Could the Rangers buy out Dan Boyle’s contract in June?

Boyle has a no-move clause and is also on a 35+ contract. Because Boyle has a no-move he can reject the idea of going on waivers and go immediately to the buyout. (CapGeek

I didn't realize this could happen and only cost us 1.5 on the cap each of the next two seasons. Seems like a great move to save 3 mill on the cap next season. And while we'd have 1.5 mill of dead money on the cap two years from now, that still gives us two years of the cap going up even a little each season to help cover that dead money in two years.

I would say this is the way to go, unless Boyle goes crazy and is a big part of us winning the cup. That 3 mill next season could be huge.

With that being the case, and MSL taking a big cut or gone, and the cap going up a little, and Zucc taking 4.5 mill we are not in terrible cap shape IMO. Good to see.

If this is what the NYR are thinking, not sure that they shouldn't move him today and retain some (1.5M) salary. I would think there is someone out there that would take a chance on him under these terms, and we could get something back, maybe a decent pick. Would have the same cap repercussion for us I think, and we wouldn't come away empty handed.

or...Dan Boyle will show improvement now that the top 6 will be set in stone. I think with the addition of Yandle there will be less rotation of partners for Boyle and he will have to think less out on the ice.

Interesting. I can totally see that happening. If they feel McIlrath can take the 6th defenseman role as the right handed guy, Boyle is gone. AV needs to wake up on Mac. The team is soft on defense. It shows vs. big teams.

That was my first thought also if the buyout happens with regards to getting big mac up here. Said to be killing it defensively down in hartford and ready for primetime. Final piece to the puzzle. AV can't be in love with boyles play any longer as he is getting beat defensively like a rag doll.

As a 6th dman I have ZERO issue with Boyle. And I also expect he will get better as he stays healthy for a longer stretch. So I am good with Boyle in that role.

To me they may think buyout if he struggles in the playoffs, that was my only point.

Saw Mac play on the 22nd, he fell down half a dozen times, several without anyone even near him on the ice, and he didn't look any faster in foot-races (is that a word?). Looks to me like his skating is not better at all. Wonder if his knee injuries have hampered his ability further?

Don't disagree with the need potentially for our 7th D-man to be the Mac "type", but not sure Mac is going to be the guy...

More than likely they will tell him he won't play if he doesn't waive his NTC and he'll accept a limited trade.

I don't think they should buy out boyle. Unless the rangers feel that they have TWO NHL ready defenders in the system, i just don't see them doing it. I think boyle took some time to get his legs and hands back and if he wasn't out for 15 games he would probably lead the team in points for a d man.NOW I do believe guys like allen, mclrath and hunwick can fit in but boyle is signed for one more year and the guy is trade able at all stages of the season. given the setup boyle will probably play with staal which may elevate his game even more.
