Yankees 1B Greg Bird suffers shoulder injury, to miss season
3:15 PM ET

    • Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Yankees first base prospect Greg Bird will have right shoulder surgery Tuesday and will miss the entire 2016 season.

The Yankees said Monday that Bird's torn labrum will be repaired by Dr. David Altchek at The Hospital for Special Surgery. The team said the injury is a reoccurrence of one originally sustained last May.

Bird, who turned 23 in November, made his big league debut on Aug. 13 and took over at first base when Mark Teixeira got hurt. Bird hit .261 with 11 homers, 31 RBI and nine doubles in 157 at-bats and had been viewed as protection against injuries to the oft-hurt Teixeira, who is entering the final season of his contract.

We'll see what happens now- possibly Beltran seeing some action at 1b? Opening RF for Judge?

More Headley at 1b with Castro playing 3b on those days with Refsnyder now in the mix?.....Ackley?.......

Shit! This is bad news- but the show must go on.
Maybe some AAA- AA kid getting a looksee at 1b?

Maybe an occasional appearance by Arod at 1b?
We'll see how the Yanks deal with it.
Tough break for Bird - goshdarnit!

I have a major problem with this. In a day and age that monitors every aspect of a pro athlete's life, it make me wonder how a medical staff could miss this. The injury supposedly occurred early last year, it just doesn't add up to me. In another sport, I was not disappointed that the Giants got rid of their Strength & Conditioning Coach for a reason, we led the league in Injuries. Look at our recent minor league history and see how many have broken down. Our we as an organization just missing it?

Hey Frank buddy hows it going? I've had both my shoulders done & both times it was a torn labrum. Both times it took 3-4 months for a full recovery. So if he gets this done NOW! there's absolutely no reason why he couldn't be back at the latest in June. Hell even if you give it 6 months you're still only talking about late July.

I saw this and yelled out, " Not him! Wha happened?"

I agree that this injury timing is very strange.........only
on Cashman's Yankees............

If he gets the surgery NOW he should be able to return well before the end of the season.

Lemme guess, the last time you stepped in a puddle of water it was Cashman's fault?

I don't think Cage is directly saying that this Bird injury is all on Cashman but lets be serious, SOMEONE had to know SOMETHING before now. Like I said I've had torn labrums to both my shoulders & I went to the doctor as soon as I felt continuous discomfort. I can't believe Bird didn't tell someone & that someone didn't report it back to Yankee brass. Just saying.

With all due respect Mr. Rick you didn't have to recover to the point of playing professional baseball. While he's not a pitcher it's a year ending injury for sure. Pineda was on the shelf for a long while after his procedure. Just crappy bad luck for Bird but hopefully he get it taken care of and comes back strong and ready to go.

I get that Vic but a 20 year old can heal a lot quicker than a 54 year old (1st shoulder surgery) & a 61 year old (2nd surgery) can. Especially with all the equipment & physical therapists he has at his disposal.

The season ends October 1st, this is only February 1st. No reason if he gets the surgery NOW & probably should have been done already that he can't be okay for the last month or two of the season. JMO.

Healing is one thing. Healing to the point of being able to throw a baseball and swing a bat regularly is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Lets just hope that Teixeira can stay healthy. I know.........................................................................that's funny.

I'd advise some of these other guys like Judge and Sanchez to grab a first basemen's glove and see what they can do.

Not a bad idea Vic, it would definitely give these kids more ABs.

...thank you. Cashman IS responsible and accountable for the roster. No way he did not know about this last year.

He's not a pitcher so who really knows. If he never complained about it there would've been no reason to suspect he had shoulder damage.

That's the whole thing though Vic, they did know about it. Last May while playing for Trenton the shoulder put him on the DL for a month. After the season BRIAN CASHMAN said that Bird complained of the pain again but both team physician Christopher Ahmad & Dr David Altchek noted no change in the MRI & recommended rest & rehab (Sound familiar?) They suggested the same thing with Tanaka & he ended up getting surgery & AGAIN with Teixeira last season before they discovered the broken shin bone.

"When Bird ramped up his activities the last few weeks he felt the pain again" CASHMAN said, and this time BOTH doctors recommended the surgery. Dr Altchek will perform the procedure at the hospital for special surgery today. SOMEONE needs to be held accountable for all these DELAYED surgery findings.

Have to laugh. Brian Cashman is a control freak.
Nothing gets past him.....lol

It must be everything.......
except what goes on with the team!!!!!!!!

I'm just playing devil's advocate. As NY Giants fans Cage and I can certainly attest to the injury stuff and how frustrating it is. The Victor Cruz situation is a perfect example. The thing is we really never know everything that has happened and what went on behind the scenes. I doubt they put him at risk by hiding his injury and insisting that he plays. The earlier MRIs might not of shown a tear so rest and rehab to avoid major surgery might of been the best course of action at the time. To me the bottom line is that he's injured, needs surgery and is going to be out. I don't get hung up on the fact that maybe he could've been back if they did surgery in November as opposed to now. It is what it is.

There does seem to be a pattern in the Yankee org to tread lightly before surgery (Tanaka & Tex to name two.)

Couple of things regarding the Bird injury.....and of course a possible injury to Tex during the 2016 season.

Yanks will probably put Tyler Austin (1b) on the fast track at AAA.
McCann may see considerably more time at 1b with Sanchez seeing more playing time behind the plate than previously expected.
Ackley probably gets a chance to show SOMETHING at 1b.
Imo- preferably Beltran being competent at 1b with Judge getting the call for RF.
Bird's injury is certainly NOT a good thing - but maybe a couple of other "good" things could result from it.

According to McCann in todays NY Daily news, when he suffered the same injury as Bird he returned after 222 days (that would put Bird around mid August) he said the only thing that bothered him was the throws down to 2nd base which Bird would not have to worry about. And that includes 2 1/2 weeks working up in the minor leagues. And its for this reason he thinks Bird will be back THIS season, as do I.

Thanks, always welcome encouraging news.
GO YANKS!

...Bird is a backup 1Bman...I see no reason to risk bringing him back early for a handful of games near the end of the season.

I agree with you...............

1) if it is only a handful of games
2) if the Yankees are 10 games out
3) if Teixeira is still healthy
4) If Ackley is playing adequate BU for Teixeira.

If healthy in August & the race is close & Teixeira is out, I say give it a go.

I know......................that's a shit load of IF'S!

I'm just weighing the risk/reward of bringing him back early vs acquiring another short term 1Bman at the trade deadline, if needed....again, what's the advantage of bringing Bird back early?
