NBC News attempted to backtrack on an article published Wednesday which claimed President Donald Trump did not visit the troops over Christmastime when in fact, he did.

The liberal news outlet admitted in an extended editor's note that "the thrust of this article is no longer correct." NBC also adjusted the headline to: "Trump becomes first president since 2002 not to visit troops on or before Christmas." The president and first lady left Wednesday night to visit the troops on Thursday.

The note which was published at the top of the original article read: "On Wednesday, NBC News compiled a list of every Christmastime visit to active troops by a president since 2001. That list, as detailed in the article below, showed that former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama visited troops on or before Christmas every year since 2003, and President Donald Trump did so in 2017.

"As of the end of Christmas Day 2018, Trump had not visited troops during the holiday season, and had announced no plans to do so. The article was correct, but on Dec. 26, the situation changed. Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, made an unannounced visit to troops in Iraq. As a result, the thrust of this article is no longer correct, even if it was at the time."

The note continued: "In the interest of transparency, we are keeping the article on NBCNews.com so that the record will reflect the situation on the day the article was published, and are directing readers to the article about Trump’s Iraq visit here. We are also altering one line in the article, as well as the headline, to be more specific and to note that Trump was the first president since 2002 who didn’t visit military personnel on or before Christmas, rather than at Christmastime."

NBC News' mistake comes after Trump's visit to Iraq was heavily criticized by the media. CNN's overwhelmingly negative reporting drew attention to some troops bringing MAGA hats for the president to sign and how this may be against the guidelines, which forbids active members of the military from participating in “political activities.”

The story by CNN politics reporter Eli Watkins, headlined “Troops bringing Trump hats to sign may violate military rule,” was criticized by press secretary Sanders, among others, who fired back at CNN on Thursday, tweeting that the network “will attack anyone who supports President Trump, including the brave men and women of our military who fight everyday to protect our freedom.”

CNN anchor Don Lemon also took shots at Trump for visiting the troops while the U.S. Coast Guard continues to work without pay during the partial government shutdown and later referred to Trump as “The Grinch” for making Christmas about him as well as his visit with the troops. Former NSA adviser Samantha Vinograd agreed, saying the president “should’ve stayed home.”

Later on, CNN’s April Ryan said Trump’s visit with the troops “should have happened a long time ago” and questioned whether everyone “should be commending him” for something presidents have done in the past.

You just watched the video and still don't know what she said?

She said for the first time in her adult lifetime she is proud of her country.

She didn't say whether she had ever been proud to be an American.

I'm proud to be an American and the endless wars we've waged during my adult lifetime have kept me from being proud of us for most of that time.

I was proud of our citizens after the response we had to 9/11 and then our government killed unknown numbers of people who had nothing to do with it.

Which continued during her husband's entire presidency.

Lanny, Im convicted this am as I got got up in mud slinging, which Im usually the first to be critical of people or media that do so.
I actually have a great deal of respect for both the first ladies and I don't even really know them. Has to be a tough position to be in.

All she said was she was proud that people wanted change. You could read into it that all she was proud of was that people voted for a black guy for once. They didn't really get much change....

A. How do you know she said it for the first time in her adult life? Speculation?
B. She specifically ruled out the election of her husband for her belief that she was now really proud of America. I can't recall the real reason but I know that when she said that I did know her reason and it had nothing to do with the election of her husband. . . . I just looked it up. She said it at a campaign stop and according to her she said it because of the large voter turnout;
C. I pay more attention to the news than anyone you know and I can't recall any Liberals spewing hate for Jews. I'm sure it goes on, I just don't see it's salient presence. On the other hand, I've heard anecdotes of Trump spewing such hate in what he thought was private. I've also seen with my own eyes and ears Nazis spew such hate, the same Nazis praised by Trump. 1 +1 = 2.
 
Homeland Security blasts CNN, says TSA 'sick out' report 'grossly misrepresented' situation at airports

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman lashed out at CNN on Friday, labeling as "fake news" the network's report that hundreds of Transportation Security Administration screeners at the nation’s airports have been staging a "sick out" this week amid the partial government shutdown.

In a tweet, DHS spokesman Tyler Houlton accused the network of failing to validate its data and not reaching out to agency officials for verification.

"More #FakeNews from @CNN. Security operations at airports have not been impacted by a non-existent sick out. CNN has the cell numbers of multiple @TSA public affairs professionals, but rather than validate statistics, they grossly misrepresented them," the tweet read.

The TSA, meanwhile, tweeted a more measured response that said employee absences began over the holidays but have had minimal impact on security operations.

"Call outs began over the Holiday period and have increased, but are causing minimal impact given there are 51,739 employees supporting the screening process," the tweet said. "TSA is grateful to the agents who show up to work, remain focused on the mission and respectful to the traveling public."

Even in the middle of the shutdown, TSA officers are mandated to work without pay.

A TSA spokesperson told the Times that wait times for passengers to board flights could increase if the call-outs persist, and that the agency "is grateful to the agents who show up to work, remain focused on the mission and respectful to the traveling public as they continue the important work necessary to secure the nation’s transportation systems.”

The concern over airport security staffing followed speculation last month over whether Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen would keep her job.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske recently urged President Trump to keep Nielsen despite reports that the president had grown frustrated with her leadership.

"I've worked for Secretary Nielsen for a little over a year now and in my view, she’s been an outstanding secretary of homeland security," said Pekoske, according to the Washington Examiner. "And she has been very, very supportive of me as the TSA administrator, very interested in our issues, and importantly, very engaged with our workforce."

Seattle TV station fires editor over doctored video of Trump’s Oval Office address

Seattle’s Fox affiliate, Q13, fired a staffer after apparently doctored footage of President Donald Trump’s Tuesday evening Oval Office address aired on the station.

The broadcast video appeared to add orange coloring to the president and was made to appear -- inaccurately -- as if Trump stuck out his tongue throughout the address.

“This does not meet our editorial standards and we regret if it is seen as portraying the president in a negative light,” Q13 news director Erica Hill told the Seattle Times on Thursday.

“We’ve completed our investigation into this incident and determined that the actions were the result of an individual editor whose employment has been terminated,” Hill added.

Q13 did not immediately respond when asked for additional comment.

MyNorthWest.com posted a side-by-side comparison of the Q13 footage and undistorted footage that aired on CNN.

“That comparison revealed the Q13 video creating a loop of the President licking his lips -- making it seem bizarre and unbalanced -- it also seems that someone distorted the President’s face and may have added an orange tone to his skin,” MyNorthWest.com’s Todd Herman wrote.
