Dyslexia

Does anyone know anything about dyslexia? Can it become apparent later in life (say, college)? I've always been a good reader and a good writer, although my hand writing is horrible, but lately I've been having some issues. It started in September. I'd write a word and mix up the letters. Maybe instead of saying the I'd write "eht" or something like that. Whenever I took notes, I'd mess up a little like that every once in awhile.

This semester its gotten worse. I'm combining words, and spelling them in the wrong order. I can read just fine, but hand writing is difficult sometimes. I got so frustrated on Friday that I sorta freaked out. I tried to write the words "This psychologist" and came up with "thpsychois". Instead of realizing my mistake that I quit spelling the word "this", my brain just made me write it in the middle of the word "psychologist".

So, anyone know anything about dyslexia?

Does you school have a Teaching and Learning Center that provides disability assessment and services? I'd get there pretty fast if I was you. They'd be best to help you out and determine what the deal is. That's probably where you'd have to go for any sort of testing or other accommodations you'd need for assistance.

Do this. Counselors have tons of experience with this kind of stuff, and you can get someone to give you a copy of their notes. Whether it's someone who types their notes or using that paper that makes a copy underneath it. That is if you feel like having someone else's notes would be better for you.

I don't think it is a condition that comes later in life... and I believe that you would have trouble with both reading and writing if you had it, but if you have concerns see you Dr.

I notice at times I mix things up horribly in Email at work... but it comes from my typing lagging behind what is in my head... basically multitasking too much... not enough sleep... something like that.

No I'm not on any drugs of any sort. The only thing that I come back to is the fact that when I was 10 I was hit and then ran over by a car. I cracked the windshield with my head, and half of my face was black from bruising. I've never really showed any brain problems since then: I can't see perfect out of one eye now and if I get really excited I speak complete gibberish instead of real sentences.

I think I'll go and get it checked out here at school.

I've kinda noticed the same thing.. I wonder.. maybe is it becoming more apparent now that you are having to write words down more than ever before? Not saying thats the case with you.. but the last couple years I've noticed as a welfare worker I deal with Social Security #'s and Phone #'s and Income calculations a lot, so I deal with numbers more than ever before. I noticed a couple years ago (I think it would have made me 22 lol) I start writing the middle of a word, or a # sometimes... i.e. if a phone number is 503..... I would start with the 0 and have to go back and put the 5 in front of it. Same with names. And I never had that problem before. I too am interested in this lol.

This too. It might be worth it to check in with the Health Center on campus as well, or ask the academic folks about it.

hoojacks is 100% correct. The sooner the better. You could have something wrong neurologically.
