At this point, I'd love to see Bayless in at PG w/Roy. Both driving and causing fouls.

It's the Portland Trailblazers, not the Portland Roys.

Sergio plays as a team, in the playoffs Roy has played selfishly and neutralized his teammates.

These both should have been easy wins for us. Lack of, nearly total absence of, team offense and ball movement almost cost us this game just as surely as it cost us the first game.

No way we win in Houston riding 2 guys on offense, and I doubt Nate is happy how we won the game.

I agree the rest of the team has to step up, but when it was do or die Roy and LMA made sure that this was still a series. More power to them! When other players start hitting shots they'll get them more involve, but Roy is often to unselfish and thank god he wasn't last nite! Other than Roy and LMA only Rudy had decent numbers shooting. The rest of the players best star taking it inside like Roy was!

It's a stupid cliche that has never proven to be true.

The deepest teams that play team ball are always the champs in the end.

Actually, it's the reason we were 1 and out so many years.

I hate to bring up bad memories, but in 2000 the Blazers had 2 starters at every position. The Lakers had two superstars and role players.

Remember all those one and done years when we pissed and moaned about not having a true "go to guy"?

It has been said, and with justification, that in the playoffs you can tell the true superstars from just good players. Cliffy was a good player, an all star, but not a superstar because of his postseason struggles. Look at the great players who won multiple titles. All of them stepped up in the playoffs. They scored more, had the ball more. With Chicago, every play went through Jordan or Pippen.

And when Travis is not hitting shots, Rudy is OK but not stelllar off the bench, the big guys in foul trouble, that is EXACTLY when superstars need to take it to the next level.

I mean, what is Maris' quibble? The Blazers won with their best players having stellar games. Look at the teams that are winning; without exception you see a stellar performance by one or two players and supporting roles from the others. The one exception would be Ben Gordon's spectacular performance in a loss, but that was a neck and neck game that came down to a final miracle shot. And that series will be won by the team that has one or two guys stepping up every game.

You really do just make this stuff up don't you?

Ever hear of the Miami Heat??? Dwyane Wade, Shaq and a bunch of over the hill coat tail riders. After going down 0 - 2, Wade scored 42, 36, 43 and 36 over the next four games to lead the Heat to the title. Wade averaged 39.25 PPG over the last four games of that series, Shaq averaged 15 and nobody else averaged double figures. If Wade wouldn't have taken over the series - much like Roy did last night, the much deeper Mavericks would have won the title.

There are countless other examples of "superstar" leading their teams to NBA titles. In the play-offs, the cream rises to the top, and with a few exceptions 2004 Pistons), the team with the best player one or two players (Jordan/Pippen, Shaq/Kobe, Hakeem, etc.) wins the title.

I mean, what is Maris' quibble?

His quibble is that his favorite player only got 3 minutes of PT in the Blazers most important game in six years. That the coach actually played his best players the most minutes - and it worked, the team won.

Who is that?

Names huh? Well for starters I'd make a play for Andre Miller or Ramon Sessions in free agency this off-season, Miller is old at 33, but durable as hell and his game has never been predicated on blinding speed so it's reasonable to expect that he'd be able to hold down the position for another 2 or 3 years, Sessions isn't a crusty vet, but he's a very solid 2nd year guy who plays efficiently, makes beautiful passes and can actually create his own shot. Beyond that, I think KP finally has the pieces to make a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 trade, or the capspace to make a lopsided trade for any number of players ... I won't name names because I wouldn't claim to know who is going to be on the trade block

Since Sergio and Jerryd haven't really played the last 2 games, the playoffs have only exposed Blake's weaknesses, and how much better we are when all 3 play rather than 1.

I see no need at all for another PG, just a better mix of PT.

As for trading for a "veteran", just let that bad, bad idea go.

Never gonna happen as KP likes these guys a lot.

