$14 million LOL....

You have to be at least competitive. He's making 22 million this year, maybe you offer something close to that, but there's no way he's gonna take any less.

Dwight is not worth $22 million to the Blazers. We pay him what he is worth to our team, not based on what he made last year. Plus he is on the downhill side of his career and will become less productive each season, not more productive.

If Dwight wants more than he is worth, let another team overpay him and hurt their cap space. We want players that want to help us win.

Miami can offer Whiteside more than any other team. Yes, they have to renounce all their free agents but they can offer 7.5% raises as opposed to 4.5% raises. Not saying they will, but technically they can, and he is obviously their most important free agent.

They also don't have to renounce Wade if they can make him take a *wink* *wink* sort of deal where he signs a contract less than his caphold before they resign Whiteside.

Depends on the discount Wade takes, because Whiteside sure as hell isn't doing it.
Exactly, that's my point. They have to renounce everyone (because there's no point in NOT renouncing Wade if they're going to sign him for less than his cap-hold). Sure it's possible, but is Whiteside the kind of transcendent talent that Pat Riley will see as worthy of that drastic of a move to retain? Personally I doubt it.

Anybody seriously interested in Whiteside should read this article:

The Heat are not as dead in the water with the Whiteside/Wade situation as it looks on the surface. All it takes is some organization foresight and good planning and they can deal with the situation just fine. You can argue that Whiteside isn't worth the max (and he probably isn't), but losing him for nothing would be potentially disastrous for a team lacking young star power. The Heat are not winning a championship next year regardless of what happens, so planning for the year after should be their ideal situation. Miami has consistently been one of the best run organizations in the league, so don't expect them to just do the obvious.

No income tax in Florida though, so technically he'd make more if he stayed.

Even factoring in the 7.5% raises he can get from Miami, and eliminating the Oregon State income tax that would be assessed on only half of his games, Miami would still have to start him at over 21M to surpass what he would receive from the Blazers starting at 23M.

The original point still stands--Miami has to renounce every free agent in order to retain Whiteside, and it doesn't seem likely.

This is why I am uneasy about offering him the max to get him. Riley is pretty bright and knows Whiteside better than any GM in the league. If he does not make a strong effort to retain him, what does that tell us? I will be anxious to see what he does. Best case scenario is he trys to keep Whiteside, but Whiteside wants to get out of Miami.

Interesting--50/3 for Wade actually fits nicely into the window that would allow them to keep Whiteside. And I see that I did forget about the possibility of a waive/stretch of McBob. That could open up a bit more room. That's probably their best bet if they want to stay competitive.

The only important free agent is Wade. What they do with Wade will dictate how they handle Whiteside. Personally, I wouldn't feel good betting against Pat Riley and Wade. Stranger things have happened, but we're not dealing with the Minnesota Timberwolves here.

There's a difference, however, between gutting the remainder of your team to keep a guy (as Miami would have to) and bringing in a free agent while retaining almost everyone else on the roster (as Portland would).

Isnt mcroberts making like 5.7 million? Id have to think it wouldnt be that difficult for someone to dump him because in the new cap that seems perfectly reasonable for a bench big.

They still would have winslow, bosh, wade, dragic..... im.not seeing it as a huge issue. If wade and bosh can play, which is a big if, they have more talent than us and are in an easier conference.

They're still gonna lose someone. I'd go after Deng in a heartbeat. He and Aminu would make a sick 3-4 duo.

Every time I watched Deng this year he had a bad game. I know he some great games too, but never when I watched him. He was 0-12 from deep against Toronto in their series. Although I guess he played injured.

Next year will be his 13th season. Lot of mileage. I doubt he will go to a young team.

Agreed. Deng (for what he is going to make and his age) isn't enough of an upgrade over Aminu or Harkless.

I selected the last option, but my definition of "cheap" is 20-25 mil for 2-3 yrs guaranteed, 4th year team option.
My definition of cheap is 12-15 million a year, which I know is not going to happen.

One of your links also says this though... So who should I believe a Doctor? or a Basketball player.

UPDATE: While it’s still clear there has been some cartilage loss in Dwight’s knee, Dr. Walter Lowe did provide that optimism, speaking with local Fox’s Mark Berman to provide some context on why they went forward with the procedure.

