Curious what the reactions and opinions this season will be towards our players and their stats. It has been a constant theme on here for example when Kevin Love had been brought up. People used to blast the Love Boat for putting up "empty stats".
Saying he is only averaging 25/15 because he plays on a crappy team and shoots so much.
So I'm curious come mid December when we (in my opinion) will be 6-22, how you will judge if our guys are playing well or not based on "empty stats"
Dame is going to get his 25ppg, but I have NO clue what the rest of the guys will average, let alone what the rotation will be.
Just wondering if the same group of people, and there were quite a few of you, will claim our guys are throwing up "empty stats" as well.

Damian will average over 20ppg.

I don't think anyone else will average over 15.
CJ may come close and maybe Henderson, but I don't think anyone else will. Aminu may average double figures.

If we're 6-22 in mid December, it means Olshey got fired and Sam Hinkie took over.....

6-22 would be perfect. This season would be a success if we lose games but succeed in developing talent. Get a top pick. Add talent.

What could Neil Olshey do with a #1 pick? He got the second best player out of the 2012 draft with the 6th pick.

Depends on how each stat is obtained.

If Lillard is leading the league in scoring by chucking up 50 shots a game, it is stat padding. If any stat is gained thru sacrificing the team goals, it is worthless IMO.

This season should be all about:

1. Developing Noah Vonleh and see if he can be our PFOTF
2. Seeing if CJ, Leonard, Plumlee are worth keeping long term
3. Finding a deal for Kaman + ???? to get a young SG that can score

That's it really. Aminu and Davis (and probably Plumlee) are glue guys we could always use forever. Everything else is just noise.

Yeah, and I don't think he's that guy. He's not going to jack up 50 shots. In fact, I thought he played better as the primary distributor. I beat the drum last season that he played better as a point guard when Batum was out. He handled the ball more, and he distributed the ball better when Nic wasn't in the lineup. He might average the most assists of his career this season.

There aren't a lot of shooting guards that can score anymore. Maybe Ben McLemore?

Harrison Barnes or DeRozan. I guess a 3 or 4. No on Ben McLemore, has to be closer to being an all star, otherwise just roll the dice with CJ.

HCP, I don't think most people are going to look at it that way this year. Minny was a chronically bad team with a big stat guy. We are a totally rebuilding team with unknown pieces. If Portland is still lottery bound in 3-4 years then you can ask this question.

Stats of interest:
Dame: Assists. Personally, I don't really care what he scores. Is he trying to do more out of the PnR and get other guys involved.
CJ: FG %, Asst: is he showing some ability to play PG? Is he taking good shots? Is he playing reasonable defense
Meyers: # of threes v. # of dunks: Is he balancing his outside shooting with some post work? Is he rebounding and defending well?
Plumlee: Reb and defensive shooting %: Is he a starting center?
Harkless: 3pt %: Can he hit the open three?
Aminu: 3pt %: Can he hit the open three?
Crabbe: FG %, number of shots taken: can he be aggressive enough and take smart shots to be considered in the mix for SG minutes--or is he on his way out?
Vonleh: Reb & FG %: Can he slow the game down enough to make smart moves? Is he rebounding and defending?

It's unfortunate that Bennett signed with the Raptors because he would have been a nice trade chip. Not sure what we could offer them at this point. All we have is young bigs.

I don't think they want to pay him max money and will be looking to dump him.

Sure, but we need assets. Kaman is a nice filler contract, but it would cost someone like CJ to get that done.

But we can just offer a max contract next summer. We're tanking for draft picks, we don't really need to get that SG now, we have the flexibility to do whatever we want.

What if the plan is to trade for someone like DeRozan and then sign someone like Barnes?

Bullshit. Tanking is for losers.

I'm not saying lose on purpose, but wins don't help us right now. If we aren't good enough to make the playoffs, wins will only hurt the advancement of this roster.

You forgot one. KEVIN DURANT!!! The Blazers should go after either Kevin Durant, Harrison Barnes or DeMar DeRozan in that order.

Make it happen Neil!!!

This is a total pipe dream. Durant was PISSED about going #2 and there is no way he leaves Westbrook and Ilbaka to come play with Dame/Leonard especially because we passed on him once already. Other teams that have a bigger strings attached to Durant and are in better situations will be the only ones who stand a real chance of luring Durant away.

Tank heads and lottery pick geeks always ignore the experience a team gets in the playoffs..in many ways it's the most important lesson they learn all season. We've got a bunch of young, top picks from the recent past and if they make the playoffs this season, it's frickin' awesome!

I've never been a huge fan of the "empty stats" arguments, or label. But fans will always look to make excuses for their own players. If they're on the "empty stats" side, then they say how much harder it is to get those stats on a bad team, because their guy constantly faces triple teams. If it's the other way, it's tougher to put stats up on a loaded team because not enough shots to go around. Or, conversely, it's easy to put up stats on a loaded team, because nobody pays attention to so and so. And it's easier on a loser team because they can chuck and not care about "team". Easy to mold an argument to however you want.

I've only thought of stats as empty stats if it's like, Will Barton chucking in a blowout win for us sort of stats. But whatever.

I'm not too worried about specific stats for any guys, and more just how they look getting them. But I'm sure we'll see plenty of the above 4 arguments made this year.

I always thought of the empty stat guy as a JJ Hickson when it came to the Blazers..contract player who'd get his even at the expense of winning..rebound stealers who steal from teammates
