DNC Chair: Republicans Believe Illegal Immigration 'Should be a Crime'

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz denounced Republicans last week for believing illegal immigration “should in fact be a crime.” “I think the president was clearly articulating that his position – the Democratic position – is that we need comprehensive immigration reform,” said Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. House member from Florida at a Christian Science Monitor Breakfast on May 26. “We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of our economy and this is not only a reality but a necessity. And that it would be harmful – the Republican solution that I’ve seen in the last three years is that we should just pack them all up and ship them back to their own countries and that in fact it should be a crime and we should arrested them all.” The comment has drawn attention among conservative commentators and bloggers. During the comments, the chairwoman referred to legislation in 2006 by then Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Mich.) that would increase border enforcement and make illegal immigration a criminal offense instead of a civil matter.

However, the Senate bill immunized illegal aliens from being prosecuted for document fraud, a felony, and did not stop the practice of allowing illegal aliens eventually granted legal residency to go back and claim credit with the Social Security Administration for work they did as an illegal. These provisions were in sections 601 and 614 of the McCain-Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform bill.

At the same Christian Science Monitor breakfast, Wasserman Schultz said, “If it were up to the candidates for president on the Republican side, we would be driving foreign cars; they would have let the auto industry in America go down the tubes.”

The Hill newspaper quickly reported that Wasserman Schultz owns a 2010 Infiniti FX35, a Japanese car whose parent company is Nissan. The newspaper cited Florida motor vehicle records.

"Illegal" generally means that something is criminal, so stating that illegal immigrants aren't criminal is, arguably, pretty dumb.

But it's also somewhat circular, right? Who says that an immigrant is committing a crime?

Unlawful and illegal are not always the same, and by painting undocumented immigrants as "illegal" then it's making them into something that they're (most often) not.

I think that undocumented immigration is a big problem, mainly because of the hypocrisy and inefficiencies. An answer MIGHT be to start throwing undocumented/unlawful immigrants in prison... which would mean criminalizing that immigration status in a way that (as I understand it) it is not currently.

I'm always amused with the idea that we can feed, clothe, educate and provide health care for illegal immigrants but somehow it's impossible to deport them. Of course it's possible, it's simply that we lack the political will to do so.

It would really be easy to enforce, just place people at the welfare, food stamp, csd, dmv and schools.

Currently, if you get booked at Washington County jail and are here without proper documents (good distinction Ed), they put a hold on you and transport you to Tacoma to be deported.

Why make it criminal? So that they have to do jail in the US first before deporting them?

What about people here on political asylum but are undocumented, jail for them?

Making them stay in Tacoma is punishment enough.

Um, that's what the GOP position is, silly. The illegals don't have US rights, so they are deported if apprehended. The GOP isn't going to perform sweeps looking for illegals; they merely want to be able to check the citizenship of those apprehended.

Did you actually read the GOP platform? Being in the US illegally is a "crime", but our judicial system shouldn't cover illegal immigrants, so they should be shipped back to their own country.

Yes, jail time takes them out of our society and provides a reason to not return illegally.

If they are undocumented, then they have not been granted political asylum.

Fill out the forms, wait your turn, or rot in prison and then get sent back where you came from for stealing an honest person's place.

It's simple, fair and just.
