Why This Accidental Battery Breakthrough Matters

Agree on Nuclear Power. We have to work on a number of issues.
The article you posted says pretty much exactly what my point is.

"According to the latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), carbon capture and storage is a necessary part of our best-case climate scenarios. But currently, facilities like Orca only negate a sliver of global emissions."

"Two other plants are in planning phases: The Canadian company Carbon Engineering, which is backed by Bill Gates, started designing a similar facility in northeastern Scotland three months ago. It also plans to start construction on a a plant in Texas next year. Each of those facilities could remove up to 250 times more carbon per year than Orca."

"Friedmann thinks a drop to below $200 is likely by 2030, and a drop to $100 two decades after that. By that point, he said, the market for carbon removal market — companies paying to abate their emissions — will have grown significantly.
But even at that $100 price, removing all of humanity's annual carbon emissions would cost more than $5 trillion per year, according to Gates' book, "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster." That would require 50,000 Orca plants."

"The Orca facility does the work of 200,000 trees in 1,000 times less space," Friedmann said.
What's more, once a facility like this stores its carbon, it's locked away. If trees burn, the carbon they've absorbed gets released.

Obviously it's not the only solution. Carbon Removal is going to have to get better to be effective. They still need to plant trees and create more clean energy. They also need better Carbon capture technology. Reducing emissions is still very important as well.
I have a silly question (and maybe it's addressed in the article that I'm too lazy to read):

How long will any of these facilities have to run in order to offset the carbon emissions that will inevitably be generated during their construction?

That is addressed but it's pretty much all about improving the technology and finding a way to use(Sell) the carbon that is captured. The amount of carbon created in the construction is negligible in terms of tons of carbon. It's only a very small drop in a bucket that is created every day just in the US with 279,000,000 registered vehicles on the highways. Also once the facility is built it is built. It doesn't continue to create carbon. This is the same argument for batteries. Yes mining the minerals to make the batteries creates carbon. But the batteries create a way to not create carbon and they are the single most recycled product in the world. You only dig once and the battery can be used forever.
Here is the bright side. There is another plant in Italy that is now making long term high capacity batteries from carbon. If that continues to be successful then The carbon capture industry might have a way to use the carbon. That until now has been the problem. Nobody wants to put time and effort into something they cant make any money off of.
If that works then they will continue to build carbon capture plants and improve the technology which is needed because right now carbon Capture is in it's infancy and the actual amount of carbon that is being captured is only a speck of what needs to be.
There are very few capture facilities and there needs to be no less than 50,000 worldwide to make a dent. This is very possible but still this is only one of many things we need to do to stop the rise in temperature let alone get it to turn around.
Seriously this isn't about stopping Global Warming any longer. This is simply trying to reduce the amount of damage all of you under 50 will have to live through.

This is really cool. The main part of the video begins around the 6 minute mark.

'Gleefully Committing Arson': Gottheimer Gang May Derail Manchin Deal

"We must ask ourselves why Rep. Gottheimer is working so hard to sabotage the party when he knows a climate and jobs bill would not only help communities across the country, but would help Democrats win seats this cycle."

It is no wonder America can't get anything done for it's citizens or the planet. Both parties are owned by their donors.

Lucia and I are fine. The couch did a sine wave underneath us and the blinds rattled like crazy but no damage. Not sure where epicenter was, either it was far away or just a small tremor.
