You can go small by using Vonleh in the middle if Nurk and ML gets in foul trouble.

The projected luxury tax is 122 million. So Ezeli and Meyers should do it. Or any other combination of about 15-16 million. In addition if they dumped Crabbe's contract too, then they would also be under the salary cap. We can debate all day whether or not that is easy to do, but I do think it is possible.

Your analysis is correct, based on Spotrac. Also should be noted that we have $5M worth of first round picks to be added to the salary without any other deals, so that's another consideration.

I'm obviously clueless when it comes to luxury tax, so I'm going to keep asking stupid questions

If we pay luxury tax this season, but not next, does it affect anything down the road?

The NBA utilizes a luxury tax system that is applied if the team payroll exceeds a separate threshold higher than the salary cap. These teams pay a penalty for each dollar their team salary exceeds the tax level.
For 2015-16 and all subsequent seasons, teams pay the repeater rate if they were taxpayers in at least three of the four previous seasons. The table of rates is shown below.

Current Tax Levels
Amount over tax threshold Standard tax per excess dollar Repeat offender tax per excess dollar
$4,999,999 or less $1.50 $2.50
$5 million to $9,999,999 $1.75 $2.75
$10 million to $14,999,999 $2.50 $3.50
$15 million to $19,999,999 $3.25 $4.25
Over $20 million $3.75 + $0.50 per $5 million $4.75 + $0.50 per $5 million

Is the team planning on being in luxury tax next season? Just getting rid of Ezeli would put them under, no?
Next season is when CJ's extension kicks in, so we'll be in the luxury tax next season no matter what we do. The trick is not to trigger the tax a year early. IIRC, the first and second years' tax bill are calculated at one rate, the third consecutive season's penalty would be calculated at a drastically increased rate.

I'd be into signing Larry sanders or somebody if we can get them for a few years. The rest of this year doesn't matter though. But if we can add an asset to next years team why not.

Is Larry Sanders an asset? He's had workouts with a number of teams that need help upfront, but no one has made him an offer. And then, if you do sign him, he might get bored and quit on you - like he did in MIL. The guy had ONE good season, back in 2012-13. The two years after that he played in 23 and 27 games and hasn't played at all in over 2 years. At this point, he seems like a high risk low (or no) reward kind of signing.

Festus Ezili was a better risk than Larry Sanders, and we all know how that's worked out.

Yeah, probably right. Maybe worth the risk if he signs for a couple years at the minimum though.

If he signs here for the min, that means nobody else wants him. If nobody else wants him, there is a reason...

This Larry Sanders obsession needs to stop. Let him be someone else's mistake.

I listened to Dan Marang....bright guy...on a podcast yesterday talking about Terence Jones being the perfect player to shore up the roster at PF but you'd have to get past him beating up homeless people in the past...high risk character...high reward player.

...I thought he would fit well coming back home as well, but looks like Milwaukie just signed him so there goes that idea :sigh:

Our scoring will go up about 5 points a game.
