Suns May Look To Knicks For Cap Room Again, This Time Marion

CNNSI - Sports Illustrated's Ian Thomsen reports that Isiah Thomas might take a run later at Phoenix forward Shawn Marion, whose remaining deal for four years and $63 million could become prohibitive if the Suns retain Joe Johnson and re-sign Amare Stoudemire to max deals.

By sending Kurt Thomas to Phoenix last month for Quentin Richardson, Thomas essentially supplied the Suns with Marion's replacement at power forward. If the Suns are intent on wiping Marion off their books, trading him to New York prior to the February deadline for the expiring $14 million contract of Tim Thomas would be a logical move.

I would take that move in a heart beat. No questions asked. Hopefully something like that could happen with those expiring contracts. The only question is will the Knicks be title contenders with this move.

What I wouldn't give to see a legitimate player at the 3 or 4 for the Knicks. However, I have to turn a skeptical eye to this one. Isiah didn't really supply Marion's replacement, he really just made it possible for Amare to replace him at the 4 and have Kurt man the 5 as a floor runner. That doesn't really set them up for a deal of Marion.

It would be great to see, but as the Knicks have proved time and again, restrictive contracts don't mean a damn thing if you have a front office willing to pay up when it counts (or in Isiah's case, doesn't count.)

And when you have a lineup destined for a championship, restrictive doesn't really make a difference if it's already put together.

Marion would be a major upgrade, but why would Suns want to trade him? Didn't they sign him to a good contract?




Come on guys, you know Isiah is interested in getting every baller from Chicago.

Wow I have absolutly no idea why the Suns would make this deal. Even if they want to clear cap space for Joe Johnson, I would still rather have Marion then Joe Johnson. Knicks would look great with this trade, even though they have too many small forwards, look at in the Atlantic for the Knicks if this goes down.

This sounds too farfetched. The Suns are looking to make a championship run while Nash is still able to play a run and gun type of game. Trading Marion for one of our expiring contracts just to save some caproom will be a set back from that goal. So I dont see this happening. But if it does happen I like the Knicks chances(especially if they retain Houston). We have our defensive big man in the middle in James. A good low post scorer in Sweetney. A small forward who actually plays defense and rebounds the ball in Marion. And a bunch of talented guards as well. But this deal almost certainly will not go down.

Well, 4 max deals is way too much for any team, let alone the small-market Suns. They have to choose either Joe Johnson, Amare, or Marion to give up. I can guarantee that they are keeping amare, that leaves JJ and Matrix. I'd take JJ, he can play 3 maybe 4 positions, relives Nash when he goes down, and plays good defense. Marion is also versatile but older and not as good of a scorer, and it doesn't help that Bowen absolutely shut him down in the playoffs. Its a tough choice but they cant have all 4 unless the owner suddenly get MarkCuban-itis.

The New York Knicks should be called the New York Suns.. with Marbury, Richardson, Marion and Nate Robinson if, although I highly doubt it, the trade goes down. Joe Johnson apparently wants to play for Atlanta so I don't see why the Suns would do this trade. Unless they are 100% sure that they will match JJ's offer, they won't do it.

SF: Marion/Ariza/Penny
PF: Sweetney/Lee/Malik/JYD/'Mo
C: James/Frye/Butler

That team is the best team in the Atlantic and a huge step from last season.

I think the Suns would do this just becase they don't want 4 max contrats if they decide to match Atlanta's offer on Joe Johnson.

Brown has declined the Knicks job and I think that the Nets have a better roster everywhere other than SF.

....? They arn't title contenders now, and they wouldn't be title contenders if Marion came to New York. Eastern contenders, maybe, but not a championship caliber team, no way.

That's actually debatable. If the Knicks get Brown and Marion, they will be on the same level as the Nets.

The Knicks would also be better than the Nets upfront. Sweetney can overpower either Collins or Kristic. Jerome James overpaid or not is better than Collins or Kristic. Hell even Frye will be as good as either of those two at the start of the season and I think Frye will be decent at best. Not to mention the Nets are a very shallow team(even more shallow with the loss of Scalabrine). So trading an expiring contract for Marion should make the Knicks at least as good as the Nets.


Anyway I think Isiah Thomas should be fired.

Well its kind of hard to compare it that way. James and Sweetney would probably own Krstic and SAR down low, because that's the type of players they are. Krstic and SAR would probably own James and Sweetney around the perimeter, because that's the type of players they are. BUT you have a deeper frontcourt with JYD, Rose, Taylor and Frye, so that puts your frontcourt in front of ours. And DO NOT underestimate Krstic.

I dont know about you but I'd rather have my bigs control the paint than conrol the perimeter. But that's just me... And I'd never underestimate Kristic, I actually like him but he still cant stop Sweetney when he's determined to score.


Anyway I think Isiah Thomas should be fired.
