OT Durant declines $31.5 M player option

He is still getting a minimum of 31.5 million to rehab next year, but by declining this next year he now get a longer contract with more money and more opt out clauses. Either way he is getting paid. But now someone will be on the hook for more than just next year.

How bout both?

His agent knows who's sending a deal.
Exactly! This is no surprise. He is getting a max anywhere he wants to go (Warriors, Knicks, or Nets), so it would make the least sense for him to pick up this option.

All these guys declining their player option obviously have a long term deal in the works that is better financially/provides security. The players know the offers already! That's what their agents have been doing all season.

Warriors will offer him the super super super max.

Wonder if the Warriors can still get the disabled player exception on a new contract?

if you make $60,000 a year, it would take you 525 years to make the 31.5M Durant just opted out of

Turner made nearly 52M for his three years in Portland. At 60K a year, it would take you over 850 years to make what Turner did as a Blazer

in either event, if you saved your sick leave, you'd have a lot of it

A good sign pointing towards him leaving.

No, technically they could apply but the NBA isn't going to grant them one for signing an injured player. Besides Durant is probably going to miss the year but it's possible he could still be back so a doctor isn't going to approve it. As discussed before the disabled player exception isn't enough to really make a difference in this situation anyway. It would be about $9 million.

A long term back end deal so the Warriors have space this year?

I don't get it. I would not sign someone who just ruptured his Achilles to max contract at this point. I have never seen a player return from that injury without significant degradation of their game.
