Gee, I was wondering why Egypt wasn't on the itinerary for Obama's trip to Africa after the big success of the 'Arab Spring'. :dunno:

CAIRO Egyptian security and medical officials say an American has been killed in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria during clashes between supporters and opponents of Egypt's embattled President Mohammed Morsi.

Alexandria security chief Gen. Amin Ezz Eddin told Al-Jazeera TV that an American was killed Friday in Sidi Gabr Square while photographing the battles between opposition youth and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails.

A medical official told The Associated Press the American was wounded by gunshots and died at the hospital. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

An official at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo told CBS News' Alex Ortiz that it was aware of the report and was seeking to confirm it.

Six Egyptians have been killed in days of clashes ahead of nationwide protests Sunday demanding Morsi's removal.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is warning Americans against all but essential travel to Egypt and moving to reduce the official U.S. presence in the country amid fears of widespread unrest.

The State Department said Friday that Americans should defer nonessential travel to Egypt, citing the uncertain security situation. It also said it would allow nonessential staff and the families of personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to leave Egypt until conditions improve.

The move doesn't require anyone to depart but encourages them to go by allowing them to do so at government expense. Officials say dependents and nonessential staff could be ordered to leave if the situation deteriorates.

Out of Precaution, Marines on Ready to Go to Egypt to Protect U.S. Embassy, Citizens

U.S. Marines stationed in southern Europe have been put on alert as a precaution in advance of expected large demonstrations and potential unrest in Egypt this weekend, CNN has learned.

About 200 combat capable Marines in Sigonella, Italy, and Moron, Spain, have been told to be ready to be airborne within 60 minutes of getting orders to deploy, according to two administration officials.

The units have several V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft that would carry troops and infantry weapons to Egypt to protect the U.S. Embassy and American government personnel and citizens if violence broke out against Americans.

The planned demonstrations are aimed against the Egyptian government.

The officials both emphasized this is contingency planning in advance of the expected demonstrations to ensure American military assets, including rescue forces, can act if needed. In the event Americans had to be evacuated from Egypt and could not get to the airport due to the unrest, there are about 2,000 additional Marines on board three Navy warships in the Red Sea, officials said.

A third official said the decision to keep the warship in the Red Sea was "very precautionary."

What investigations? No need to investigate a boneheaded foreign policy mistake in what was a friendly country to America. Now, it's run by Islamists, and the US stands by idly while more a secular opposition tries to fight for their country and future.
