Conan out, Leno to take back Tonight show

Nothing in your excerpt contradicts what I said. He would look like he's making excuses if he gave the reason about the differing number of stations, so he didn't.

Dave's lead would have been even bigger if not for the disparity in stations carrying him.
-------------
I read the reason about the number of TV stations in a couple of different places a few years ago. I don't remember where.

Sorry, but I will need at least a link that indicates that your statement is correct.

I don't watch the 2 shows for more than a couple of minutes now, but I started watching Johnny in 1967. I have many memories of funny incidents on the shows of Carson, Joey Bishop, Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, Cavett/Parr, etc. That last one didn't last, and a Leno/O'Brien juxtaposition wouldn't either. It doesn't work when they share time. Conan knows this and I doubt that he'll accept it.

If Jay only did well because of the TV stations, why did Conan immediately lose the entire gap Jay had over Dave?

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Conan should go back to writing and producing for The Simpsons...now there's a formerly great franchise that's been destroyed.

I haven't seen a new episode of the Simpsons in at least 5 years.

Conan, classy as always, got it right.

But I suspect NBC never intended to push back The Tonight Show.

I think we can all agree that Jay Leno is a fuck, right? I see this blowing up in his elongated face.

Nope I'm fairly certain that this is all Leno. Dude is failing in his current time slot so I'm sure he begged to get his old job back and with Conan doing less than stellar, NBC decided to side with him.

If Leno were any kind of a decent human being, he would have retired and let Conan take over per the original agreement. We already knew he was a piece of shit for sticking around and undercutting him with a 10pm show. Now he's trying to steal Conan's job. Someone should start a petition to get that unoriginal bastard off the air.

It'll tank. Conan's audience won't watch, Leno's audience is too old to keep up with the changes, and curious viewers will tune back in just to remind themselves he sucks and then not watch again.

I've always been a fan of Conan and at least liked Leno, at least until this stunt. Leno is a total asshole for accepting this change and essentially screwing Conan out of his new job. Leno's horrible primetime performance is the reason that not only all the NBC affiliates have suffered a ratings hit at 11pm, but also a huge reason for the Tonight Show's mediocre performance. Leno basically screwed every program airing after him, and then has the balls to accept this new gig, knowing full well he's further fucking Conan over. Unlike Leno, Conan has class, refusing to screw Jimmy Fallon over by accepting the later time-slot, even though we all know Fallon shouldn't even be on TV.

I won't be watching Leno again. What a fucking dick.

I guarantee Leno's ratings will go back to where they were when he goes back. People love that guy, obviously not the type that posts at a basketball forum, but women and older people love the guy.

Yeah, Conan's audience is mostly younger. The older people never really connected with him.

I wonder what kind of deal Conan will get from Fox? It would be nice if Conan got a Letterman type deal that no only includes hosting a late night show but also allows him to develop TV shows as well. While Letterman's only hit has been Everyone Love's Raymond I could see Conan putting out some funny shows.

Apology accepted. One less fan. I feel like Conan.

Obviously, it's because Conan would have done even worse without the station difference.

More thoughts:

So many talk shows, so little choice. They're all the same. Leno and Letterman yell like carnival hucksters. This isn't vaudeville. The only recent quiet type in the Carson mold was Chevy Chase, and that was about 18 years ago, and he lasted 6 weeks.

Remember when Letterman could have taken the time slot of ABC's Nightline with Ted Koppel, and he declined because he didn't want to destroy that show. Leno has no such class toward Conan.

This is the second time Leno stole someone's show. The Carson show was supposed to go to Letterman, but scheming backstage machinations gave it to Leno.

If this is the biggest TV mistake of the last 10 years, then the biggest one of the previous decade may have been when NBC replaced Carson with Leno instead of Letterman.

Because of grey hair, Leno and Letterman lose a generation. I never understood why they and Carson didn't dye their hair. Carson dyed it a ridiculous silver in the early 70s, but he stopped.

Like fellow Harvardite Dick Cavett, O'brien stutters and appears uncomfortable. It makes viewers feel the same. Cavett was much worse, way too intellectual.

Comcast buys NBC, and this happens. Figures.

We will have to agree to disagree. You're the first person I have ever heard say that. Without proof, I don't believe it.

Time for Dave Chappelle to make a comeback.

Leno backer Paul Reiser published an outlandish editorial at HuffPost today... read it if you like to be condescended to.

Seems like sides are forming now.

Leno has Jerry Seinfeld, Reiser, his established audience, and I suppose a cadre of old comedians and celebrities who have been with him forever. O'Brien has essentially every interested person under 40, Patton Oswalt (below), and I'm sure a lot of the SNL people at NBC. Obviously acknowledging Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daley in this process will get them on his side as well. So far Craig Ferguson and David Letterman have also chimed in with pro-Conan, anti-NBC sentiment as well.

I just want there to be some kind of resolution to this. It's dragging on.

Yeah but it's kind of fascinating too, right?

I mean I feel for the whole crew that Conan brought with him to LA. He moved all of his people cross-country and just as they are getting settled they find out they're all out of work, presumably. At least until Conan gets a new show and supposing it's in LA/Burbank as well.

But this is the most interesting late night has been since I don't know when.

Conan was great last night during his monologue. He poked fun at it and did a great job with it.

True. Late night talk shows, along with SNL, have pretty much been irrelevant in the last few years.

Wouldn't it be crazy if the whole thing was a publicity stunt?

Racist!

Oh, never mind.

Thought you called him an aboriginal bastard.

Fixed.
