Derek Chauvin, 45, is found guilty on ALL three charges of murder and manslaughter in death of George Floyd: Minneapolis cop is cuffed in court and led straight to prison where he'll spend up to 40 years
  • The jury returned its verdict on Tuesday afternoon after just 10 and a half hours of deliberation
  • As the verdict was read out Chauvin looked on silently in the Hennepin County courtroom
  • Jurors spent three weeks listening to testimony about the day George Floyd died under the weight of Chauvin's knee during an arrest outside the Cup Foods convenience store in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020

"The maximum sentence for second-degree unintentional murder is imprisonment of not more than 40 years. The maximum sentence for third-degree murder is imprisonment of not more than 25 years. The maximum sentence for second-degree manslaughter is 10 years and/or $20,000."

So now it depends on how the judge feels, I guess. If he throws the maximums at Chauvin, it would be 75 years in prison, essentially a life term. But it could be as little as almost nothing and a fine.

  • The judge has revoked Derek Chauvin's bail. Chauvin has been taken into custody where he will wait for his sentencing.

  • The Judge says it will be approximately 8 weeks before Derek Chauvin is sentenced for murdering George Floyd. Chauvin had previously waived his right to have the jury decide his sentence.

  • Chauvin faces up to 40 years in jail.

The CNN bullet points said (emphasis mine):

  • Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.

So that makes it sound like the sentences are cumulative. Which makes sense, otherwise what's the point of multiple charges?

I believe a judge can impose sentences consecutively or concurrently.

I am surprised, I thought they would split the baby, so to speak.

Unfortunate it took a murder the whole world saw and a slew of white cops testifying to get accountability.

The right verdict. Justice is served

Someone explain this to me though... how can you be found guilty of murder AND manslaughter?

Someone explain this to me though... how can you be found guilty of murder AND manslaughter?

The second-degree unintentional murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death "without intent" while committing or attempting to commit felony third-degree assault. In turn, third-degree assault is defined as the intentional infliction of substantial bodily harm.

The third-degree murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life."

The second-degree manslaughter charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "culpable negligence whereby the person creates an unreasonable risk, and consciously takes chances of causing death or great bodily harm."

'The jury said, please don't hurt us': Tucker Carlson suggests the Derek Chauvin jury caved to 'the mob' with guilty verdict while Sean Hannity says it was correct and ABC's Sunny Hostin breaks down on air
  • ABC News legal analyst Sunny Hostin said through tears that the guilty verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial brought her some relief
  • 'I am so relieved that this is what justice finally looks like for my community,' she said shortly after Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges against him
  • CNN's Don Lemon and Van Jones also weighed in on the verdict on Tuesday
  • Both hosts agreed that there's still a lot of work to be done, including officers holding one another accountable for their actions
  • Fox News' Judge Jeanine Pirro said that the 'verdict is supported by the facts'
  • Pirro also said that she believes that the 'verdict will be upheld on appeal'
  • Fox News' Sean Hannity told his viewers that the video evidence in this case was 'substantial, it was overwhelming, and it was appalling'
  • But Hannity's colleague Tucker Carlson suggested the verdict was influenced by politicians and that the jurors likely felt threatened

I saw Jason Johnson. He was not furious with the verdict itself but furious with the idea that everything is solved and now go home.

Tucker Carlson is an appalling and shameless piece of shit. The fact that that moron has any kind of audience at all (let alone a national audience) says everything about today’s America that we need to know (in case we were already too oblivious or stupid to have already figured it out). Racist shit spewers like Carlson, Hannity et al make me ashamed to call myself an American. What disgusting examples of so called human beings......

I predicted 2/3 conviction. I wonder if the prosecutors regret not going for murder 2 considering they won. The Judge was right about this having mistrial potential though. Knowing the system and how it loves status quo, expect his appeals to take a looong time.

Carlson is a pregnant tick in a human ear and Hannity is a blow hole but he finally showed heart. You knew Sunny could break down any minute.

Don't be ashamed. You didn't vote for their master. You are American....... and they are Not.

I can't see a mistrial based on a Congresswoman expressing an opinion.

Tucker has gone full on white supremacist. Rants that Black and Hispanic voters take away his rights by diluting white voter power.

Dude is found guilty.

Protesters still destroy things downtown.

Someone explain this to me.

"The maximum sentence for second-degree unintentional murder is imprisonment of not more than 40 years. The maximum sentence for third-degree murder is imprisonment of not more than 25 years. The maximum sentence for second-degree manslaughter is 10 years and/or $20,000."

A lot of time they will run multiple sentences concurrent, rather than back to back. Lot of possible outcomes to examine.

I wonder what the state is going to do with him? Do they keep him isolated in solitary confinement for his entire sentence or do they send him to a prison with a large white supremacy gang? Those are the only ways I can think of for him to serve sentence and not be killed.

He will be in protective custody along with all the other cops, pedos, rapists, narcs, and other extreme weirdos who are at risk of being killed in general population. Should be an interesting group for him to run with.
