Doesn't it save them a couple million on the salary cap? Was thinking I read before though his salary paid would of been $8 mil or whatever it was, the way the contract worked it would count as $14mil. Weird world where you pay someone $4 million more to count $2 million less against your salary numbers.

Great for him, but would of course been great if he would have agreed to less than that with the same salary "cap" impact. Not how it works though...

I have a feeling that the Yankees might go back to the only caps are those on the players heads. In the case of Jeter I am pulling for him to have a nice final season.

According to Sherman it does NOT save any money towards the cap it increases it by a few million bucks. Sounds like Jeter and Hal worked out this deal. My guess is Jeter was going to opt out and Hal did not want to create another Jeter circus and gave him extra money. Do you think they opt out of trying to get under the 189 luxury tax?

No one ever ever takes less money from the yankees or gives them a home town discount. Why would they, based on how they have handed out 1 bad contract after the next all these years.

I also read this deal was conducted directly thorugh Hal. Nice that they employ the highest paid GM in the game, who not only sucks, but isn't even involved in a deal struck with the captain of the team and face of the franchise. Why they just don't wake the hell up and fire the bum is beyond me.

Just another reason why fans need to stop complaining about the GM, there is no GM, never was, and any GM fans think would be better would not be, because he would never be allowed to actually GM, and we don't know how good or bad Cashman is or ever was because chances are he's never made a decision.

That being said I hope this is a farewell contract, I have no problem with signing Jeter, and no problem with the money, but his time has come, I hope to hear a retirement announcement next spring and see him get his tour like Mo.

Disagree because its pretty clear these days when cashman is or isn't involved in a deal. Its also probably his own fault Jeter stonewalled him this time around after Cashman publicly lambasted him last time. Then there is that little farm system issue. Cashman is terrible, and if he isnt even involved, I ask again why they keep him around and pay him more than any other GM on planet earth.

I've said a million times this season dating back to the ESPN boards that Cashman was never a real GM. I can't complain about the contract to Jeter. They're rewarding him for many years of service and much success. It's not like they're giving him $25 million.

^^^...I obviously agree with you on Cashman being a figurehead GM...but considering that the Yanx are supposedly trying to lower payroll, I so no reason to raise payroll by rewarding Jeter for anything. The player he was 2-3 years ago does not warrant his "raise" IMO.

...hell, if anything, if Jeter really wanted to help the Yanx he should have gotten with Hal and said 'Look, I know I didn't help the team last year and still took $17 Mil of your money...how 'bout if I opt out, and you pay me my $3 Mil buyout money and then sign me as a FA for one year/$5 Mil"?

I can complain and I will. I feel Jeter as a figurehead, future hall of famer, who has made millions in baseball could have said this. " Look, we need every dollar that we can allocate to fill the Titanic size holes we have on our roster. I'm a leader and I'm stepping up...I was hoping he would do something like Pedrosia did but no. Now, mind you, he has no obligation to do so, guess I was just hoping it wasn't about the money.

Look what Pedroia did with the Sox. He gave them a hometown discount to stay with them. I think he could have gotten more by waiting and testing the market. I don't know if I ever remember a Yankee player doing that. It may have been Paul Oneill but I am not even sure on that one. Seems such a shame Jeter couldn't have stepped up and showed Cano how it is done.

There's enough Cashman mistakes to not give him any benefit of the doubt. Cashman signed Feliciano, Cashman signed Youk, Cashman traded for Wells, Cashman didn't pull the trigger on Cliff Lee because he thought Nunez was untouchable, Cashman has oversaw a pathetic draft record over the last 7 years, Cashman gave CC another $25M for 1 year for no reason at all, Cashman stupidly took damaged goods in Pineda because he was too lazy to ask for a full physical before the deal was made...

Not saying that he gets overruled (both Soriano deals, which made him look foolish), Arod, but Cashman was the one who trashed Jeter a few years back, and it looks like Hal decided to remove him from the process this time around.

But if you think that move means you can label Cashman a 'figurehead' and having his hands tied - then you are simply not paying attention to the moves he DOES make, and how bad they have turned out.

Using the Cy Young theory of nobody has won more or lost more, the same is true with Cashman, nobody has won so much, or lost so much, given the assets he has had to work with. When Vette points out that he was overruled on both the Soriano's, it has to stop and make you wonder doesn't it. I have owned businesses, and as an owner, if you can't see that Cashman is stale bread, then you deserve what you get. Oh wait, that's why we have so many challenges with this team isn't it.

...I think the point was whether or not Cashman as the GM, has full control or autonomy, and he evidently doesn't. And no one is saying or implying that he has not had his own fair share of faux pas. But if you're going to give someone the title of General Manager, let them manage. Otherwise, there's likely a lot of confusion and second guessing going on throughout the organization.
...imagine yourself with a job that requires you to make decisions affecting the whole company but you're apprehensive about making decisions because you never know when the owners will intervene and slap your wrist or completely circumvent your moves...how would you feel?...not a very confident and pleasant situation. Again, Cashman is by no means without his faults but either give the man the juice do what you hired him to do without meddling, or replace him, or do the job yourself...but one way or the other, lay out the plan of action and stick to it.
...is there another MLB team that conducts their business the way the Yanx seem to?
