Since 1997 the PER of starting Blazer PG's is 14.7

The epitome of mediocrity.

Damon
McInnis
Telfair
Blake
Miller
Felton

We bring in a PG this season who has a career PER of 14.5. It's just more of the same. We are half-way through decade #2 with a subpar PG.

That's why it's frustrating to see the Blazer not seem to make a pitch at CP3. The Blazers could take a ton of $ off the books for the Hornets and give them talent in return.

CP3 + Okafor + Ariza for Batum + Camby + Wallace + Felton

The Blazers get a franchise PG, solid center and serviceable SF. The Hornets get young talent in Batum plus they shed their 3 highest contracts for cap flexibility and to make the team attractive to buyers.

just peachy, lets go after a highly paid PG with serious knee concerns, just what we need eh? He'll fit right in

CP3 refuses to sign an extension with Boston, but he would with Portland? So you must be really high (no pun intended) on the Blazer's future right now if you think Chris Paul would be enamoured with us.

New York or LA are my bets for this Prima Donna. Yes i said it. I don'tlike the guy. I find him fake. (But very talented)

Plus that trade proposal is a little one sided for us. I doubt NO would be too excited either.

CP3's knee problems aside, he's made his intentions quite clear that he wants to play with his buddies in New York or go someplace like LA ... trading for him and having him walk for nothing wouldn't exactly do much for us.

If the Blazers want an elite point guard, they'll have to go where almost all small market teams without a lot of cache' go -- the draft.

IMO, you don't need an elite PG if you have other all-star caliber pieces PF-C , SG-SF

You simply need a reliable PG that can take care of the ball, distribute, and knock down the 3 when open.

So Steve Blake?

what's the PER of the last 20 years of NBA champions PG? I'd imagine its not much better.

Because of the triangle you'd probably have to substitute Kobe and Jordan/Pippen (or the "system") for the Lakers and Bulls championships. Which leaves guys like Rondo, Kidd, Parker, Magic, etc. -- not exactly chopped liver.

since 97:

Steve Kerr
Avery Johnson
Derek Fisher
Tony Parker
Chauncey Billups
Gary Payton/Jason Williams?
Rondo
Jason Kidd (over the hill Kidd)

yes, basically chopped liver.

Some of them, but if you want to be honest and add Pippen and Kobe to the list as "facilitators" then you'd have to concede that most NBA champions in the last twenty years have had good to great shot creators. You can definitely win with so-so guys or role-players, but it's the exception not the rule.

Paul Allen has the money but severely lacks common sense.

Until we get an above average PG we're going to be that 50-win team that's bounced out every single year in the first round.

The Hornets don't want anyone to take salary off their books, they have to spend 85% of the salary cap to be at the new minimum and already will have to blow some on crappy free agents they don't want to pay in the next few years.

I remember being so excited when we added Damon, I'd say he was as highly regarded roughly as about Rondo is today, no he isn't at a current day Chris Paul level but probably considered better then Eric Gordon or Steph Curry right now.

That sure didn't work out to well...

They can replace they guys with long contracts with ones that roll of the books this coming season though. They would love to get out from under Okafor and Ariza I bet.

I was stoked for that trade. Then I remember going to watch those first games with him on Blazer Cable and being totally underwhelmed.

Then if you want to be honest, you have to include a healthy Brandon Roy on the Blazers' list.

Do people really think PG is more important than any other position?

How many donut hole teams have won with a below average player in the middle? Outside of the Jordan Bulls I can't think of any.

Dirk, Duncan, Garnett, Gasol, Rasheed won titles recentely having great play from the PF spot, that group is freaking elite.

The main component of NBA champions is they have MVP talent IMO, what positions the talent is at is secondary to getting the talent. Yeah if we got an all-star PG of course we could go deeper in the playoffs, but if we got an all-star at any position we would go deeper in the playoffs....

I disagree. What are they going to do after this season, make a run at Deron Williams? Dwight Howard? They know if they give up CP3, cap space isn't going to get them more then mediocre free agents for the forseeable future. Cap space has minimal value for New Orleans for 3 or 4 years. I think they'd want to suck for awhile and add draft picks, then if they get a few draft picks to blossom into quality competent starters they can use cap space 4 or 5 years from now to add the final couple pieces to an up and coming young core group.

The last above-average PG this team had:

Damon could shoot. Too bad he couldn't think. Or keep opposing guards from shooting over him like he wasn't even there. Or see the game beyond his next shot or pass. I honestly don't see Rondo fitting what Nate wants from a PG anyway.

14.7 seems to be what Nate wants at that position.

He's certainly had other options on the bench.

Pretty sure the thread was about PG and how Portland's have been below average, causing our lack of success. You brought up pippen and Kobe.

El Presidente made the point about not needing a good/great point guard to win a championship, then you chimed in about Roy in regards to our slight deviation away from the OP's original point ... which had absolutely nothing to do with what we were talking about.

Why are we trashing Felton before he gets here? He was playing great with Amare. He will play great with LaMarcus and Greg and Gerald. This should be a career year for him. The position is his and he has some good targets to throw the ball to. I swear, Felton is the most hated Blazer who has never even played a game for the Blazers.

I actually agree with you for once. In Charlotte the talent around him was poo-poo. In NYK he flourished next to Amare. When he went to Denver he was surrounded by perimeter players.

Except for this one guy - Wallace, I believe his name was - who became an all-star in Felton's last year there. Those two worked really well together. Man, if only we could get that guy in here too, then we might have something interesting going...
