Am I the only one who finds Kevin Smith to be overrated? His only movie I really liked was Chasing Amy. I just don't understand why he has such a huge following.

He himself admits he has limited talent. He has a cult following but he is hardly considered a master director. My list is:

Martin Scorsese (he basically was one of the first ones to use pop songs/rock songs in a movie, before that it was all score - he also has some CRAZY shots like camera pans and tilts and uniterrupted takes like long orchestrated shots
Sergio Leone (tarantino's favorite, invented the spaghetti western - nuff said)
Sidney Lumet (all the best courtroom films are him)
Billy Wilder (directed Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard; second most versatile director ever)
Ridley Scott (most versatile director ever- Alien, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Matchstick Men, Thelma & Louise, GI Jane???)
PT Anderson (Boogie Nights)
Michael Mann (Heat!!!!)

Two hailed directors that I think are really overrated:
Steven Soderbergh (Traffic)
David Fincher (Fight Club, The Game)

I read for a small role in "The Game" directed by fincher - as a carjacker lol. the guy was SO pretentious. plus some of the comments he has made about filmmaking bug me. and no it's not cause i didn't get the part!~

A director's intake/vision of a script often makes or breaks a movie.

Personally, I perfer Martin Scorsese movies.

Still, what matters is the movie not the director. I'll go to see a movie if it looks good, not because it has someones name on it.

The most underrated director of our time is Vincent Gallo . He's got his fair share of critics, but the man is a genius. Maybe you've never heard of him, because his movies are never big theatrical releases, and he's only done a few, but you may know him from 'The Brown Bunny' or 'Buffalo 66'.

Sofia Coppola is also equally as brilliant. I've actually never seen 'Lost in Translation', her biggest movie to date, but I did catch 'The Virgin Suicides' and the short film, 'Lick the Star', both of which had absolutely horrible scripts but were turned into interesting films because of Coppola's direction.

I love all of Kevin Smith's movies (though I havent seen Jersey Girl), it may not really be his directing as much as his writing though. Scorsese is awesome too, Tarantino is nice but a bit overrated, Spielberg is pretty damn good. Bob Saget directed my favorite movie of all time, Dirty Work.

Sometimes actually, as some artists' music are very commercial and terriblly done but sometimes they'll release 1 good song. But movies and music are two different things. I still hold true though, who makes the movie doesn't really matter to me its the movie itself.
