Denver police said Wednesday they hope to equip 800 police officers, including all patrol and traffic officers, with body cameras in 2015.

The cameras will not only protect people who make legitimate complaints, authorities say, the technology should also protect police from false allegations of excessive force.

"The body camera will clear up those moments of conflict," said Denver police chief Robert White. "We're very comfortable that we are going in the right direction."

The equipment will cost about $1.5 million, White said. The Denver City Council must still approve the expense.

"I'm hoping financially we can afford them," he said. "Technology is such that they are affordable. It's achievable."

Officers will wear the tiny cameras on their glasses or lapel. According to new protocols, officers must turn them on virtually every instance they make contact with citizens. Failure to do so could lead to discipline, White said.

Officers will download the footage following a call and they will be stored "in the cloud," White said. The cameras record audio as well as video.

"Citizens should know officers are being held accountable," White said. "The only officers who would have a problem with body cameras are bad officers."

First pot and now this. What kind of liberal hell has Colorado become?!?

Cops are going to be so fucking swamped with minutiae they won't get anything
done but that will stave off out trouble.

Sounds good to me, every officer should have a camera on them at all times. To protect themselves, and the citizens they are sworn to protect and serve.

All federal money for police, should mandate the police wear cameras. Cameras are so cheap now, it will help honest cops prove they're honest. Imagine how much simpler this case in Ferguson would go for either side!

WE SHOULD MANDATE EVERYONE WEAR BODY CAMERAS. THAT WAY THERE WILL BE NO QUESTION WHATSOEVER.

I've read that they are hiring Lois Lerner as a special consultant to come in and train the officers on the proper use of these items!

800 cameras. 1.5 million dollars. $1750 per camera? Seems steep. Maybe that includes monitoring equipment, or, I dunno. But 2 grand for a little mini camera seems like one of those things that government pays out the ear for when it shouldn't be that high.

i want an internet where you can watch any cop in the nations video live and leave comments on it

First rule of govt. acquisition: why buy one when you can buy two for 4x the cost.

Tax the rich. Who cares what govt. spends.

I mean, I know we always joke about the 500 dollar toilet seats, and the thousand dollar hammers at the pentagon, but seriously. Just walk down to REI and buy a shit load of GOPros and make the police wear a helmet or some shit. Becausse for 1900, you know the video you see on it will still be the ultra low budget scrambley shitty kind, and not some ultra high tech, justifying 1900 dollars 4K type clarity.
