Glad to hear it went well Riv! I’ve been dealing with Afib for 6-7 years now, and it’s only been the last 6 months or so that I have finally acknowledged that alcohol is a contributing factor. I tried my best to dispel that notion but the proof is in the pudding (or the Afib episodes after a night of 3-4 pints). It sucks to an extent but legal weed (in moderation) softens the blow. I can still have an occasional drink but one is now pretty much my limit. If you can find a way to blame all this heart trouble on being stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge please let me know!
Weed is not totally legal. It's still against Federal law.

When applying for my last two security clearances, they gave me a hard time for smoking weed in college. I owned up to it completely and eventually got both my clearances. One clearance came from the NSA. An earlier one before I smoked in college came from the U.S. Army.

Yep, that's Lemon Island although the shape has changed over the years as the sand bars on the Columbia tend to shift and change with the swift current. We stopped camping on Lemon Island around 1962 as we then went to a camp ground on Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho which coincidentally had Farragut Naval base for basic training partly due to it's incredible depth of over 1,000 feet for a fresh water lake.

Isn't that place in Idaho where they trained submariners?

There was absolutely nothing misleading in my post and I am very well aware of how it was done. I have a framed picture in my room from Ray thanking my dad on the 50th anniversary of the event. He also did a warm up run from his marina around 92nd and Marine Drive to Astoria and back. He was not only an awesome boat builder (he helped my dad build our Defir boat) but a helluva skier as well. I use to spend a lot of time at his shop and marina on the Columbia as a young kid as it was right across from Government Island. Here's a more detailed story of his life.

Great article!

Yep. It's now a state park and campground on the south end where as we camp on the north end. The Navy still has a research center there. The lake is huge and can get pretty nasty at times with it looking like an ocean and over 3' waves but one of the most beautiful parts of the country and when the weather is good an outstanding time. It also has some of the best fishing in the USA where a rainbow trout can be had at around 40lbs and a lake trout breaking the world record at 43 lbs.

Well I just got home from the procedure....still a bit blurry from being sedated but all went well...chest feels sunburned from being zapped...they got my heart beating at an almost normal rate...50 percent...60 is normal..before I was at 25 percent...and the pulse is no longer erratic...go back on Sept 16th for a checkup and will have minimum 3 month recovery...but all is good news...I no longer have nearly as many dietary restrictions which is a relief....still will stay low sodium and I'll not drink alcohol ever again as it can cause a relapse...I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and support....you guys have been great! Left home at 4 am to make the appointment so I'll probably crash out early tonight.

This is outstanding. One step at a time. Two weeks ago, my dad, 71, was with his hiking group on Mt Hood and suddenly collapsed and has a massive heart attack. He did not make it. I have been devastated and lost. He lived 3 miles from me. My kids are so sad as well. I have to make sure my mom makes it through this. They were one week from their 50th anniversary. Anyway, I only share because it was so sudden and even the nurse, EMT etc could not help. It was instant. Just sharing because I’m thankful someone like you (who I don’t know) at the very least has tremendous doctors helping you, you know what you can do to help yourself. You should be full of hope and treasuring each day.

Dang, sorry for you loss Calvin. Good on you taking care of your family in this trying time.

Glad you're on the mend River.

Pointing the bow at Sitka in the spring.
I won't be single-handing after that though. Grandsons aboard while we visit Petersburg, Wrangle, Ketchikan and a multitude of anchorages in between. Might even talk one into crewing back to the Columbia river.
sounds like the makings for fond and shared memories. hope you have crew for the back tack. an extra pair of young eyes would be a blessing, especially on the inside. be safe.

on the inside. be safe

uh, I need more than one extra for that chore. I think I will run inside the QC Islands but outside Vancouver on the return.
If I had hands that wanted to do it, I would but not yet.

