The Iowa Energy bolted out to a 20-2 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 126-101 win over the New Mexico Thunderbirds Friday night. Stefhon Hannah led the charge with a 28 point, 6 assist, 5 rebound night.
The win moves the Energy to 36-13 with one game remaining in the regular season. An Iowa win in that game would tie the all-time NBA D-League regular season win record of 37-13 set by the Energy last year.
The opening tip was a sign of things to come as Hannah received the jump and completed a layup while being fouled only two seconds into the game. Stanley Robinson and Hannah scored eight points each in the early 20-2 run. Iowa extended the lead to as many as 29 points in the 4th quarter and never trailed in their first trip of the year to New Mexico.
Robinson finished with 22 points while Marqus Blakely added 21 in the win. Curtis Stinson, named NBA D-League Player of the Month earlier in the day, scored 15 points and handed out 17 assists.
New Mexico was led by J.R. Giddens' 21 points while Dar Tucker added 20. The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 20-29 on the year.
Iowa made 12 3-pointers on the night while combining for 33 assists on 43 made field goals. The Energy also outrebounded New Mexico 50-38 in the game.
The win is the Energy's 149th consecutive game in first place in their conference.
Iowa has already clinched the #1 overall seed for the 2011 NBA D-League Playoffs. Tickets for the Energy's first home playoff games will go on sale Monday at 10 AM. To order tickets, visit www.dahlstickets.com, call 564-8550 or visit the arena box office.
