I've been getting into a lot of Classic Rock lately. I really like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, and stuff like that. I know a lot of you guys are into rock so I was wondering if you have any song suggestions. Also, can you give me some current bands that have a similar sound to some these older groups?

I'm not as knowledgeable as some of you guys when it comes to rock so I'm probably going to embarrass myself at least once in this thread. Just a heads up.

I really <u>LOVE</u> Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits, guess I got that off my dad

I don't really know any modern group playing similar music. 'Tis a good thing you started this thread though.

Listen to Michel Polnareff. Go to the recommendations thread for a link.

Well, Swish, classic rock is a huge blanket term (and GNR isn't really classic rock anyway). There are many different styles of it, but going along the lines of the type of bands that you've listed so far, here are ten kickass classic rock bands/songs that I'd recommend -

Black Sabbath

Jimi Hendrix

Thanks a lot Voodoo. I'll check all of those out.

King Crimson
Frank Zappa
Queen
Deep Purple
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Jethro Thull
Yes
Genesis
The Allman Brothers Band
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Eagles
Aerosmith
Rush
Grateful Dead
Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship
Moody Blues
Fleetwood Mac
AC/DC
Boston
Santana
ZZ Top
Blue Oyster Cult
Steve Miller Band
Doobie Brothers
Sly & The Family Stone

Most of these stand true to the "classic rock" factor of Top 40 hits and actual good albums to back up those singles, however some go far into the deep end of progressive, metal, jazz, funk, and the such genres. Typically, they're know for being classic because their music has stood the test of time. Enjoy!

Chicago is the Greatest baby. Saw them at soldier field for free 6 mos back

Try Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as well. I'm not sure if that's considered classic, but I like a lot of the artists you like and I like them as well.

You can't go wrong with 2 bands that are more recent than "classic" but will become "classic" in about 10 years:
Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins.
They both have kickass riffs and good melodies.
If you like Zeppelin, AC/DC, and G'n'R you will definitely like those two bands.

You might also like:
Oasis
Nine Inch Nails
Janes Addiction - this is probably the closest to Led Zeppelin that came out in the 90s

these 3 will also join the classic list at some point

Yea Smashing Pumpkins are very good... I would not consider Iron Maiden classic rock
tongue.gif
That's pretty hard, and I hate it
biggrin.gif

GNR, AC/DC, and Zeppelin are all awesome and some of my favorite bands. Most of the other good classic rock has already been listed but I'll pint out my favorites/most highly recommended:

Black Sabbath
Queen
The Who
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Hendrix
Pink Floyd

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Oasis
Nine Inch Nails
Janes Addiction</div>

These are all very god suggestions for somewhat more modern bands that have similar style to the ones you like.

Smashing Pumpkins will never catagorize as classic rock. They're alternative. Oasis is indie despite being a mainstream band that is just the genre now. Anyway, both are good bands, but I don't think they fit the bill here on what Swish is looking for.

Swish, don't forget about Queen. Nobody made more original tracks then Queen in my opinion for the genre you're looking for. Also as I've mentioned Michel Polnareff. He's the most ripped off artist in history. Artists in the US think it is perfectly fine since his stuff is only well known in France and Germany.

How the hell are the Nine Inch Nails classic rock? I demand an explanation.

In my post, I asked if anyone could list some current bands that have a similar sound to some the older bands I liked. I think he was doing that.

Thanks for all the help guys. I got a lot of downloading to do tonight and I'll make sure to get back to you all and tell you what I thought.

Since when were they rock anyway? I always thought they were more Industrial/Alternative.

I guess there aren't all that many newer bands that have the 'classic' sound. Wolf Mother is always thrown out there as the most similar new band, and there's some validity to that; I think they sound like Sabbath on occasion

It's truly unfortunate that in recent years rock music has spiraled down to the point that all you hear on the radio is some punk with black painted nails screeching about how much it sucks to be 16 years old.
ugh2.gif

I agree wholeheartedly with the groups VC and Sasha suggested, though.
cool.gif

The only new name I'd throw in is Tom Petty - he's got more of a blues-y sound to his rock, and he's one of my personal favorites. And Frank Zappa is a fucking trip
laugh.gif
I'd love to play some of his stuff for somebody who's never really listened to rock before, and hand them an album to look through, and just watch that person's expression change LOL.

Download some Judas Priest. Eat Me Alive and Painkiller are 2 of my favorites by them.

Thanks a lot bro. I had heard of Suck My Kiss before from reading posts by you and Mamba but had never actually listened to it. After finally hearing it, that song is sick. Thanks for posting all the videos. I'm going to download a lot of these tonight.

<div class="quote_poster">Sasha Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">How the hell are the Nine Inch Nails classic rock? I demand an explanation.</div>

I said they will be classic rock in about ten years. Stop nitpicking my posts - I'm offering the kid some stellar listening advice. And yes, they are "rock", their music is mostly guitars and drums with a rock arrangement.

The guy likes AC/DC, Led Zep, and G'n'R.
I suggest Pumpkins and Oasis and you suggest some dude named MICHAEL POLNAREFF and you're questioning MY recommendations? Lmao. Swish, start with my posts. Most of the bands these other guys listed are real old-man music. I mean, blue oyster cult?

laugh.gif
I didn't even notice that Starship was hiding in that list
laugh.gif

CCR has really been making a comeback around here - I'm heaing their stuff all the time all of a sudden, everywhere! It used to be that when I spoke of them, I had to explain a bunch of stuff, but now everyone is like 'Dude, they're so pimp, I've liked them forever'

They don't though. They are TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Refer to what Rafy said.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">...on the Sly recommendation, but Fleetwood Mac and Starship?...</div>
I liked Jefferson Starship before they became Starship and everything went to hell. They had some good tunes. Same with Fleetwood Mac, they had at least two good albums.

Are you seriously the most ignorant thing on these boards? Oh yeah, I forgot old men can't make good music. ****, there go all my CD's...

Yeah I agree, this member is the worst to hit the forums in a while. All I've seen throughout the posts are attacks on other people whether it being their opinions or otherwise. Well, cultural ignorance is bliss it seems.

okay let's rehash. kid asks for recommendations. i offer my 2 cents. then of course people start to nitpick my posts, including Sasha a guy who posted how "drugs are useful mental tool" some time back. so when you say i'm the worst, recognize that my post in this thread was about hooking the guy up with some recommendations, your post was about criticism of my recommendations. yes, i'm opinionated, so what? do you want a board where everyone just strokes each other or do you want a board where people are themselves and speak their mind? maybe I will download some Michael Polnareff, would that make you happY?
happysad.gif

believe me i like adding nice friendly posts, but then someone always comes along and pokes holes in it, so...

Instead of being ignorant you should actually understand posts before you reply to them. Example: I actually wrote that I enjoy the music you posted because I'm a fan myself but that they don't catagorize as classic rock. It doesn't mean that it isn't legendary music, it just means that it doesn't fit into catagory with AC/DC, Queen, Polnareff, etc. Notice this came after my recommendations of "classic rock."

Try to read correctly before you cry me a river over nothing as I don't flame people on here or bash their opinions. I don't actually care if you listen to Polnareff or not, that's your decision as with anyone else. The saddest thing is that you judge music before you even hear it.
