If your going to get rid of Marcus, and bring in another back up shouldn't that new back up be better than the old back up. I want a backup to replace Marcus only if they are better , and are capible of playing starting minutes whenever the nets need him. Dooling is average at best.

no thank you

also: Marcus has mush more upside than Dooling. I think we've seen all we going to see from Dooling.</div>

Dude, Marcus can't defend my grandma. Dooling is one of the best perimeter defenders on the market. As stated on the 1st page, stats aren't everything. Marcus got his stats in (mostly) garbage minutes or against the opposing team's bench, while Dooling got his playing a key role for the Magic.

Obviously Dooling isn't going to get much better, but the fact that Marcus has potential that he has yet to prove he can fulfill shouldn't stop us from signing a very solid player.
</div>
Exactly. We don't need a back-up pg with upside. We need one that can fill a role. Dooling can do these three things: give Harris a breather, come in as a defensive specialist and come in as an extra shooter. He can also fill in for an extended time if Harris gets hurt.

We have 25 year old Devin Harris. We don't need a replacement.
</div>
Why do we need to fill a backup PG role on a team that is not a contender? I'd rather take a gamble.

key word, bench.
</div>
Did you think they were going to get a starter for about $3mm a season? They have Harris. A back-up is all they need.
</div>

No, point was Dooling isn't going to start so Nets shouldn't throw him starter money. He would start on the Heat and on other teams so it wouldn't make sense for the Nets to outbid the teams that will be trying to pay him like a starter. If we can get him for cheap then I'm all for it, but if not, signing a vet for the minimum would be the best option.
</div>
The Nets don't have starter money to throw at him, so I don't think that's an issue. Neither does Miami nor Orlando. $2-3mm per season is not starters money.
</div>

I didn't say it was. That's why I said "other teams." Do you really think the Heat and the Nets are the only teams interested in the best combo guard on the market?

seems like dooling isn't a realistic option, rush is becoming more of a possibility. Hes never seen a shot he didn't like

Assuming the market includes RFAs, then I'm sure more than just the Heat and Nets are interested in Ben Gordon.

if dooling doesn't accept the nets' $2.5M/yr offer we can always turn around and offer more money to jeff mcinnis!

I think the Nets should call it a day on signings. Marcus is the backup for now, pick up a vet min to round out the roster, by the trade deadline, who knows teams may want to dump contracts to avoid the lux tax, Nets should keep some space open for possible trades, an expiring deal, 2nd round pick, a 2 year deal, a 1st round pick....no 3 year deals.

Every spot on the roster has good depth:
PG Harris-Williams-(VC)
SG VC-CDR-Ager-Hassell
SF Simmons-Hayes--Najera
PF Williams-Yi-Swift-Anderson
C Lopez-Boone

That's 15, move Ager if it allows you to take on an additional pick/picks. This is basically a 2 year project.

Harris/Williams
Carter/Douglas-Roberts/Ager
Simmons/Hayes/Hassell
Boone/Jianlian/Najera/Williams/Anderson/Swift
Krstic assuming he's kept/Lopez

That team probably isn't capable of winning more than 30 games, but that's a nice young bench and it will be interesting to see how this team develops.

Another lottery pick added to the mix, what for summer 2010, there's just 4, VC, SWAT, Najera and Harris, probably assume Yi, Brook, Ryan Anderson. About 42 millon, leaves 17 million assuming the 59 million cap. Not much room if somehow the Nets win the lottery for Lebron. Starting to not like the Najera signing.

ben gordon would be a great pick up... but at what price? i kno the bulls would rather keep kurt and deng... then trade kurt and resign ben and deng... that being said... if harris and ben would start at the 1 and 2... with vc being at the 3...

we would hurt defensively cuz bigger 1's or bigger 2's would dominate harris and ben...

now there is a player i wouldn't mind the nets going after in Kurt.

"Yes! My educated opinion is that Kurt is great!"

My point was that you don't have to worry about the Nets overpaying and giving him starters money if they don't have the salary flexibility to do it.
