Do cops get enough respect?

My dad is a cop. Me and him were talking tonight and it made me think alot about cops and what they do for the world. My dad had somebody sneak up behind him with a shotgun today and he is home now eating and watching TV like nothing happend. If I had a shotgun pulled on me I would still be shaken up. He has been shot at, Stabbed at, ect and he still continues to do his job every night. He gets in a fistfight almost every day at work. How could you go to work and risk being killed every day? I wouldn't do it for any amount of money. Alot of people dont like cops but if they were not around the world would never last.My question is do cops get enough respect for what they do?

I'm in college right now for Criminal Justice and cops don't get all the respect they deserve, it's a much more emotionally damaging job than a physicly dangerous one. I hate it when people complain about police officers, they need to grow up... :thumbdn1:

Nowhere near enough, around here they police cars and police men get stones thrown at them constantly for trying to do their job, but its just the immature people as they throw stones at ambulances and fire engines too.

A shotgun at his head and he is fine, thats Crazy Tony. Anyways, cops need way more respect. If you watch gangs movie and such they potray the cop as a bad person and as a enemy. Cops definantely don't get the respect they deserve. Without cops there would end up being several groups of vigalante's, but ultimately complete chaos.

Well, hmm. I agree that cops don't get enough respect, but that's sorta a loaded question. I think most everyone would say they don't get enough respect, not that it's a bad thing that we agree.It really sucks. Just... everything that cops have to put up with. But at the same time, there's a lot of dick cops out there. It's hard to understand being white and in pretty decent neighborhoods my whole life.

Cops definitely do NOT get the respect that they truly deserve. If it weren't for the cops being out on the streets, there would be total chaos everywhere. Everyone would be living scared. People need to realize that the world wouldn't be what it is today without cops. They need to start showing more respect for those that truly deserve it.

No Offence to you or your dad but I absolutely hate Cops I did one stupid thing where I should have never been charged and I ahd a f*cking gay perol officer for a while then I somehow "know" a guy who got into some drug dealing and I get F*cked over too and they almsot F*cked over my entire life. I don't think police officers get the kind of respect that they deserve to get, especially with both the physical and emotional strain they must endure each and every day, as BCB mentioned. However, there are definitely some crooked cops out there, and some dickheads as well... trust me.

This is not an anarchy world. Get it through your head. Punishment better be given out to stupid asses.They need to save your life in order for you to respect them? They save tens of thousands of lives every day. They work through fear and possible death in order for people to be safe.

Just cuz you did something dumb and got busted by a cop for it doesn't make them dumb. its your dumb asses fault. And you won't respect the police till they save your life. </div>Its not one incident, it happens ALL the time around the world, and profiling(maybe not to that degree) happens even around my daily life. And it's not always a white or black thing, but i've recalled several times where i've had to sit on the ground for 30 minutes while they checked my car just for a TICKET. So no it doesnt just happen one time, if you ever get out into the world, you'll realize how often it does happen. I really dont even want to discuss this, because i'll probably offend a lot of people if i get into it further, but it brings a lot of bad feelings when discussing this. But if you've ever met a cop on duty, they are dicks, whether you are black or white, or have done anything wrong or not.

I think it's those bad cops that hold everyone down. The guys you see hurting people for no reason, acting above the law, going 70 in a 55. It's those guys that make cops look bad, which is bad because it makes us forget about those good cops that actually do their jobs, and take pride in it

Again, most of you are looking at it on paper(they protect and serve the people... and so on... and so on...) But in reality, what drives most people to become police is the power they gain, not all abuse it sterotypically(take bribes,beat black men for no reason,etc.) But they are usually very opinated, and dont treat questioned people like humans. When i was in juvie, i learned a lot. See most people see a person charged with armed robery, and see a bad person, but you cant judge a person. I guess this isnt really relevent entirely, but police treat people like animals. that's why they dont deserve respect, and they espically treat young black youth that way, and it's not an excuse. It's the truth, if you dont believe me, drive around a bad neighborhood and your bound to see something. and it wont be a police shooting and beating someone, it could be as simple as illegally searching their car and making them lay on the pavement. Police do not deserve respect, you have to give respect to get respect, and i'll never respect a person who treats someone differently by looking at their color of skin, or whats written about them on a piece of paper.
