Disaster - Scott Foster for Game 2

My speculative theory is that they don't want to interrupt the flow of the game "unnecessarily". I mean, in the NBA the ref could blow the whistle on every possession if he or she chose to enforce the rules strictly at all times. Any NBA ref who did so would quickly be looking for a new job. NBA refs are exercising a tremendous amount of discretion at all times. If the ref has a string of plays where one team's fans think they repeatedly used that discretionary responsibility poorly, that is when I think those fans get upset. The NBA is entertainment so games are officiated differently than College or High School. It has to be. Echoing again what Dviss said: The worst mistake (IMO) NBA refs make is when they call stuff they didn't see, usually because they weren't in the proper position, or they miss something because they were ball watching. But the not calling every foul at the basket if the ball goes in, yeah that seems like standard operating procedure, depending somewhat on a player's "star" status.

Now that is one helluva fucking great answer!

This is the shit that kinda pisses me off... Especially with y'all that like to claim jinxes exist...

It's like y'all don't know about or don't believe in the Law of Attraction.

Like energy attracts like energy and all I see is negative energy about tonight's officials...

THAT NEGATIVITY CREATES THE JINX!!

Not feeling or speaking positivity...

This whole thread should be locked for that very reason.

I'm taking the thread over now! Fuck this negative bullshit!

The referee are gonna do AWESOME TONIGHT! They're going to make great calls and will be in the correct position to make them!

Think positive!
I never pegged you to move onto some hippie shit.

disaster adverted!

For most of the first half, it really seemed like Foster was trying to have his way.....but Dame.

I have zero doubts that Kanter picks up 2 quick fouls tonight

Yep this happened. I will say this was a very difficult game to officiate and I thought they kept Westbrook in check.

The 3rd quarter was an odd one, the Blazers picked up early fouls and OKC was in the penalty early, while the Blazers never shot one free throw in that quarter due to OKC being in the penalty. Partly because we were shooting lots of 3's and making them, but I thought Adams got away with a lot of shit they did not let Kanter, Meyers, or Collins get away with.

Kanter's last two charges could have gone either way. McHale said he ran over the defender but I hate those calls when the offensive player move sideways to avoid contact and the defender flops. His 4th foul was real close as well as the defender's heal looked to be on the line. Again tough plays to officiate but they could of been costly. And I hate when they call a bunch of fouls in a row on picks just to make a point ....then never call them again.

Y'all are trippin.

Scott Foster called a great game last night.

People gotta stop expecting perfection from human officials.

Kanter's last two charges could have gone either way.

Untrue. They were both Excellent calls and easy calls to make.

You have to understand the rule. I don't think you do.

Also you do call fouls to make a point. You have to make it plain what amount of contact you're going to allow EARLY.

You know why they don't call them again is because players have to adjust to officiating.

What do you know?

100% agree with @dviss1 every one of Kanter's charge calls last night were legit. Easy calls.
He needs to jump stop and take the little bunny hook instead of try to get the layup.
Seems like a pretty simple adjustment to me.

OK explain the rule to me. Take the Kanter play out of the equation. If a defender stops to take a charge and the offensive player is not out of control and is able to move laterally to avoid running the defender over, why is that a charge?

As for the illegal picks, sure they adjust for a little bit, but by the 2nd half they are back to doing them again. Its like offensive holding in football you could call it on almost every play if you wanted to .

Also on Kanter's last charge, if the defender was in the restricted area was it still a charge?

Couple things. I didn't see the restricted line. Step on it and it's blocking no matter what.

Block charge is actually an easy call to make. First the referee must have an open look. This referee is stacked and looking at asses and elbows. Think of our view:

on-ball-defense.jpg

A referee asks themselves 2 questions:

Is the defender legal? (both feet facing the offense while squarely in front. The defense may move to maintain legal guarding position)

Does the offense go TO and THROUGH the defender?

Affirmative answers to both questions = Charging.
Any negative answer = Blocking

I believe both calls were good calls.

Here's the thing: You CAN move... until there is illegal contact.

An illegal screen is a foul so moving or not, there has to be illegal contact. Now the referee also had to determine if the screener is rolling fundamentally or using his roll to gain an advantage.

This call, next to traveling, is the most inconsistent call in the NBA.

Overall I thought the refs were ok, they were letting both teams get away with a lot, but thats the playoffs. I thought PG or Grant(?) had one really obvious charge or travel that or something... That shouldve been called, and of course there were a few calls that couldve gone both ways, but the officials did alright in my opinion.

I guess as a Blazer fan I didn't like the goal-tend call on ML, but overall I thought the refs were alright.

Also and no offense to our refs in here, the game was called well enough that I don't think the officiating should be part of the discussion in this game. Which is a compliment the game shouldn't be about the referees in my opinion and the officials didn't do anything that overshadowed the game.
