So, consensus picks from the room are Anunoby at 16, Giles at 20, and Ojeleye at 26?
Not me. I still want to trade up to get Ferguson or take him with our pick of everyone is sleeping on him

I've only made a few 'making a case' draft threads since 2013:

*Meyers Leonard
*CJ McCollum/Rudy Gobert/Nikola Jokic
*Kristaps Porzingis/Myles Turner/Willy Hernangomez
*Harry Giles/John Collins/Robert Williams

Obviously I was stoned when I made the pre-draft case for Meyers.

Giles is the biggest boom or bust prospect in years IMO. He'd be the consensus #1 pick this year if it weren't for his injury history. That is a big concern though - do you take him over much safer picks like J. Collins or Anunoby?
Still think Fultz, Jackson and Tatum would be ahead of him. I know he was never 100% this year, but even during his HS days I thought his talent was overrated, especially on the offensive end. Certainly not on Bosh's level.

I'd still be fine with him with the Cle pick though.

He will walk in the footsteps of Oden.

6'11" | 7'3" wingspan | 9'1" reach | 240 lbs | 19 years old
Knee history: Torn ACL | Partially torn ACL | Meniscus
Skill set: Legit inside/outside game - similar to Chris Bosh (ceiling)
Projection: Late lotto | Mid-First

His injuries have slowed him down, as seen by his numbers at Duke, but he is an elite level talent. IMO, especially with Williams staying at Texas A&M, you take this chance and even trade up if you have to.

Looks like a pretty good prospect. I'm getting sour on the idea of getting a "stretch 4". I know Stotts seems to love that for his system, but this team really needs guys that can play inside.

I didn't like him in One Direction, and I wouldn't like him on the Blazers. Slow white British players under 6' tall are not the players we need to take the next step. Ask Lavar Ball how he feels about white kids with slow foot speed. Plus he's already 23. Is he too old to improve?

"Giles is a wildcard for the draft as he came back in late December and struggled to show much explosiveness off his surgically repaired knee(s). Giles was once seen as a potential No. 1 pick, but concerns about his knees have his stock falling. He’s no longer considered a likely lottery pick after struggling mightily in limited minutes at Duke. His inability to play physical and get any lift after contact is a major concern."

What is cooling my interest is there are rumors that he had a fourth surgery that he's keeping under wraps. That's four surgeries before his 19th birthday.

IMO he's still worth the risk - with the MEM/CLE pick - but he's definitely a walking red-flag.

His knees look like a GREAT FIT for our team!

we should draft 3 high ceiling guys. we need to luck into an all star in the draft to have any chance to contend in the next 5 years.

i love that SMU kid ojeleye. dude can ball, but makes me wonder why coach k didnt play him at all.

im gonna take a stab at the pronunciation, ive never heard it.

oh-ya-leh-jay? with the jay almost like zhay?

No on Giles.
Yeah, even if you forget the injury issues, I'm not sure what other than rebounding he'll do at an above average level.

He's always been a stiff, turnover prone offensive player with %'s than indicate he should be lower usg% finisher offensively. People see this guy that can handle the ball in his HS mixtapes but the level of competition he played was pretty low.

IQ and movement defensively makes me question whether he'll be ready to contribute on that end either for at least the first couple years. Very foul prone and completely lost in pnr.

"Teams are waiting with a lot of anticipation for Harry Giles' medical reports to come back. I talked to a number of NBA executives who said if he's totally cleared by their medical staff, he could move in the Nos. 5-10 range of the draft.

"He's the best prospect in the entire draft if he can fully recover and stay healthy," one NBA executive said. "He's just a freaky talent." /Insider

Yeah if a team want's to take a risk on Harry and push Collins further down the board...be my guest.

I'd take a shot on Giles with a later pick, like Cleveland's. At that point in the draft, the expected return is so low, I think it's worth taking a shot on upside as opposed to someone who might grade out with a slightly better median projection but a much lower ceiling even if he pans out.

Giles is getting a lot of flak for his combine athletic test.

Some perspective -- LaMarcus Alridge Vs. Harry Giles:

LA: 6'11.25" | 9'2" reach | 26.5" no-step | 34" max vert
Giles: 6'10.5" | 9'1.5" reach | 27" no-step | 32.5" max vert

If he's there at 20/26 you have to strongly consider him IMO.

Giles is the definition of big time risk - high reward.

Neil still has to come out of this draft with Jordan Bell though!

One thing I should mention about the LA/HG comparison - one is still not fully 100% back from injury. Even though he has yet to regain his explosiveness he's still on par with Aldridge. There is a strong chance that Giles will never regain his explosiveness - he's still a solid athlete, not the freak he once was though.

Giles' athleticism shouldn't be a deal breaker. His physical will be the deal breaker if he's red-flagged.

27 inch vertical at the combine...

I don't think comparing Giles to Aldridge is all that comforting. Giles is intriguing because of his insane athleticism, not because he's terribly skilled. Aldridge was light years ahead of him in terms of offensive skills in college. You have to love his tools and athletic upside and believe that the skills will develop. It's kind of a problem if his prospect star depends on being a freakish athlete and currently his explosiveness has been sapped with no guarantee that he gets it back to previous levels.

His knees are "100% healthy" according to ....Harry Giles.

The Blazers (amd every other team he has worked out for) had team doctors examine his knees fwiw.

I think all teams he work out for has exam knees and so far I haven't heard nothing negative about them so that is good. I think he only working out for the kings Detroit Chicago Indiana Miami and us. Kings not going draft him I don't think Detroit or Chicago so I believe Miami will different direction. So we taking at 15 if not there indiana if he gets by there we can select him at 20. I got for us at 20.

He said he was completely healthy, then said he was still rehabbing and getting stronger.

So which is it?

Good; I hope he moves into the top 10. Blazers cannot afford this risk.
