OT Dogs round 2 - what to get?

I don’t want to ruin the other dog thread but want opinions. Ms. Further and I are talking bout get a dog when we move in a few months (can’t have dogs in my rental).

I’ve had labs, Golden’s and mutts. Ms. Further has had terriers, mutts and other smaller dogs.

I love big dogs but life for me right now requires living in a small house. (Little 1100 sq/ft rental I’m considering is 3100/mo. And that’s dirt cheap around me.

Anyways, I’ll take all thoughts about what dog to get.

I’m not really interested in puppies so I’m likely going to try and find an adult rescue. That might end up limiting the breed, but it might not. There are so many pounds around me, tons of options.

Find an older female Chihuahua that will let you pick it up and hold it out facing you. The ones that go crazy are still cool dogs but harder to live with.

The ones that will let you hold them like that are perfect dogs.

American pit bull terrier from the pound or adult rescue. My most loyal, loving dog was a pit bull. But that's my biased personal opinion, buddy.

Get a hamster. They're happy endlessly running on a wheel going nowhere and you can put them in your shirt pocket and they are happy.

We have dogs for quite some time as it started out with a small sheperd/ Husky mix that was around 50 lbs but she then became sick and then we inherited a female Yorkie from my sister that was a fantastic dog but unfortunately was attacked by a raccoon and passed away. My dad then purchased a miniature Schnauzer for us and he was a fantastic dog that loved everyone. During the same time we had the Schnauzer we also acquired a Chihuaha that looked like a miniature Rotweiller but was also a great dog. Soon after that we also acquired a small Pomeranian/Chihuaha mix and then another small dog that was a Shorkie (2/3 Yorkie and 1/3 Shi Tzu). Having 4 at one time was a bit overwhelming but then we had to put the Schnauzer down due to an illness and my youngest daughter moved out and took the first chihuaha with her so we are down. Bottom line is we have had several small dogs and have enjoyed them all as they make great companions. If a small dog isn't to your liking then border collies are fantastic dogs, but need lots of excercise. They are often around 40 lbs which isn't real big.

lol. when my kids were younger we let them each get a hamster along with all the toys and wheels. Well, 3 soon led to several and we were overwhelmed with hamsters everywhere. I think we had 14 at one time. They were a blast to watch but man they multiply quickly.

Get a cat.

I basically agree that all dog breeds have some great dogs. small or large, dogs are just awesome. I'm thinking about a medium small dog, 25-40lbs range. but once I finally go to the humane societies, no matter what I plan I'm sure Ill end up just falling for random doge that isn't what I planned on. Either way, great.

As far as border collie, great dogs but both those and Australian Shepherds, although so of my favorites, require too much time/exercise. I work a full time job, a part time job, and next month begin graduate school. My wife has a full plate too.

I have a horse also, and although at this moment we board the horse, I'm hoping to get a few acres at some point so the horse can be at the house. Any dog needs to be good with other animals and although I love pits, they do often show animal aggression.

Honestly, when you're ready to get one then go out to the shelters and look, for me it's always been it doesn't really matter what I think I want, you and your wife will go and see a dog and it will just click. It will be the right dog for you.

You'll know it when you see it and they will love you for it.

I've tried some of the more popular single malts and didn't like them. I prefer a blended Chivas or Haig and Haig dimple Pinch, which is my very favorite.

I’m not a big single malt fan either. Especially the super peaty ones. I like the smell for a moment but it becomes too overpowering. There are plenty of other booze options I prefer.

The peatier the better, if you ask me. And the best part is, it's rare that somebody else drinks all your booze.

I've got a buddy I used to work at Tektronix with, who drinks nothing but single malt and lots of it. We're going to hunt you down and he'll drink your booze. Me? I'm the designated driver.

Goldendoodle or Labradoodle.

They are the best. Friendly, smart, non-shedding, super smart, affectionate, low maintenance.

We spent a lot of time finding the right breeder breeding the right size. Our Goldendoodle is about 50 lbs. A good medium sized dog. Some get quite large. When we take her to doggie daycare, she is everyone's favorite. Her favorite thing is to be near us, but not necessarily on top of us, cozying up.

Little dogs ready do tend to be yappy. Big dogs are expensive and challenging.

And I disagree about rescues. Not all are grateful. Many have been abused and are damaged. Be careful.
