Well, Dallas just pulled one out against NY, but they had to go to overtime to avoid a 6-game losing streak. If they continue to stink, I wonder (a) if they'd consider a radical re-build, and (b) if they'd want LaMarcus for Nowitzki, and (c) if we'd want that. It would put us in a position to go for it right now, and it would be a nice response to the Lakers picking up Gasol.

That is all.

Why would we want to trade LaMarcus for Dirk?

I agree that LMA may not be the best fit for us (or maybe he will be), but I could easily see why Dallas would want him, and why he'd want to go there. That's why I had him going out in the LeBron Pipe Dream Trade and Nowitzki going to Cleveland.

I don't necessarily like Dirk for our team, though I wouldn't boo him out of town.

volume shooter with declining numbers who's not known for his defense. probably a terrible fit for us.

A few years ago, maybe. Dirk is already 30 and his better years are behind him. LMA is only 23 and he is still getting better. I'm all for adding some veterans to this team, but not via any trade that mortgages one of our main guys.

I think our official "window" will open the season after next.....hopefully next....but with Dirk's age, I don't think he'll be a good fit. We have the 3pt shooting covered!

Nowitzki doesn't fit Portland's window and he's declining. Aldridge is young, very good and still improving. Since most of Portland's talent is still not near its peak, I don't see any reason to try to sell out for this season.

If Nowitski was 3 years younger and actually played a lick of defense I might consider it, but since he fulfills neither characteristic I think we'd probably be better served holding onto Lamarcus and letting him work his way out his 3 game slump.

Wanna talk trades? How about KP packaging up some of our redundant players along with Raef lafrentz and getting a legit, veteran starter to fill the 3 or 1 spot?

You know what would have been interesting.... acquiring Paul Pierce before the Celtics got Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Imagine Pierce on this team. Yikes.

Lol..I hate when people make threads just because they have a big night.. He's been playing terrible the rest of the year, and in a big decline. LMA has a bad game with bad neck, and these stupid threads come up. Typical.

If people complain that LMA is soft, I think the world would collapse if we traded him for Dirk.

well dirk is the better player.

Now he is, but as discussed about he is on the down swing and LaMarcus is on the upswing. Timing is everything in building for a Championship. I'd rather take my chances with LMA than take on Dirk.

There was a trade on the table for our #3 pick (later traded to become Martell Webster) plus Travis Outlaw and Nick Van Exel (as trade filler) for Pierce. I don't know which side backed out.

Hmm... I guess if we're playing the hindsight game I would keep the 3rd pick and take Chris Paul. :biglaugh:

Boston pushed hard for that pick.

A pick they would have used on Chris Paul, according to the Boston Globe.

That woulda been smart of them. I don't know if they would redo it if given the chance......hmmm

Not if it meant we wouldn't get Oden, Brandon, LaMarcus and Rudy

Hmm. Had Boston and Portland done that deal...and Boston had not traded away Joe Johnson for nothing...

They could have a team of Chris Paul, Ray Allen, Joe Johnson and Kevin Garnett. A championship contender now with two great, young/youngish players for the future.

I remember this draft clear as day. It was the first time we had a top-3 pick in a long time.

It was Portland who turned Boston down. He was pegged as too old as we were rebuilding from the ground up.

How would it have stopped us from getting Roy or Rudy? They were separate trades that had nothing to do with wins and losses. LMA and Oden on the other hand... maybe.

There are two lines of thinking:

A) Dirk is a proven loser.

or

B ) Dirk is only 30. Why do people consider 30 to be "too old"? And he was frickin MVP only two seasons ago!

I like our team as it is, but we'd have to think about it. Dirk is a perennial All Star and like I said, was MVP. But he's a proven loser when it matters. I say keep LMA.

30 is not too old, but since it will probably be at least a couple of more years before we're even seriously in contention for the conference finals that makes him 32 or 33 and I wouldn't expect there to be many more years left in his legs, then we're back to square one again looking for a power forward.

"Proven loser"? (shakes head) Sheesh, some of you guys, I swear. Yeah, he's had more than his share of choke moments, but geez, lay off and have a little class.

Dirk's a cool dude and a great player. I would never consider that trade given the Blazer's window opening nice and wide soon...but man, just...man.

i disagree that the team is currently 2-3 years away from being a serious conference finals contender, but if you put dirk in aldridge's place the blazers definitely would be legitimate contenders to win it all this season.

i don't see the trade being necessary though and i wouldn't want the blazers to make it.

He choked vs Miami and choked vs Golden State. In one of the big games in GS series, he only scored 8 points. I'm not saying he's not a cool dude. That has nothing to do with it. He's a proven loser. Not an opinion.

not true.

against golden state, you can say he choked but i'd say it was more of a team and coaching effort. dirk definitely played poorly but it was also a terrible matchup for him. a team full of athletic guys with enough size to bother him defensively but that he would have trouble guarding. and instead of playing like they did over the course of the season that won them 67 games the mavs changed their approach and tried to play golden state's game by going small way more often than normal. so even though dirk played poorly, that series was lost as a team not by dirk.

against the heat, he averaged 23/11. hard to really call that a choke even though his team lost.

and yes, saying that anyone is a proven loser is an opinion. there are 5 guys on the court for each team at any time during the game. wins and losses come as a team. and really, dirk has been pretty successful there. i mean even though they lost to the heat, he did lead them to the finals against some pretty good teams.
