. Others not one other. That money would be spread out there is no doubt. We are looking to win in the next 5 with Dame. If CJ goes down we are in bad shape and will bring someone of impact in and that impact will require that money. Either way I think it would be spent. Or close to it all being spent.

The contract is guaranteed a year before it needs to be. Whether the team would spend his contract money if he were somehow to leave as a FA (I seriously doubt it), doesn't seem to matter.

And no, I don't think the poisoned contract makes any difference. We'd pay it.

Yes we would pay it but why? We probably just save about 20 mill by signing him now and the only risk was injury? Seems black and white to me. You don't build rosters and sign players based on fear of injuries, other than depth for depth... end of bench players. But your stars? You lock down whenever you can if your Portland..

If he gets hurt, we wouldn't have to pay $100M+.

He's signed a year ahead of when he'd technically have to. The Blazers could have eliminated that $100M+ risk by waiting until the offseason.

And again, possibly ended up paying closer to $120 mill with potential player options after a couple years.

I think everyone knows what can and cant be done., I think the issue is which risk do you take. Im with the Blazers camp in that they took the right risk. Look at AC this year?

I like that they took the risk, too. A lot of teams wouldn't have.

It's not worth arguing, OB. Denny is biologically incapable of considering the validity of another person's argument.

Denny? LMAO. And here I thought you were vehemently against it the way you were tossing rebuttals out! :)

I see this now. :)

You really expect me to read EVERYTHING you post? :)

Damn. I think I even liked that post too.

Apparently the Blazers did gain something here. According to this article, they didn't actually give him a max contract tied to percent of the cap, so if the cap goes up, his salary will not.http://www.blazersedge.com/2016/7/3...collum-extension-max-contract-nba-free-agency

Ideally:
Lillard (36) / Turner (12)
McCollum (35) / Turner (13)
Crabbe (29) / Turner (3) / Harkless (14)
Aminu (26) / Davis (18) / Leonard (4)
Ezeli (20) / Plumlee (18) / Leonard (10)

Someone's gotta go (Beibs?). Not enough minutes for Mo.

One more time and it's TORCHES & PITCHFORKS!! :smiley-195517897341

Did we really?? Yeah... I've been under that rock with the worms and pill bugs.

Ever think we signed him to a reasonable contract to keep him as a tradeable asset?

Watch your tongue!!! Or buy my Jersey/...
