Wealthy Hamptons party hosts use rapid tests for guests to keep up lavish lifestyle: report
Guests would test before events, sometimes to the cost of $500 per test

By Peter Aitken | Fox News
Hamptons elite party-goers are indulging in concierge coronavirus testing, sometimes to the tune of $500 per test, according to a report in the New York Times.

In an interview with Dr. Asma Rashid, the Times outlined an environment removed from the more common scenes of the pandemic.

Rashid insists that for the rich and famous, the summer was not much different from any other. The only change, in most cases, was COVID-19 testing.

“We’ve gone to these private, private, private events, where they have me sign a ‘nothing you see in this house can be leaked’ document,” Rashid said. “This is still a party town.”

While New York City built up its testing during the pandemic, other parts of the state were not able to. Suffolk County, where the Hamptons is located, lacks significant testing infrastructure.

However, the area – well-known as a vacation destination for wealthier New York residents – has money to spare, and summertime residents can spend to ensure they’re virus free.

“Every time there is an event, a protest or Fourth of July celebration, there is higher demand,” Rashid said. “The way I would describe our growth is exponential,” she continued, explaining how she tripled her staff to keep up with the demand for coronavirus testing over the summer.

Testing can take up to 30 minutes, and Rashid often administers it to guests in their cars. If they test positive, they’re turned around.

Rashid is not the only doctor seeing an increase in business; residents are seeking tests for peace of mind as much as for safety.

Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, NYC’s deputy commissioner of disease control, cautions that a reliance on the rapid tests is risky as they aren’t totally reliable.

“No test is 100 percent,” Rashid told the Times. “A negative test does not preclude one to not be carrying the virus.”

you mean the drug the FDA revoked for emergency use for Covid just 2 months ago?

like I said, it's going to be lies

Apparently it's newly FDA authorized convalescent plasma to treat COVID patients. Basically, using the plasma from COVID survivors. With this in mind, I'll plan to donate my plasma once I'm fully recovered.

Trump getting major kudos from the FDA leadership. Should bode well heading into the RNC Convention.

But what does hydroxychloroquine have to do with the survivor plasma?

The FDA leadership was appointed by Trump. Therefor, the kudos will only come from Trump's 40% base. No resulting bump in approval.

Apparently it's newly FDA approved convalescent plasma....which I'm not familiar with.

what the fuck did trump have to do with the plasma? Did he invent it?

for fucksakes, read this:

* 'The use of convalescent plasma is not a new concept. By giving patients plasma or serum from patients who have developed antibodies to a particular virus or bacteria, an infected patient is given a massive boost to their adaptive immune system, which confers passive immunity. It has been used since the 1800s.

The first valid trial was done in 1892 with diphtheria using blood serum initially. It was produced from animals who were infected with Diptheria, but soon whole blood or plasma recovered from donors with specific humoral immunity were identified as a possible source of specific antibodies of human origin. In the 1920s, it was used to treat scarlet fever. It was also used to treat and pertussis until about 1970. Horse serum was used to treat tetanus until the 1970s as well.

During the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918 convalescent plasma was used as a potential therapy with mixed results. It has been used in a variety of viral infections, although studies have been small and inconclusive. One success was the use of convalescent serum to treat Ebola virus

lol...yeah, go trump!

stay tuned: tomorrow trump claims credit for gravity

LOL...who at the FDA is praising trump and for what? Was it people he put into jobs at the agency?

or was it the head of vaccine research at the FDA who this week promised to re-sign if the trump white house meddled in the drug approval process. Why would he feel the need to make that announcement? Or is it all just more fucking bullshit surrounding the FDA doing the job they've always done?

But what does hydroxychloroquine have to do with the survivor plasma?

Heh, it doesn't The hydroxychloroquine was a rumor. The convalescent plasma was the true message.

* "On Sunday afternoon, Donald Trump introduced his latest would-be miracle cure for the COVID-19 pandemic, yet again dodging the basic needs of testing, tracking, and isolating local outbreaks (things that require work) in favor of a newly called out One Weird Trick that will make everything fine again without doing that work.

This time around it's not an anti-malaria medication or an extract from a highly toxic plant brought to us by the My Pillow guy, but blood plasma. Now, convalescent plasma treatments may indeed be of some use in COVID-19 patients—but there's a big, big catch.

