Florida tomorrow

ThePrunetang cooked us a delicious meal, took us to a cool park on the beach and educated us about the local flora and fauna. Even knew about a couple of racoons that strangely enough live in the jetty rocks there! We both had an awesome and interesting day and met a genuinely nice person we would like to return the favor to sometime.

Thanks again and we found the socks when we got back.
Maybe we can try to plan something once I get back to Oregon. Have fun in New Orleans! I'm pretty jealous. ..hehe

Just remember to hit us with some photo updates when you aren't busy with the bath salts, of course.

So, just got back from the beach with maris and his wife. Great people. That was my first time meeting someone from a message board and it wasn't as weird as I thought it might be. It was actually really fun. And we didn't run into Florida Man. So that was nice too.

Who's next to come to Florida?
I have every intention of being down in that that neck of the woods next year right about this time. Basically just long enough to claim I've been to Florida. If you're still there, I'll bring the weed....if you don't mind hangin' with John Goodman's doppelgänger........

Was just in N'awlins about a month ago.

Here is what we liked:

French Quarter: Café Du Mond (get some beignets and café au lait), Muffaletta for lunch at Central Grocer, Dueling Piano Bar at Patty O'Brien's, ummm if you are kind of weird and have a buddy with you after some binge drinking you can have a piss contest in the Hand Grenade bar. Just go in the bar bathroom and bring some quarters, Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar (one of the oldest bars in New Orleans, dates back to the 1700's), People watch in the French Quarter, Sculpture Park is kind of cool. We went on a cemetery tour, but I didn't enjoy it at all to be honest.

We also went to a plantation, which was kind of surreal. Also a very pretty drive on the bayou. I recommend the Whitney Plantation or Oak Alley Plantation (they actually have a restaurant there that is quite good -- make sure you get the buttermilk pie. They are both near each other.

I really hope to be back in Portland by then, but life doesn't always go as planned. If I'm still here, I'll be your Florida Man.

Also, I may give this area quite a bit of shit (mainly because I want to be back in Portland), but there really are some neat things to see here. As a life long Oregonian, I have to admit to being really impressed with the beauty in some of wild areas here.

French Quarter today then had dinner at Emeril's, who it turns out my brother in law knows cause they live about 30 miles apart and hang in the same wine and charity auction circles. Great dinner and exceptional service. Tomorrow starts with Care du Monday then the WWII Museum. Then some shopping and poking around maybe cemeteries. Dinner at court of 2 sisters and show at Preservation Hall. BTW the naval aviation museum was cool in Pensacola yesterday. Exceptional politeness abounds everywhere in the south whether in businesses or people on the street. The highway infrastructure is phenomally good. Both remind me of Oregon circa 1970. I have seen maybe 2 portholes so far. The rest areas are crazy clean and fancy. And enormous. Taking lots of pictures but no cord to download to kindle to post so will do later.

I really wanted to go to the WWII museum. We just ran out of time

:dunno:Hey, which icon do I use to post photos straight from my phone to this board?

Right next to the "post reply" button is the "upload a file" button. You should be able to do it from there. I'm going to try one to make sure it works (it has given me problems before).

Edit. I guess that worked, but it isn't just the photo directly in the post. Anyways, that's a dead puffer fish I found on the beach behind my house. I named her Sandy.

Flew into PDX today. Had a fat guy spilling over into my seat for 5 hrs. Got the TSA grope at security in Ft Walton Beach. Houston airport is a filthy pit.

In my whole time in the south I was equally impressed with the awesome friendliness and sincere helpfulness of everyone I came in contact with. That, and the best highway infrastructure I've driven on as an adult reminded me of how Oregon was in the 1960's.

Had not realized how far my home state has fallen incrementally under 3-4 decades of Democratic Party rule. Reminds me of when I moved from Oregon at it's prime to LA in 1977.

Best comparison was Walmart. The one in Bend has the rudest, dumbest, laziest, most self-entitled checkers I have ever dealt with. The Walmart in Defuniak Springs, FL might have the friendliest, most helpful and genuinely caring professionals I have ever met. I wanted to take them out to dinner or something they had that positive of an effect on my day.

As a former Federal employee from back when government's mission was to help and serve Americans, I was alarmed that only 4 people disappointed me with their impressions of Bend Walmart employees. The lady at the post office, a State employee at Wakulla Springs Park, and of course the TSA thugs.

@MARIS61 for Oregon Governor, Make Oregon Great Again!

Wakulla Springs park was fun. Took a boat tour and saw turtles, gators and a variety of cool birds. Will post pics when I get home. Got sunburned at Grayton Beach. Dined every other night at great restaurants, alternating with gourmet dinners cooked by my brother-in-law and his wife...SO MUCH DELICIOUS FOOD!!!!

Glad I didn't make the "Bend Walmart" list. Doesn't sound like a great list to be on.

Sorry. After comparing
If you win the election I want to be ambassador to Sauvie Island.

Sorry. After enjoying Florida's beaches without stepping in poo and not being harassed by someone else's wet lab running over me my first executive order will be NO DOGS ALLOWED ON PUBLIC BEACHES!

Wow, what beaches do you hang out at in Oregon? I've spent a significant amount of time walking my dog at the coast and have very, very rarely experienced what you refer to. Unless it's Cannon Beach. But then, folks there tend to have their heads up their asses a great deal more than most places.....and why I try to avoid that particular area. But in general, I've never found my dog or pretty much anyone else's dog to be a problem. As far as the dog poop goes, I tend to be a serious son of a bitch when I see people refusing to clean up after their dog and I'm not very good about letting it go, even if I have to clean it up myself. Common courtesy coupled with 35 years in the water quality profession.....
Sorry Maris, but it sounds like dog catcher might be a more effective office to run for..... :smiley-beerchug:

I can relate to that! I left Oregon in 75. It took year or so upon return to realize the astounding change to this state that had taken place while I was not watching.

Hey the pics of the Gulf were a treat for me. It always is a good reminder how calm the oceans are compared to this North Pacific. Geez, it is more calm on the gulf there than the dang Columbia River I just came up. If all goes well, we will be heading to that side of the continent this coming fall.

I think I will start looking for a crewman.
