sensationalism, ads that you can't skip through, shock jocks, idiots making phone calls, non-news being blown up as major breaking news, etc etc

why deal with this when you can simply download podcasts from people who actually know stuff?

For clicks, man, clicks. ESPN just let Abbott's outlet go a couple of years ago. Abbott's out on his own now. for the first time in 15 years.

His website had a pretty good reputation when ESPN bought it, and a lot of good reporters came to prominence there. I can't speak for Abbott's track record breaking news himself, though. He's pretty much a digital marketer, IIRC. And, you've got to admit, running with something like this definitely took traffic to his Twitter and probably TrueHoops page. It's not like he didn't have something to gain by running with something like this regardless of the credibility of the source. If it doesn't play out, he can say either the source was misinformed, or the Blazers changed Dame's mind, or he can just move on to the next story because most people who jumped on his coverage won't immediately jump off.