While the Trump White House wants, for purely political reasons, to highlight the use of convalescent plasma in COVID-19 patients as a "major therapeutic breakthrough," that treatment regimen is already in fairly widespread use. Nearly 100,000 COVID-19 patients have been treated with convalescent plasma, made from the blood of donors who have recovered from COVID-19 and have therefore developed an antibody response to the virus—in theory, resulting in an elevated immune response in the new patient.

Despite its use on 100,000 COVID-19 patients, though, there's still no solid medical evidence that it actually works. While a Mayo Clinic study shows what may be a small but statistically significant difference in survival rates for patients who get plasma earlier in the course of their disease, rather than later, even that may turn out to be an artifact of COVID-19 rates improving over the duration of the study due to other treatments.

It's the murkiness in teasing out, even after this fairly widespread use, whether any effect at all can be seen in patients that discounts White House claims that the treatment is a breakthrough: "In my mind, treating 98,000 people with plasma and not having conclusive data if it worked is problematic," National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases associate director John Beigel told Wired earlier this month.

Though the data so far doesn't suggest that the effects of convalescent plasma will be a game-changing treatment, at least not in isolation, Trump's action today was a cookie-cutter reenactment of what he and his advisers have already done earlier in the pandemic. A week ago, hydroxychloroquine-promoting Trump adviser Peter Navarro again attacked members of the Food and Drug Administration as being part of a "Deep State" acting against Trump, a sentiment that Trump himself followed up on in tweets. This press conference was the result of another pressure campaign against government health experts, in which the FDA was pressured to grant "emergency" authorization of a treatment on Trump and Navarro's say-so, despite a lack of scientific evidence proving it to be effective or useful. It comes over the objection of agency scientists.

It's not a breakthrough. It may have some positive impact, unlike hydroxychloroquine, which was soon found to worsen patient outcomes, but blood plasma has not been the miracle cure Trump and his usual array of anti-science political hacks are hoping for. The Trump team is being dishonest with the nation, yet again, purely as a publicity stunt. Trump cannot competently steer the nation through a nationwide pandemic; both golden boy Jared Kushner and Trump's Fox-culled team of conservatism's most-wrong talking heads have all been proven incompetent. Declaring one new miracle treatment after the next in the hopes of stumbling on something, anything that sticks is now the only pre-election pandemic "plan" Trump, Navarro and the others have.

Also, Donald, you would think at least one person on your staff could have taught you how to correctly say the word "plasma" before holding a goddamn press conference declaring it to be your new favorite cure. Jeebus, people.

of course

the further we get into this the better the chances are for effective treatments. Like that article said though, after 98,000 patients you'd hope there was more evidence it's effective than they have to this point. But like just about all things medical, there are almost never miracle cures. And the treatments that are effective take time to develop, usually time measured in years, not months

I'm 68. I hope to hell if I get it there's more ways to treat it than there are now

I can't imagine anyone wanting it to fail, either. However, it should undergo testing before they tout it as good to go.

In a time of emergency we should allow the scientist and medical community to decide what's worth trying or not, not those with political motivations. Im sure there have been enough test to approve it for emergency use in an effort to help.
Many are more interested in affirmation versus information, as to how they view things.

No, it hasn't got the green light from Fauci at this point. It just has the green light from Trump and his political appointees at this time. When Fauci says okay, then I'll go for it.

Fuaci told me early that wearing a mask wasn't effective in preventing getting the virus, he said those that were sick should only wear them. Said there was zero scientific evidence that it would be a deterrent?
He like many learn on the fly about things.

Dr. Fauci is one of the world's leading experts on infectious diseases. I have an endocrinologist who trained under him. That endocrinologist is so good that he got the specification for thyroid cancer changed because of my case. He considers himself far inferior to Dr. Fauci in terms of ability to practice medicine. No, I'm sure that Fauci knows what he's talking about. I suspect that some of us didn't understand the context within which he spoke.

For some reason I put some trust in The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, probably more so than Fauci. But I do like Fauci and am impressed at 80 he's still working away rather than playing in a forum all day.

Plasma therapy is older than you and I Lanny. And believe it or not the whole medical community are not sworn Trump soldiers, in fact many think don't give a shit what he or any other president think. They are experts in their field, like you in yours.
Behind the scenes there has been a great effort by renown clinics and doctors to create a fast lane for therapeutics that have shown some positive results.
