Damian Lillard signed a supermax deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, the only NBA team he has ever known, in July 2019.

According to a former teammate, he could have chased a ring with a superteam instead.

Earl Watson, who played for Portland during the 2013-14 campaign, said Lillard revealed the offer to him. He also tweeted that the Trail Blazers point guard said, "Big EJ, I want to stay in Portland, build it with my teammates & beat every mf super team."

"I wouldn't even say it was somebody offering me to go to another team," Lillard said. "It was just something that was constantly being mentioned to me, like 'You should do this, you should go here.' And I just said, 'That's not what I wish to do.' Where I was drafted, I live there comfortably, my family is comfortable, it's a great organization. … The grass ain't always greener. For me, I feel like we can build something and get it done in Portland. And I really believe that. I don't just say it to say it."

I admire Lillard's competitiveness and loyalty. You couldn't draw it up any better. For his sake, I feel for him. I'm not sure there's another person in the entire organization with a similar mindset and he kind of needs that if they're to accomplish what he's aiming for. Maybe the superstar respect he's carving for himself will be an acceptable consolation prize 20 years from now when he's rocking in his LaZBoy.

Yeah, a Lillard/Irving poll made more sense a few years ago, when they were pretty similar quality players (though Irving had more hype). Lillard has improved to a remarkable extent (considering how good he already was) and is pretty obviously a significantly better player.
