If Pelicans can't trade Robin Lopez, CAN buy him out by July 5 for mere $500.000 to work on needed flex for Evans & Jrue Holiday's arrival

Is there a waiver process for guys that get bought out? Or can a team, like let's say the Blazers, sign him immediately after.

If there is a way to get a free asset, Olshey will find it. LOL

Neil probably flashes his AARP card at McDonalds.

Waivers are a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A player stays "on waivers" for 48 hours, during which time other teams may claim the player and assume his contract. If no team has claimed the player before the end of the waiver period (which is always 5:00 PM Eastern Time), he is said to have "cleared waivers." The player's contract is terminated and he becomes a free agent. The only way to terminate a contract early (other than with an ETO -- see question number 57) is through the waiver process.1 The waiver period includes weekends and holidays.

A team can claim a waived player before he clears waivers only if one of the following is true:

The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
Done. We can snatch him before he actually clears waivers and take on the 5.1M contract
The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 25), and the player is on the last season of his contract.
The team has a trade exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 83).
The player has a minimum salary contract.
None of these apply

And as we learned last year, the space isn't off your cap until a) someone's claim is approved or b) the 48 hours are up.

Why would they buy him out? Why not just dump him on us?

If they buy him out wouldnt you think we didn't really want him?

I don't think it's a buyout situation. If they put him on waivers and he clears, NOP owes him 500k guaranteed salary, which stays on their books. If someone claims him, then the 500k doesn't go on their books.

A trade also preserves his bird rights. Would like him better if his rebound rate was higher, but have no problem if this is the best we can do at center.

If Pelicans don't waive Robin Lopez by Thursday -- paying 500K buyout -- his $5.1M and 5.3M salaries the next two years become guaranteed.

How would you guys feel if we picked up Lopez, then wait until the Houston deal comes through. If it does; then use Leonard + Matthews to land asik?

I know it makes us a little thin at SG; but I think we maybe CJ, Barton and crabbes can work by committee

I wonder if this put a wrinkle in the wait on Asik plans in regards to making a move on Lopez?

so we have Asik and Lopez? Not that interested, personally.

Portland is a possible destination for center Robin Lopez, with Indiana and others on a short list in pursuit, league sources tell Y!

Asik and Lopez would be "fine," not great, not game-changing and not enough to convince LaMarcus to stick it out ... but "fine."

True! MT @WojYahooNBA: #Blazers a possible destination for Robin Lopez, w/ Indiana and others on short list in pursuit.

And this continues to be the most underwhelming summer as a blazer fan in quite a while. Lopez?? Smh

were you thinking we were going to be pushing for Dwight?

Lopez another good value asset "gathered" at 10 mil next 2 years, Splitter is not that much better at he just got 9 mil per, get him and we can still sign another player. This FA crop is weak and I am very happy we are not overpaying here

I don't get why people are down on Lopez. What other realistic options does Portland have? I'd rather pay a $5MM to Lopez and have to give up something small in trade than pay D. Jordan his $10-11MM and give up a bunch of players. Lopez had a solid season last year.

please explain what you are expecting thats reasonable? seriously.... theres a short FA list and most of them are underwhelming theres no way dwight is coming out this way so what the fuck are you expecting? some kinda trade for KD or some shit? i think Lopez is a decent pick up if asik isn't available. if i really had to list them in order id probably do Asik > lopez > dalembert

exactly, a mid level C on a very good contract who had his best yr last yr and just turned 25, take it and run!

The Pels may not have to move Lopez:

It is possible Tyreke Evans never signs the proposed $44M offer sheet with Pelicans, sources tell Y! Sports. Still a fluid scenario.

Lopez comes cheap. Get him. Center by committee is our best option. We need three of them. Most (not all) end up hurt so why pay a lot for them. There are not that many good ones any more. So just get the best you can.

Centers are becoming more like offensive lineman these days. You need them to succeed, but really all they are just good for is the dirty work. They have little skills and they are not going to score much. Just make sure you have enough good ones to last the season. Lopez would be a good addition.

I am embellishing a little here, but I am not that far off.

With so much trade interest in center Robin Lopez, it is unlikely the Pelicans will fail to guarantee his contract this week.

lopez grabs defensive boards at a worse rate than leonard, with an identical drtg, no thanks

meyers put up a dreb% of 17.1% last year, same as javalle mcgee

robin lopez put up a 13.4%, dead last in the nba among centers who played at least 15 mpg
