OK, my wife woke up this morning with a sore throat. No temperature. She did the rightly thing and went and got tested for "The COVID". It could be a up to a 5-day wait for results. Meanwhile, she's telling me that she needs to be under quarantine and is setting up the house accordingly. I'm, like, Wha??! Hey, I'm not gonna challenge her safety efforts, so I guess I'm sleeping in the guest room. Great.

This hasn't gotten truly "apocalyptic" because of the efforts to tamp down the rate of spread. What do you suppose the death rate would be if we hadn't done that and it had spread exponentially as it would in an uncontrolled environment? About 20% of cases need some form of hospitalization for treatment. The death rates we've seen so far are bad enough, but if the ERs and ICUs of every hospital were jammed full, and if medical supplies were used up treating millions of people at the same time, you'd see death rates that would look pretty apocalyptic.

The death rate is the number of people dying divided by the number of people catching the disease. Less people catching the disease means a proportionally less people dying from it but the death rate remains the same.

You are correct, of course, Lanny. I meant it in the more general way as in the rate at which we’re seeing people die. I should have simply said “the number of deaths”.
