I'm watching Before They Were Blazers, Gerald Wallace Bama vs. Flordia right now on sportsnet. At 6'7" G-Wall can rebound with anyone. Playing with all out passion, he seems to gain a couple inches, no doubt still to this day, playing 4 in the NBA.

Speaking of passion, fight, and grit, in a shorter 6'8" frame. I'm hearing Kenneth Faried being described with those same words. Going as far as drawing comparisons with the likes of Dennis Rodman and Kevin Love. Many are expecting him to put Kenyon Martin out of a job.

Denver's VP said:
"Kenneth Faried is a great rebounder, and rebounding translates to the NBA. He fell right in our lap."

After replaying the draft over and over in my head, the firing of rich cho and the dumping of some of Portland's fan favorites, the only thing that still really upsets me (even after a nice sunny weekend outdoors) about the draft is the passing on Faried. But maybe I'm ignorant, maybe he's too small for the NBA... All I know is the matra that's been running around in my head, The Blazers must know something I don't.

Obviously only time will tell, but my question remains, did the Blazers truly not see enough potential to draft him at 21? Or did in fact, they have to pass on him in order to trade for Felton? They worked Faried out hard, surely they got to see how he matches up, they must know something I don't about his potential, Right?

The thing that seems to be bothering me, is if we draft Faried... he immediately can fill in for Batum's minutes... and Batum, Miller, and Rudy etc could have gotten us more than Felton IMO

I don't see how Faried fills Batum's minutes or role on the floor. And outside of taking on Jefferson, I don't see what other PG Batum is getting us.

Bam!

Draft night was a disaster. What genius was calling the shots, Paul G. Allen?

From what I heard on the radio, the Nuggets were going to trade the 22nd pick for the 21st pick because they wanted Faried. It was going to be included in the trade but both teams made it easier by the Blazers allowing Faried to go to the Nuggets. So, yes they passed on him but not really.

Faried at the SF instead of Batum.......I would not have liked that at all. Not short term or long term. I guess if you put him in with 4 shooters that would work. Do we have 4 shooters on the team?

The only thing worse than overvaluing your own players is overvaluing someone who has never played a game in the association. He better rebound because he is a horrile shooter.

Farried isn't a 3 he is a pure undersized 4. I agree that we should have tried to package those and get a better player then Felton.
The only reason I can see for us passing on Faried is we have our sights set on a different FA which I can't guess of who.

From everything I've read, Faried is a SF in the same way that Oden and Patty Mills are SFs.

I think a lot get hung up on his 6'7" height -- The guy has a 9'0" standing reach. He's a PF and only a PF.

This makes the most sense to me.

name - barefoot height - weight - wingspan - standing reach

Martell Webster - 6'6 - 230 - 6'11 - 8'10
Kenneth Faried - 6'6 - 225 - 7'0 - 9'0

Passing on Faried means that the Blazers are going to be looking for experience at the backup forward spot. That's the right way to go IMHO if the team wants to get past the 2nd round.

As for Faried freeing us up to trade Batum, I don't see that happening. The Blazers are delusional in their overvaluation of Batum they wouldn't trade him for Dwight Howard.

That was my understanding as well.

sorry I guess I worded that wrong.. I meant more that Faried could take up Batum's minutes which would allow him to be on the floor more. Batum's role is reduced with Wallace here.

How about Wallace takes Faried's minutes and Batum gets MORE PT?

Maybe we didn't take Faried because Wallace is the rich man's Faried?

isn't Batum's role reduction offset by Rudy's exit and Roy's health issues? Wallace may have taken his starting SF spot, but I still see 30 MPG available for him.

So he's nothing special? He's not going to come back to haunt us with a Ronny Turiaf motor or a Corey Maggette like physical presence?

In that case, they did pass on Faried, looking for a PF that is already proven. Hard to put any faith in this front office at this point, but they better get it done and find one! Who knows though, they might have six months to do it before we even play a game...

Maybe. I'd have to look at Rudy's MPG during the exceptionally horrid stretch he was in to finish the season (not the whole season, while it was very sub-par... he still had a really really bad stretch to end it out)

with Roy's minutes, it just depends on how little Nate is willing to play him I guess.

I dont know if I want Wallace taking more minutes. I realize the dude is a warrior... but what I want most from our bench is to minimize the huge dropoff in production when our starters sit. With Faried I feel the production would have dropped off less in the rebounding department, and with a better PG that Batum, Miller, Rudy and picks could have gotten us, I feel the dropoff would have been lessened because the PG would have been out there hopefully longer and the production would have been higher (which I guess making the dropoff more significant? :dunno: ) but you know what I mean there lol

Faried being the "career leading rebounder" or whatever he is really doesn't matter to me because productive top-notch players don't stay in college for 4 years.

Brandon Roy is an exception, as he improved every year at UW (kinda like Nolan Smith at Duke), but Faried's total rebounds in 4 years don't impress me all that much, considering I've never heard of any other front-court player from the OVC who made an NBA impact over the past 4 years.

he might exceed every projection and go on to make a number of All NBA teams. But then again the prevailing speculation here seems he wasn't actually available for Portland to select, so that future haunting possibility rings hollow to me.

I provided Martell's measurements to give the claim that physically KF is all PF some context. Not many players excel inside against guys who are taller/longer and outweigh them by 20-40 pounds

I know that it is doubtful that Freeland will come over since 1)he is making bank, 2) he has a buyout, and 3) He does not want to come over and not have playing time.

But, perhaps the Blazers are trying to show Freeland that he will have playing time if he comes over by not grabbing a PF/C. The truth is, I would rather have Freeland than Faried. Faried is good at one thing, rebounding. Freeland can rebound, score, and defend, all while being nearly 7 feet tall and lengthening our roster.

Most likely I am just reading into the situation something that I want to see, but that's my hope.
