Well, he does have a decent track record. And the history with him, PA, and Adelman is intriguing. Only problem is, he's on contract for two more seasons.

Petrie is regarded as one of the brightest minds in the game. The Princeton grad also has deep Portland roots. He was the Blazers’ first draft choice, the NBA’s co-rookie of the year for the 1970-71 season. His retired No. 45 banner hangs in the Rose Garden rafters.

Owner Paul Allen worked well with Petrie during his time with the Blazers and retains great respect for the man who was instrumental to the club’s success in the early 1990s.

So, too, do many of those who worked with Petrie and/or know him well. Three employees in the Blazer organization told me in separate conversations Monday that Petrie would be a perfect fit to replace Rich Cho as general manager.

The Kings are in limbo, remaining in Sacramento after ownership’s intended move to Anaheim was blocked by the league for at least one more season. It can’t be a stable situation for Petrie and wife Anne-Marie, who both enjoyed their time in Portland.

I'd be perfectly happy with Allen hiring Petrie, but I can't help but think this will probably go off the rails in much the same way that it did the last time Allen squeezed him out.

If Petrie were willing to come here, that would be a pretty strong hire.

And if the Blazers are willing to dispense with Cho so quickly, maybe they'll call it quits on McMillan's deal too...which I'd support if they could get Adelman.

Petrie and Adelman has been a fairly successful partnership.

I'd be thrilled to see the Blazers hire Petrie. Who knows, maybe the reason for the delay in starting a search is that the decision's already made and they just have to wait for Petrie, or someone else in a similar situation, to get out of a contract with their current team.

That could be what Paul Allen is thinking as well. If he is indeed pushing for a win-now attitude because of health issues, as has been rumored, going back to guys who were proven performers could be exactly what he's looking for.

Wow if we got both Adelman and Petrie, then I would be extremely excited. I think that combo has been very successful in Portland and Sacramento.

HUUGE IF

Can't see Petrie wanting to deal with P.A.'s shenanigans all over again

Man, that is like dating your x wife, I just can not see PA doing that. I do like the idea, but if I remember right, the reason Petrie was let go was that he would not fire a coach..was that Rick?

I'd love this move and will not be surprised at all when Paul hires someone who is a huge step up from cho, if i didnt like the guy sitting next to me every game i'd fire his ass too..

Petrie's a smart guy, a Princeton guy. I'm sure he's not about to go work for Paul Allen realizing how capricious the guy is.

Give it up Paul! You know just as much about basketball as you do football! NOTHING!

P.S. Patty Mills sucks giant balls!

So if I'm Petrie, i demand a fat long term contract.

And if Allen really wants Petrie, he gives it to him.

Called it!

If we're going to bring back someone from the ancient past, I cast my vote overwhelmingly for Petrie over Whitsitt. Shit, Petrie built an NBA champion in Sacramento, with a lot fewer resources to work with, only to have the championship stolen from him by Stern and his minions. He twice won NBA Executive of the Year. With Sacramento in disarray, I say we go after Petrie!

Boy... wouldn't it be funny if Petrie fucked over PA.

Paul: Hey Jeff, I know it's been a while but would you ever consider coming back to the Blazer?

Petrie: Sure, I'd consider it, but you'd have to get rid of Cho first.

Paul: Done. Let me make the call.

*a few minutes later*

Paul: Okay, I called him up and fired him. Now how about coming back to the Blazers?

Petrie: My answer is no.

Paul: But you said you'd consider it!

Petrie: I did consider it. My answer is no. Go buy yourself another tennis superstar.

I think it would be funnier if he said yes, came back, and built a dynasty here. Ok, maybe not funnier, but funner.

This is hilarious. At the exact time you were typing this, I was postulating the same dream team to my Chiropractor. :)

I see your problem here...the blazers called Jeff Petrie when they meant to call Geoff Petrie.

Do you have PapaG's permission to use that word? You could get into big trouble, you know.

barfo

he owns the word funnier?

I was spelling it frenetically. Clearly.

Um...why were you spelling something "frenetically"? And how does that excuse misspelling his name?

It was a joke. I ducked up. My bad for attempting to make a funny.

Neither Petrie nor Adelman would ever work for PA again. The same can probably be said for most people he's fired.

But PA has always made a point of avoiding hiring anyone who might have the stones or credibility to question his management, and I doubt he'll ever have the self-confidence to do so in the future.

If Petrie only wanted to work one more year, it would be a good move.
