Misleading to say Kreider was signed only because he was the last vet. Even if that was the case, he was the last vet for a reason. He brings a lot of the on and off ice attributes that have been emphasized ever since the rebuild. Size, speed, character, etc. It is a huge clue as to how the organization viewed Kreider vs Hayes that Hayes as a C was the one traded away while Kreider as a winger was signed. You can disagree with the reasoning, and it is a valid criticism that his disappearing acts are continuing to be a problem, but it was a calculated decision and was not just "well he's the last guy here so let's sign him."
The covid situation with Z is real. There are numerous examples of pro athletes taking a good amount of time to get back up to speed across all sports. My concern though is that Z's offseason training and off ice work ethic were already in question and one of the reasons OTT decided to move on from him. Is he doing everything he needs to do to get back in shape? Had he already been slacking off with his training when he got it, putting him even farther behind the 8 ball for this season? Dont know, but he has been SO bad, so far beyond whatI would have expected even with covid, that it is fair to ask. He flubbed more one timers over the past 3 games than he did all last year.
Chytil getting hurt this year really complicates the C situation, and the upcoming decision on Zibanejad. If Chytil was continuing to improve and show signs of a future 2C as he was earlier this year, maybe we decide we can afford to move on from Zbad and go all in on Eichel or another target at that caliber. Now it's a question mark of whether Z is still our near term 1C and we go after a lesser target. Lots of moving pieces here made more complicated by the Chytil injury. Hopefully he is back soon.