3 mediocre (or just plain bad and/or inexperienced) point guards can be mixed and matched anyway you like and it still adds up to an unsettled position and eventually some hard feelings as guys get squeezed for minutes.

Furthermore, if KP is so in love with these players that he'd be unwilling to let any go to better the team through trades or consolidation then that would make him a bad GM, but since everything I've seen him do up to this point suggests he's not a bad GM I'm guessing he'll try to improve the team -- liking his players as people has got nothing to do with it.

Nik, think of all the great Zurs gear you could have made in the time you've spent arguing with Maris this season. You could have a fully matching set of brown paper bag Zurs gear. If only we could turn back the hands of time. :sigh:

And there is no question as to why Sergio got 3 minutes of PT. If you go back and look, you will see that Sergio got yanked right after some absolutely ATROCIOUS defensive efforts by him, that resulted in our other guys having to foul to cover for him. (As we were already in the penalty)

When our second biggest concern is their PG, Brooks, we can't have our PG unable to guard a chair. Blake didn't play amazingly, but his defense was light years better than Sergio's.

Sometimes I get the feeling I can't help myself, I'm just a disagreeable, argumentative asshole who loves to spar. I know I keep falling for the same tired schtick but it's only because I believe at the core of my being that stupidity deserves to pushed back against ... I'd like to think I'm fighting the 'good fight', but deep down I know I'm edging toward that line (or already crossed it) where the axiom "never argue with a fool, because people might not be able to tell the difference" could apply.

Maris is a charachiture. I don't know if very many people actually take him seriously on this board. He's just another personality.

No I don't take him seriously (in that I think he actually believes half of what he writes) but there's just enough doubt in my mind that he could be that thick that I feel somehow compelled to counter his endless raft of bullshit.

Just call me Sisyphus :banghead:

Game bullets:

*The Rockets are going with the theory that they are going to let our big guys score and stop our role players. The reason being, they have a couple of good options to try and defend 1 on 1. It worked out in game 1, didn't in game 2. Will they continue this philosophy in game 3? Near the end of the game they started veering away from it. They might switch the defense just in order to confuse younger players, next game.

*Steve Blake was doing a very good job at pushing Aaron Brooks to one side so he could not get comfortable getting his shot off. If you watch him, he always moves to one side before he shoots. Blake was stopping him from doing this. My question is, why didn't the rest of the Blazers read the scouting report? They were not doing this.

*If I have to sit at the arena and listen to some dude behind me in section 301 bitch about Lamarcus Aldridge and how they should yank him out of the game when he damn near put down 27 and 12 and shooting over 50% I am going go postal.

*Dikembe Mutombo. I never wanted to see that guy go down to an injury like he had last night. We probably finally saw his final game last night. A true warrior in the post, and a player who took part on some very memorable series in the past (Like Denver knocking off Seattle, the first #8 taking out a #1 seed, ever).

Was he calling for LMA to be yanked and Sergio to be put in? If so, I think you just met Maris. :devilwink:

.

Name names. Who else besides Miller and Sessions? You can't just magically materialize the perfect PG for us. The guy has to actually exist. Sessions has no playoff experience and is not he vet than people are calling for. And Miller, like you said, is too old.

Sessions has no playoff experience and is not he vet than people are calling for.

Neither is/was Roy or Aldridge. I'll take talent over experience. They'll all become veterans.

And Miller, like you said, is too old.

No, he's the perfect age. Gives Portland 2/3 years of very solid point guard play while Bayless develops. Miller retires or moves on, Bayless takes over.

We have our PG of the future, he's just not playing on the team right now.

Neither is/was Roy or Aldridge. I'll take talent over experience. \.

I will too. But Nik said, and NateBishop agreed, that the Blazers needed "a veteran point who has a track record of high level performance and a starter's game." I responded by asking who that person is and Ramon Sessions was one of the answers. But Sessions hardly fits that description.

I'm fine with the point guards we have. If Avery Johnson can win a championship, then so can Blake.
