While being interviewed after the game he was asked about Girardi telling him not to overdue it on the running hard & they asked him if he could get use to that? his reply was basically, "I don't want to get use to that. That's not the way I play the game & I hope no one watches me do that. It's the way I've always played the game to run 100% every time".

He then went on to say that he does realize that for a week or two he'll have to go a little easier.

It may not have been intentional but I really hope Cano was listening.

The shame is my friend is that Cano is a very talented player. But unless someone pulls him aside he's never going to change. And that's pretty sad.

And now listening to Girardi I'm beginning to realize where Cano is getting it from. He was asked about Jeter's running style & he said (this is a quote) I know it's not his style but for the time being he can't bust it out of the box. Especially (wait for it......) when the ball is hit on the ground & its a sure out".

Maybe, And I'm saying maybe, if he see's more of the way Jeter, Ichiro & Sori hustle, he may follow siut. But I wouldn't bet on it.

The talent is most certainly there with Cano, and if it was all about talent, there would be very little question as to whether the Yankess would go 7 years and $140M+ - they would do it in a heartbeat. But there is also some expectation that if you give a player that type of deal, that player will demonstrate some leadership qualities, seeing that he will be part of the team for a good while longer. On this count - Cano does not seem up to that challenge.

My guess he will pick it up and play harder now that Jeter has returned.
