Portland needs anther big, obviously, but has a stocked roster. The inevitable waiving/releasing of Patty Mills only brings us down to 15, the max limit. So somebody else has to go. One solution being batted around is to waive Pendergraph, because he's one player who's obviously not tradeable, and who won't give us anything this season. Win/win, huh?

But that would be so monumentally shitty, it would make the franchise hard to respect. The only way this would be remotely conscionable would be if
(a) Pendergraph's contract is fully guaranteed, so he'd get paid anyway.
(b) He would still be allowed to rehab with the team (something I imagine the NBA would frown on), and
(c) the team promised to re-sign him next season.

Otherwise, I say don't do it! Apart from anything, to treat a guy who's been one of our best soldiers, nicest guys and most-liked-by-his teammates players that way would send a terrible message to other players.

Roy, obviously. He's expendable now that his knees are completely shot and about to fall off and we've got Matthews.

barfo

I normally don't do the "fixed" thing, but I thought I'd add in for all the Armchair Orthopedic Surgeons (tm) out there.

Roster exemption.

Ed O.

Pendy isn't good enough to hold a spot for him though (if we don't get the exemption).

Oh yeah...

What were the specific circumstances to allow that again?

"Hardship".

I don't know what that means, exactly, though, and I'm not sure that having three seriously injured players (as opposed to four) would get us one...

Ed O.

It would be nice to get a roster exemption. And we might. But with Joel and Greg actually practicing, that might be hard to argue for. Of course, if they're practicing, we could just hold out until they can play.

Another reason why it would be hard to justify a roster exemption: we have PLENTY of healthy players. It's not the League's fault that they're all 6'8" or shorter. They could just tell us tough shit, make a trade.

Who's going to volunteer for an ingrown toenail?

dude those are a bitch. Since 8th grade I have had my right one removed twice, and my left big toe nail 3 times. Watch a youtube clip of a removal :sigh:

At this point I think Cho might actually be able to justify trading Rudy for table scraps to Paul Allen (who's reportedly the one who put the kibosh on the Chicago deal) given their current situation.

Ideally, Cho would be able to package Mills and Rudy and maybe somebody else and actually acquire a decent backup 4 instead of just clearing a spot. Maybe the solution is to trade Rudy and Mills for a pick and then see if Joel Freeland is maybe feeling like he's ready to take the plunge ... of course who knows what his overseas contract is like and I can't remember for sure if he's released from the rookie wage scale.

I really like pendergraph I hope we don't waive him but I can see the reasons why we would. He isn't the best player but he is fun to watch at certain times and he is a very good locker room guy to have.

I'm against trading Rudy, mainly because right now he's our best player. I think he's really clicked with the second unit, partly because the addition of Wesley has made the ball move much more. (And if we got Oberto, they could chat in Spanish, and Rudy would realize that really he LOVES it here....)

He's our best player? He hasn't made a 2 point field goal or attempted a free throw. Just because he happens to be hot from three right now does not mean he is our best player.

To state the obvious, Cho doesn't need to waive anybody to bring another player to the rest of training camp...he just needs to be down to 15 before the start of the season. Any thoughts on guys he could invite who would show up without a guaranteed contract?

If Rudy maintains his desire to be released from his contract, he effectively becomes another guy with an ending contract that Cho may be able to package for an asset some time this season. It seems like those kinds of deals net you the most near the deadline.

Nobody you'd want to count on probably. I guess guys like Greg Stiesma, Dwayne Jones, et al. that were D-League call-ups would be about the best you could hope for as a non-guaranteed band-aid.

Rudy vs. the Clippers: 23 minutes, +18, 5/6 3s, 5 rbs, 3 assists, 2 steals.

Rudy vs. the Jazz: 27 minutes, +17, 4/6 3s, 1/4 2s, 1/2 fts, 4 assists, 4 steals

No "PER" available yet, but as the original link I gave shows, he leads the team in "EFF".

Note, I didn't say he WAS our best player (well, I guess I said "right now he was, but what I meant was) he has BEEN our best player. Given Wesley's -8 against Utah, I stand by that.

True, but Rudy is only making $1.3 million. Most big deals wouldn't need that "expiring" contract in order to complete.

If Pendy needs to be cut, then so be it. I like the guy, but he is not a good player. If he can sit on the end of the bench, then fine, he doesn't complain, and works his ass off. But if he can't even play, then his spot needs to be filled. He most likely would not be a Blazer next year, and especially the year after if there is a strike. He gets paid for the full season, and at that point he can try and make a roster somewhere in the NBA.

I would prefer keeping him if we can find a good trade for Rudy, but if not, bye bye Pendy.

Add it to Joel's or Miller's ending contract, multiply by 1.25 and suddenly you're up to a significant contract that some team may be looking to cut. Just saying that his contract's still worth something to the team.

Maybe Rudy will play up his value and we could trade him for a big.
