CJ MCCOLLUM NAMED KIA NBA MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
PORTLAND, Ore. (April 22, 2016) – Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum has won the 2015-16 Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award, it was announced today by the NBA.
McCollum finished the 2015-16 regular season with career highs of 20.8 points (44.3% FG, 41.7% 3-PT, 82.7% FT), 3.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.21 steals and 34.8 minutes in 80 games (all starts).
“Being recognized as the Most Improved Player in the NBA is a testament to the dedication and commitment to his game CJ has shown since joining the Trail Blazers,” said president of basketball operations Neil Olshey.
Currently in his third NBA season out of Lehigh, McCollum (6.8 to 20.8) raised his scoring average by 14.0 points from last season. The last NBA player with a larger increase was Tony Campbell (6.2 to 23.2) from 1988-89 to 1989-90 (minimum 50 games played in each season).
“CJ worked extremely hard to have the season that he had this year,” said Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts. “His work ethic and commitment to improve is the reason he is deserving of this award. He is an example to everyone what can be accomplished with diligent practice and a belief that you can always get better.”
The 14th player in team history to average at least 20 points per game, McCollum, 24, finished ninth in the NBA with 197 three-pointers, which is the fourth-most by a Trail Blazer in a single season.
“CJ has been an exemplary player both on and off-the-court since arriving in Portland, and we’re so proud to see his efforts rewarded with the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award,” said Trail Blazers president & CEO Chris McGowan.
McCollum becomes the third Trail Blazers player to win the award, joining Kevin Duckworth (1987-88) and Zach Randolph (2003-04).
The award was determined by a panel of media members who cover the NBA as part of the Kia NBA Performance Awards, a series of on-court performance honors.
As part of its support of the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award, Kia Motors America will donate a brand new Sorento CUV to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro – which provide quality after-school and summer programs designed to help young people develop the qualities needed to achieve academic success, become responsible citizens and leaders, and live healthy lives – on McCollum's behalf.