It’s a biologically active injection that helps almost everything heal in the knee. We took some bone marrow out of his pelvis. It gives us some young, very strong platelets with a lot of healing factors. I think his prognosis is great. This is something we did today to try to hasten the recovery time. It’s really a shot. It’s not a surgical procedure. It’s a 20 minute deal. I don’t think it’s a big deal. We want to do everything we can to give Dwight the best chance of being back as fast as he can be back. The other side of that is we want him to feel like Dwight and be one hundred percent when he comes back. This sort of mixes those two things together. I think he would get well even without this today. We’re really treating this like a bone bruise. There is nothing structurally wrong with his knee. That soreness is what we’re trying to get rid of. So we’re really basically treating a bone bruise. The time frame for these bone bruises to heal is in that 4-6 week timeframe. The most important thing for Dwight is his pain (to be) gone. That’s more important than what the MRI is going to show me in four weeks. As long as we’re seeing a combination of bone bruise gone away (and) symptoms being better, then that’s when we’ll start the transition back to the court. What makes this heal is essentially rest. I would certainly expect him before the playoffs. I hope we have quite a few games before the playoffs. I really expect him to recover and play again this season.”
What would it cost for me to have this done? :) My knees are killing me.

I think they do want to keep him; in fact i think they are behind most of the stories/rumors about his character and coachability; they are trying to keep his value down.

Interesting conspiracy theory. Very risky though. If he ever found out it was them behind the rumors, he would leave for sure. Maybe we should start the rumor that Miami is behind it...

Ok, I've been lurking here for quite a while but after reading this post I had to create an account just to quote it and say that YOU WIN THE INTARWEBS! BBert you made my freaking day.
Thanks! :)

Since Miami doesn't have his Bird rights, they can only offer him 4.5% raises.
*Edit - Correction: they have his Early-Bird rights - so they can offer him 7.5% raises. (However the early-bird exception only allows them to pay him up to $1.7M if they go over the cap to sign him.)

Here's a look at Miami's cap situation:
Signed/Guaranteed:
- C Bosh, $23,741,060
- G Dragic, $15,891,725
- J McRoberts, $5,782,450
- J Winslow, $2,593,440
** $48M Guaranteed

Assuming the CAP is at $92M, that gives them $44M of CAP space.

Here are their CAP holds:
- D Wade, $30,000,000
- L Deng, $13,197,096

Everyone else is non-guaranteed, or minimum salary.

A team must have a minimum 12 man roster, filled out on minimum contracts, so if they only keep the 6 players noted above, there's a $3M CAP hit to reserve the minimum roster spots.

Since Whiteside is only a 4 year vet, his max salary will be about $21.5M.

$44M - $3M - $21.5M = $19.5M

Essentially, to be able to keep Whiteside, Miami would have to let everyone go on their roster with non-guaranteed salaries, including L Deng, and get Wade to sign for $19.5M or less.

Highly unlikely.

I wouldn't consider DeRozan. The others, sure - even though Barnes is mightily overrated.
Alright, I think I have to add Barnes to my "don't even consider" list alongside DeRozan. I just honestly don't get what all the fuss is about - he's SO MUCH WORSE than "Bad Nic" was.

ESPN: What specifically are you referring to?
Howard: "I felt like my role was being reduced. I went to [Rockets general manager] Daryl [Morey] and said, 'I want to be more involved.' Daryl said, 'No, we don't want you to be.' My response was, 'Why not? Why am I here?' It was shocking to me that it came from him instead of our coach. So I said to him, 'No disrespect to what you do, but you've never played the game. I've been in this game a long time. I know what it takes to be effective.'''
Morey declined comment.

Does this change anyone's opinion?

Not really. When youre in an everyone for themselves environment its easy to feel the same way. Plus morey is an idiot.
Dwight would be signing with us knowing about dames leadership. Harden didnt have that, neither did kobe. They both are me first players. Dame would let howard have whatever spotlight he wanted, and is intelligent enough to know that he would need to get dwight to buy in.

Dame and dwight seem to be very friendly when around each other. So if we sign him, dame and olshey have vetted him properly and approve. Thats way more important to me than a bunch of forum geeks that are gonna shit themselves.

The article starts off by calling him "The 32 year old center." Howard is 30. Not good fact checking for the opening line.

Howard seems well spoken and sincere. Yes, there are some red flags, but this might be the perfect 'buy low' scenario. He sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. Sounds a lot like the rest of our roster that out performed this past year. He could blend right in with that mind set.

Also. So he went to Morey, but came out of it saying the comment shouldn't come from Morey, but the coach?

Huh? So why'd you go to Morey then?

TBH, the article makes me want him less. He comes off as a diva kinda mentally fragile. We just got rid of a similarly fragile dude last year and have another one waiting in the ranks in Meyers.

Don't need to add to that.

Dwight does come out kind of whiny in that interview, but I think he could thrive in our team culture.
