I'm just wondering, does all humour come at someone else's (or at your own) expense?

Does all humour put someone down?

I'm just trying to figure out what is offensive, and what isn't.

If there are examples, what would be a joke that isn't at anyone's expense?

Thanks in advance.

not all humour does, BUT good humour does...at least imo.

you mean the other way around. good humour doesn't come at anybody's expense. i personally believe ridiculing someone on the basis of something they can't change (e.g race, sexual orientation, appearance) is out of bounds.

It may be out of bounds, but to many, it's hilarious.

I don't think all humor comes at another's expense though. It just depends on what humors you.

There is no such thing as "offensive", you're only offended by what you what you find offensive. Nothing offends me at all, I know how to respect other peoples views and opinions unlike some.

That shirt is black...............................................NOT!!!!!

Yeah, because Borat's movie wasn't offensive at all.

That was a good example though.

if you honestly believe nothing offends- you either acutely lack formal education or haven't dealt with many people outside of your peer group.

Its like many people say if you cant take a joke you shouldnt be telling jokes. I know of many pople that will make fun of other people with momma jokes or personal problems, but when the person fires back, they are the first to want to start something

The only things that are offensive are the things people get offended by. There are tolerance levels for every human being. Some people don't get offended, some do.

I know things offend people, I just think those people are stupid and have nothing better to do with their lives than worry about stupid things such as "curse" words or "insulting remarks".

This question is kind of strange in that EVERYTHING can be related back to "someone".

For example, if I'm laughing at a sign that seems unintentionally funny to me (like say...a restaurant called Fuk Juu - which I think exists in Vancouver), but the restaurant is named after combining two people's last name, it's at someone's expense but it's not really THEM I'm laughing at right?

So I think unless we're laughing at like scientific facts or WORDS or things of that nature, we are technically laughing at another's expense, although it may not be in a way that's insulting to them.

Self-deprecating humor doesn't have to hurt one's own feelings. The ability to laugh at oneself is such a good quality, anyway.

Though all humor in the Magic forum comes at the expense of Swish.

you think, so essentially its your opinion. and as previously stated- your opinion is nothing worthwhile for the previously stated reasons. in other words- people like you, should keep their opinions to themselves.

Excuse me?

I do believe he has the freedom to express himself. It's his right to express his opinions, you sure do it a lot. Please, if you don't like his opinions, ignore them.

difference- i rarely express my opinion, i merely articulate ideas by others and connect the dots in the process. an opinion is not hinged on fact, e.g. what ntc said earlier in this thread.

Listen here Ghandi, I dont know what the hell your problem with me is, but why dont you give it a rest, alright?

deception, your posts have nothing to do with the topic. All you have said is that NTC has no right to an opinion because you *think* that NTC is either uneducated or "haven't dealt with many people outside of his peer group". You are certainly not articulating any ideas, and you're not backing your statements up. Shouldn't you, as a (self-proclaimed) educated person lead by example do those things?

ghandi is one cool guy but you state opinion above fact.

a contradiction? well true on many occasions but you have to read ntc's other posts for a better perspective. and as far as the peer group- i was referring to australia's notorious "white only" approach to immigration until 1973. furthermore, the state of australia has coerced the exclusion of "other" groups like the aboriginals historically.

Why would you even speak about him not having much formal education? Is that any of your business to talk about over the boards? Don't you have any respect?

Thanks for saying that. It was definitely inappropriate, especially for an abstract question such as the one the thread proposed-- which formal education would not help answer.

That is a complex situation of whether it would be at the owners' expense or at the coincidental alignment of two Chinese last names that sound similar to English words.

Yea, making fun of yourself definitely doesn't hurt others. I wasn't thinking of that when I made the thread.

If the joke coach saw the movie, he probably felt bad after seeing how he was embarrassed in front of millions of people. Maybe not though, being a joke coach he might have appreciated it?

What is meant by "offensive" humor? Just because a joke is crass or uses dirty words, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I tend not to like jokes that are meant to embarass a person or group of people, unless they really deserve it.

NTC is right. No joke is intrinsically offensive. If people are sensitive enough, almost anything could be offensive. Most really good jokes will probably offend someone for some reason or other.

Well I mean thats right, essentially, anyone could be offended by anything, thats why I find it so stupid.

We all need to learn to accept the views and opinions of others, realize that while you may not find somthing amusing, some one else might.

respect is certainly earned.

do you even know what an abstract question is? btw, a formal education gives you perspective as well as harness intelligence.
