No Surprises as Nets Make Cuts

October 23, 2008, 6:40 pm The Nets announced Thursday that they have waived Eddie Gill, Brian Hamilton, Julius Hodge and Keith Van Horn to cut the roster down to 15, which is the allowed maximum. They were apparently unable to use Van Horn’s contract in a deal and will now be left with only Devin Harris and Keyon Dooling at the point.

yeah, bummer. now we REALLY need to get working on a trade or something. we need a 3rd point. dooling's out tomorrow, and devin is probable with a sprain, but in this scenerio that leaves us as...vince as starting point? and ?? as backup point?

All the more reason to use the last preseason game to practice some pick and roll basketball between VC and Brook, some Brook postups, and Vince postups with Anderson at the 4 feeding him in the post. CDR can bring the ball up if Devin sits.

I was really rooting for Hodge. Seemed like a really neat dude.

IMO everyone needs to work on the pick n pop/roll. It shouldnt only be Lopez. I want to also see ANderson and Yi pick and Pop. Boone and S.Will pick and roll.

I'd like to see them work on defending the pick and roll.

They're putting the points up people... we need some fuckin' defense!

from what I've seen, he did not impress me.

Don't think Hodge got a legitimate shot as a player. They expected him to play point, which he just can't do. It's like asking Richard Jefferson to play point guard, think how many turnovers he'd have! What I saw of Hodge when he wasn't expected to run the team seemed to be a good, lanky defender with a decent ability to score. I think he could've done well for the team in that kind of role. He was terrible as a point guard, though.

As much as I am for more defense, If you cant defend, you have to out score.

I think the other issue is the TOs. I think it is because of this new offense.

If you can't defend you might as well call it a career.

So much for this years "comeback guy". I was really rooting for Hodge, infinitely more so than I was Jay Williams or Allan Houston, but he simply didn't do enough to justify eating Ager's contract on top of paying his salary. Hopefully we can bring him in later in the season if we move some pieces around and need some more depth.

Good luck Julius!

Then 30% of the NBA should hang it up?

If their mindset is that they are never going to play defense and just out score people, then yes they should. Unless they are specialist off the bench surrounded by other great defenders. But they don't have to hang it up. They can go play for the Globetrotters.

In all seriousness, I want a team that is going to fight for a championship at some point and if the main young guys that are currently on this team are not going to buy into playing defense then we are in real trouble.

As much as it was a no brainer, this team always bought into defense until "You know Who" was bought here. Perimeter D has been a problem ever since when. Frank is to blame for that too. Harris Defense is bad right now, but he isnt the only guy on the perimeter.

If the main guy isnt a decnt defender, what do u expect.

Frank is one foot in and one foot out of Playing the Defense he preaches every year.

One more reason to trade Swift to Minny for Collins. He can help all these young guys get the rotations down.

We've seen Frank's defensive philosophy work very well when players know how to execute it. These guys just aren't getting it. Offenses are just way more difficult and the players way faster and more talented on the NBA level and these young guys get confused, but they can't abandon trying to get it figured out. Sometimes it looks like Devin has already given up. And Carter isn't that bad a defender. He's slightly above average for an all-star level SG that has to carry the bulk of the teams offense. I think he's better than players like Redd and Ray Allen and not on the level of Kobe or Rip.

I think you give him more credit then he deserves on the defense. Allen is a much better defender.

Carter is clearly a good defender, when properly motivated. He was infinitely better than RJ last season.

A couple of comments: top to bottom, this will be a better defensive squad than last year. In recent games, the off-season veteran acquisitions have all been injured--some, like Najera, will be strong defensive presences. This, in turn, has forced players like Gill, Ager, Hodge, etc. to play more minutes than they will in the regular season (Ager hasn't been bad, though). Carter, also, has played roughly ten to 15 minutes per game fewer than he will in the regular season.

Also, BOONE hasn't been able to play. Don't think that hasn't made a difference.

This team will be very erratic for the first six weeks. The question is how they will hold up emotionally. If they can keep their focus, and keep their confidence up, they will start to play better in mid December, and I think can stil achieve 35-40 wins. I am pencilling them in for 39, in part because I think they are very deep, and they should be able to withstand the normal amount of injuries better than some of the other teams they will be competing against (other than Vince, of course).

Ryan Anderson is a nice back up to have for Yi, I also think you could play CDR as a point with Carter for a little bit. Najara can guard multiple positions, so yeah we certainly have more depth than usual.

I could really use an upgrade at the starting sf and a reserve vet center would be nice, but I don't see it happening unless we move something bigger than Stro + picks. but that's neither her nor there.

I think that the morale level should stay high as long as the leadership is confident and committed. Youth has everything to gain here and that should keep things afloat.

Yeah last year but the three years before what do say there.

VC is not a good defender. He always loses his man and is always point to someelse to help him out.

Three years ago, Shaq was the best player in the league. I think I should go sign him to a 25million per contract.

I didnt say three years ago. I said the three years before that.

I dont get people. RJ is a way better defender then VC. Yeah he had a crappy defensive year, but he wasnt the only one that did bad defensively last year. VC is good player but dont exaggerate.

The Nets play TEAM defense and try to send players to the help defender. What you think is a mistake is part of the system. Now if the help isn't there or is late to rotate it looks bad. Don't get me wrong, he makes mistakes out there and isn't a shut down defender, but he isn't that bad.

I dont believe in mediocrity. Either he is good or not. Isnt that bad is just not good. SUPERSTAR needs to play VERY GOOD DEFENSE. I have accept NO competitive nature - VC is who he is. Now you want me to accept mediocre defense. When do I stop accepting and start calling it as it is.
