Fire Stotts

This is my first season with SC2 and I'm still getting a feel for the rhythm and flow of how things work as we get some games under our belt. So.....if and when we go on a 5-6 game winning streak, is that when the "Stotts For Coach Of The Year" thread starts???

Never happen. Remember, the forum is always smarter than any coach or GM.

Stotts just signed an extension before this season. He has a contract through 2020. Don't think we would make a move until at least end of 17/18 season. Much better idea to spend some of Paul's money on a legit defensive coordinator.

When you read your old comments when a thread gets bumped.

How about we threaten Stotts instead of firing him?

We could write up a really stern letter outlining why we're angry and then I could send it to the Blazers to put in his personnel file.

Lets fire @HCP to show Stotts how serious we are!

We should have Nate McMillan night at the Moda!

Have the players tuned him out? I was never the biggest Stotts fan but thought he was deserving of an extension. However, the passion this team played with all of last year is gone. They rarely look like they're having a good time out there. I don't think anyone has the answer as to what's really going wrong in Rip City ... Is it Terry's fault? Does it all fall on Neil's shoulders? And, at what point, do you start calling out the players?

Likely answer: It's a combination of all three.

It's great to see you posting again!

I don't think Terry makes it through the season. And it's a damn shame.

Yeah. I know Terry has his limits but this team is badly constructed. It's like the roster equivalent of a Goodwill sale run. Lots of players acquired under pressured trades, unrealized draft picks that didn't work out for other teams, and free agents that really didn't push the needle. It worked last year when they caught the league by surprise.... but it's obvious other teams have broken us down.

I don't see a lot of natural defenders out there. Making matters worse, our two best players (Damian and CJ) are both very poor at that end and will probably never be any better than average (length, lateral quickness, desire/inclination don't change much this far in). Add in the fact that a shitload of guys got paid and it's only human nature that some of their fire is going to go out when they aren't playing for a tangible, physical reward.

Is it Terry's fault? Well, he's never been much of a defensive coach, but I don't see guys completely confused on the court and it's basically the same personnel that managed a somewhat average defensive performance last year. Maybe they are tuning him out and need a different voice, but they're going to need to do something with this roster no matter who you might bring in to replace him.

That said, Neil Olshey isn't likely to fire himself and it's going to be tough to reshape the roster with all of the salary he threw at it last summer, so firing Stotts would certainly be the most expedient "solution."

I appears to me that Stotts has lost the players. I agree it is a combination of all three. The list has its evident flaws, but the strategy of having lots of reasonably priced assets, will hopefully enable us to make a big trade or two to improve. Stotts offence is working well for the most part, but the defence is awful/atrocious/abysmal. It needs to change. The players are not putting in enough effort, on either end; but especially on defence. Someone needs to call them on their bullshit. I think we're really missing Kaman, and Henderson in this regard. I don't know how Stotts manages the players, but he seems like a supportive, encouraging coach. That approach obviously isn't working right now. Given I think Stotts has lost the players, I also think he should change tack, and go absolutely apeshit at them. Really challenge each, and every one of them, especially the leaders. Even if it backfires, and alienates them even more, I don't see how they could play any less for him.

There has got to be a better way than giving away starters like Robin Lopez. That hurt us. Imagine the shorter Plumlee at PF. Do we blame Denny, or Sly?

Glad someone brought up height so I could mention: Tonight I noticed that Meyers Leonard is a couple inches taller than JaVale McGee, who I had thought was the same height.

I honestly think one of the issues this team is having is internal discord. It's tough to be all in when Dame & CJ get all the attention for being 'great' players when they take several terrible shots a game & give up everything they score on the defensive side.

There are a few problems but our biggest need is another contributor in the backcourt.
Dame plays 36 mpg, CJ plays 36 mpg (didn't check the exact numbers but it's something like that) but they only play together 24 mpg and for half the game we play just one of them in an ineffective 1-guard lineup. This is our biggest weakness.
I thought we could somehow overcome this deficiency by playing either Meyers, Aminu or Harkless at the 4, thus giving us a more creative, talented lineup but it's either not happening or not working.
I personally don't like Stotts as a basketball coach, I think he himself is not creative enough with his substitutions, is usually unable or unwilling to shuffle the rotations and doesn't react well to in-game situations. But if Neil makes adjustments like bringing another guard who would at least get minutes in a 3-guard rotation with Dame and CJ then I wouldn't mind him staying, mostly because he really is a nice guy and I like him on a personal level

There are a few problems but our biggest need is another contributor in the backcourt.

Last night in extended blowout minutes, Shabazz Napier looked just as fancy as Lillard on offense. His weakness is supposed to be playmaking, but he made good decisions. I thought, this guy will last a full career as an NBA substitute once he escapes Portland.

In economics, when you have several eye-apparent issues that aren't easily dissectable, it is a much better strategy to take small samples from many different pools(ideas), rather than make one drastic, huge change.
Furthermore, each sample must be taken individually and observed/studied in conjunction with the rest of the original "plan" in order to properly diagnose it's effects, both positive and negative.

Given NO's love of numbers and studying analytics, I am starting to wonder if he will pull the trigger on something big.
I think he will keep his moves small, calculated and precise, and they wont happen in a quick succession. They will be spread out over the remainder of this season and next season. This isn't to say he wont go for a trade for DMC, but If he does do something like that, it will be the only thing he does. I have been conflicted in that he should make moves now while values of other teams' players are low, but I think its one at a time.

I think he views the end of next season as somewhat of a deadline to have this team formed for the last couple of years of CJ and Dame's contract to make the major push. The west will have a somewhat different look in two years as teams like the Clippers will probably blow it up, Dallas is in the middle of a spiral, etc.

I am not saying it will work, or it is the right play, but so far, looking at NO's history, I think he has a winning percentage with regards to these types of moves, and if he pulls off a few more correct moves over the next year and a half, we might not be in near as bad of shape as it seems at the moment.

We live in an instant world, I know, but this is a long season to a long sport and GM's are almost always looking long term. Patience is a virtue my friends. Let things play out. And if NO buries himself, so be it, but I think his long term plan far exceeds the vision of many of us forum members.

I've seen this idea bandied about and it's just not realistic in basketball. You can't give a guy you supposedly believed in a huge contract, then months into it, tell him half his job is going to be given to someone else. Who gets final say? Organizations don't work well with multiple voices leading them. Guys' egos get in the way, and it will just confuse the players more.

Maybe it could work in a setting when different players are playing O and D, but certainly not in this setting

We need talent. We have two duplicitous players in the backcourt. That is it. The rest of the team is garbage. Olshey sucks.

What has changed in our coaching since last season? Just one change. Jay Triano left to become a Phoenix Suns assistant coach. He has 2.8 seasons of head coaching experience with the Toronto Raptors. This is what destroyed us.