Man I'm sorry about your dad....my life literally blinked ...5 doctors told me they'd never seen someone with so little heart function walk on their own two feet into an emergency room..they were shocked I lived...puts the simplest things in life in perspective....just a week ago I had my first cup of coffee in two months..probably what I missed the most...I have to manage this for the rest of my life but I'm going to control it..never want to go through that again

I almost went there when I got out of NTC in San Diego but I told them I was way too claustrophobic to be in a submarine...I don't even like elevators

I have been thinking of one more run to Hawaii. I can do that single handed without a worry. But...
I know it is not like my old days there, it seems very restricted in anchoring. I suppose I don't to do it unless I can get a slip somewhere to call home port while there. I think a winter would due, perhaps even 2019/20. Having the MarAzul there is just to have a place to have call home. It is for me anyway. I am thinking of a little fishing for the kids but perhaps relying on the locals would be better. Grandpaw need not be the guide. What do you think?

With the turbulence and recent spate of natural disasters in Hawaii, I think the timing would be risky for a trip there..volcanic islands are rising and busting up all around there these days...wouldn't want to risk it myself

Does it involve more than the big island?

sound float plan that.

cape spencer was where one would make the decision to go into cross sound or stay outside heading south, weather dependent. twice round trip a year leaving newport or the river around the first week of january in order to be in kodiak for the cod opener on january 20th every year. then return south in april-may to prosecute the hake fishery till end of july. back up north for the c-d component of the pollock fisheries then south to the yards in end october early november.
often shitty with higher gusts, lol. weather should be outstanding in the late spring early summer for you and your kin. i found ketichikan waterfront touristy even 20 years ago with the coming of cruise ships.
always went through wrangell narrows in time to make petersburg which had better facilities for the boats and definitely more of a fishing town than wrangell for the bigger vessels. never stopped sitka cause really wasn't on the way, but feel i might have missed out on something. knew a lot of real professionals from there. enjoy yourself.

best call the harbor master in kona for a slip. if i was planning to anchor for an extended period kawaihae north of kona would be my first choice. deep water dock and maintained channel. most interisland freight comes to the west side through the port. protected anchorages inside. a dockside lay could be done in kona at the charter/fuel dock. tied to mooring balls on the bow and stern lines port and starboard to the dock. turning basin big enough to maneuver. need reservations and a 30 day limit. can get the harbor masters number for you if you would like to talk story. i will take grand kids fishing any saturday, sunday or monday. curious , how old?

never say fishing before going, kula kai is the fish god and a very mischievous fellow. we go holo holo or messing around family style to confuse him.

Geez, docs have warned me that my heart could suddenly stop with no preceding symptoms if I consume too much potassium.

Thank God, you've got your wife, kids and mother.

If you ever need a hand for a week or two, I’m retired........I haven't been on a sailboat for almost 20 years and to say my former skills would be rusty is a serious understatement but I’m always game (some might say gamey)........

I have made my feelings known in pm's with no responses. All any of us want is consistency and fairness.

If I have missed any of your PM's I apologize. I do always look at any posts that have been flagged and take the appropriate action.

The posts were actually flagged as opposed to pm's like I mentioned. My pet peeve is if a person is banned for a violation and the exact same violation happens 5 or 6 times shortly after the ban then why isn't the punishment more severe? It does no good to ban someone and then just delete the post or the word with no further punishment. At least one of the posts is still up.

off the subject but did you get a good break this off season? you certainly have earned one

Been a stressful summer. Need to start planning for the start of the season meeting with the Blazers. That's always a grind, a delicate dance of begging and demanding swag and events for the forum.

Simplest answer, this forum will always be run as more of a community than just a regular forum.

That means we will work with people instead of trying to find ways to get rid of them.

Permanent bans will always be the very last resort and that is after many conversations privately with the person.

Temporarily banning someone from individual threads is something new that we're trying.

Honestly, the results have been mixed if that is an effective tool.

Because this is a Blazer forum, actually "the" Blazer forum, personal insults in the OT section vs the main forum will be treated differently.
