Since he made his NBA debut in 2012, Damian Lillard has become a sensation on social media. In no small part, this notoriety has come from his weekly #FourBarFriday competition on Instagram, which culminated in a rap battle in New Orleans over All-Star Weekend.

Now, he’s entering the rap game for real, telling CSNNW.com that he plans to release a mixtape later this year, followed by his debut album.

"If my profile continues to increase, I think I can go platinum with my music,” Lillard told CSNNW.com. “Not to knock anybody else who has done it, but I can actually rap. I have a story to tell. It’s not going to just be about basketball. I have more content than that. With the way I know I can get down, and the producers that I’ll align myself with, there’s no reason not to think I couldn’t go platinum. Shaq proved it’s possible.”

You’d be surprised how many NBA players have seriously tried to grab the mic in an attempt to create ear-popping, hip-hop flows that translates to commercial success.

There are some notable ones who have tested the musical landscape such as Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Tony Parker and Allen Iverson, just to name a few. While each may have been talented in their own right, to say they were a success would be an overstatement.

Shaquille O’Neal stands alone as the only NBA player to actually turn a profit in the hip-hop game with his debut album “Shaq Diesel,” a 12-track compilation that went platinum in 1994. The seven-footer can also toot his horn when it comes to longevity in the field, having produced five albums in total.

That’s the sort of impact Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard is looking to make when he eventually and officially, takes the music industry by storm.

HomerLovesKoolAid plays a mean jazz flute, he should send in a demo tape to Lillard.

Geez.... is Portland going to be big enough for him in 3 years?

He probably also thinks he can fight in the UFC at the 185LBS wight division and be champion. Everyone has to fail sometime. Seems like Damion has a big ego and it might be good for him to fail.

Kobe its you I despise and loathe
More than a slimy toad or a grimey mold
My eyes behold how you're a giant load
Of something id find inside my kamode

Failure is the reason why he's so successful. Get your mind right. ;)

Good to see Dame is 100% focused on his day job and the fact that the team is in a death spiral. :banghead:

Man y'all are a bunch of wet blankets. I think this is cool as hell.

Yeah... I can't think of a single rapper/athlete that was actually good.

Dion Sanders?

Kobe?

Shaq?

Allen Iverson wasn't horrible, but nobody is going to take him seriously.

He better not be thinking about trying to play at the Blue Monk...

The idea of this leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Shoulda drafted Drummond... ;)

Four bar Friday has gotten really big. I have no problem with Lillard doing this. Actually it's kinda cool.

If dame is good people will take him seriously. Idk if he'll be good but I bet he's been writing songs for awhile now so it won't be rushed at least

Sheed rapped in his day, though just as a guest on songs, from what I remember/heard.

Kevin Durant was a guest on a song, and wasn't too bad. Id like to hear more.

Simple. Not playing on a highly funded AAU team. Not being recruited by the schools he felt he should have been.

Being on a team that lost 13 straight to end the season... that would be a fail too. lol.
