I found this funny that happened on Xmas.
Howard clearly violated the rule — while we don't see exactly when the ball is "placed at [his] disposal," he definitely has it at the 10-second mark of the clip. The whistle is blown at 0:25, a full 15 seconds later, and Dwight's not even in his shooting motion yet. So while the play's super rare and it was kind of a stunner to see it called, the officials were totally in the right when they blew the play dead.

The Mailman broke that rule over 10,000 times!

maybe the ref had some money on the line?

What a BS call by Delaney.

BS how? Because you don't like the rule? If it's in the rule book and it's violated, it should be called. If the league doesn't like it, then they'll change it. But as long as it's there, it should be enforced.

Personally, I like it. Keep things moving. If he wants a bunch more time, let him call a timeout. In fact, maybe that's what they should change it too. Instead of a lane violation maybe they should just charge a timeout. That'd be even more punitive.

Yeah, I like that even better.

I do too, but even better would be to have one of the refs get to kick him in the balls if he takes too long. That would lend a certain excitement to shooting free throws, and would be a lot of fun for the crowd.

Actually, I really do agree with you. Free throws take too long as it is, anything done to speed them up is a good thing.

Maybe the throws shouldn't be free. The players could just buy them off the refs.

I'm late to this party, but I think that it should be CONSISTENTLY enforced. If Howard wants to complain that they only call it on him sometimes... that's lame. If he can point to other players that violate the rule that don't have it called against them? That's something else.

There's no excuse for a player taking more than 10 seconds and expecting to get away with it.

The cool thing about that is that you can actually make the case. There's no interpretation here like there is for a foul. All you have to do is study game film and time the action.

The ref could do the counting thing with his arm like youth refs do for back court violations.

They could have a giant ball suspended from the roof which drops at 10 seconds and winds up between the foul shooter and the basket.
It could be a disco ball.
It would be so cool.

Make it a guillotine blade and you get the crowd involved.

Just to inform posterity, he thought of his imagery because of the new year 40 minutes ago.
