Drawing information from databases.

Does anyone have any real experience in drawing data from databases, and using that in a flash program?

I want to make a better version of the ESPN trade machine that can take into account sign and tades, delayed trades, and that is also searchable for expiring contracts and non-guaranteed contracts. Basically the ESPN Trade Machine on steroids.

I've never had any experience with taking information from a database and then having it used on a webpage or by an application. Does anyone know of some good sites or books to give me a start in this?
